Helping Students Find Their Writing Voices
One of the most frustrating things for writing teachers is reading papers that simply lack style. When all of the research has been completed and all of the sentences are structured well, but the paper still lacks some pizzazz(活力),it can be boring to grade. If you are searching for ways to help your students find their voices, why not try making students themselves the topic of the writing? 1.
Who are you?
One of the most difficult questions for students to answer is: “Who are you?” _ 2.__ In doing this, through writing, students will start to see their personalities differently and, hopefully, be able to add a feature to their writing.
Dear John
3. Encourage them to write to a famous person they’ve always admired, and then the one they absolutely hate. Explore how their language changes between the two letters. When students know their audiences, it is much easier for them to add the kind of personality their audience wants to see.
4. When students write about what matters most to them, they will often give you the best writing you’ve ever seen. You’ll get those when you ask questions that hit home. When students have something to say about a given topic, it can be easier for them to get their ideas down and then work on their writing style.
Get the words on paper, and then edit them
The most valuable lesson students can learn is to write first, and edit later. Have students write for five minutes about their topics. If they can get their ideas down on paper, that’s 90% of the battle. 5. This can help them realize that, once they have the ideas down, the rest is just fine tuning(微調(diào)). Once they have this skill mastered, it’s easy for them to start adding their own personal voices to their papers.
A. What matters to you?
B. What style is taught in class?
C. When they write about themselves, students’ voices often shine through.
D. Writing letters is a great way for students to explore their writing style.
E. Have your students explore who they are and what makes them unique.
F. Voice is that magical quality which is able to make a creative writing idea sing!
G. After that, have them edit these ideas into a really strong introductory paragraph.

2.E

Eating 40 percent less food could extend a person`s life by 20 years, according to scientists.
Researchers at the Institute of Health Ageing at University College London are developing a treatment that they hope will fight the `disease` of getting older.
They are looking into how genetics(遺傳學(xué)) and lifestyle can affect ageing and add years, possibly decades, to a person`s life.
Age-related diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and neuro degeneration can also be treated, it is claimed.
They want to find out how the life of a rat can be increased by up to 30 percent simply by reducing its food intake.
Researcher Dr. Piper told the Independent : `If you reduce the diet of a rat by 40 percent it will live for 20 or 30 percent longer. So we would be talking 20 years of human life. This has shown on all sorts of animals, even Labradors(a kind of dog).`The scientists are also studying fruit flies, which share 60 percent of human genes and age in a similar manner, and mice.
They have already made the healthy lifespan(壽命) longer in both flies and mice by using drug treatments and a balanced diet. It is hoped that this combination will also work to extend(延長) human life. Dr. Piper said: `If we discover the genes involved with ageing, we should be able to delay ageing itself. This is what we`ve found.`
He added that the field of research into extending life is only a decade old, so remains `in theory . It is their special approach to treating all age-related diseases caused by the `disease` of ageing itself that sets their research apart.
1.The author writes this text in order to_____.
A. encourage people to eat as little as possible
B. tell people how harmful food is to their health
C. introduce an on-going research on delaying ageing
D. show how similar mice and humans are to each other
2.How can people live longer according to the text?
A. Exercise regularly.
B. Reduce their diet properly.
C. Vary their lifestyles constantly.
D. Change their genes completely.
3.What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph suggest?
A. The research is effort-taking.
B. The result of the research is reliable.
C. The research has been done for a long time.
D. There’s a long way to go to put the theory into practice.

When Danny Wallace, 26, got bored, he put an ad on the worldwide web reading simply: “Join Me. Send a passport photo.” A year and a half later his east London flat is the headquarters for a global internet-based “club” whose members carry out good deeds for strangers every Friday.
It’s not common for people in London to talk to strangers. If you see someone struggling with something, part of the brain goes “I want to help”. But the trained part of the brain says: “They will think you are mad or going to mug them”, so you walk away.
Join Me now has about 3,000 members around the world who do an act of kindness every Friday. For example, I’m usually out on a Friday so I go for one of the standard acts — the unexpected cup of coffee. You might be sitting in a cafe and see an old man in the corner drinking coffee or tea, and you walk up with another cup of whatever they are drinking , and say: “ I’ve bought you a coffee” and walk away. It’s a pleasure to see the look of surprise on their faces. There can be some suspicion, but I think that was mostly in the early days when I didn’t know how to do it properly. I would walk up quite nervously like I was doing something wrong and I didn’t know when to leave. In the end, I learned through trial and error. Sometimes it worked, other times it didn’t. I discovered that you have to walk up with confidence and humour and not “get in their faces”. You say: “This is for you”, then you go. It’s hit-and-run kindness. And there is no point in doing it half-heartedly. You’ve got to do it because you really mean it.
Join Me is without geographical boundaries, but there are quite a few members in London, and such stories about things happen on the underground or on the buses. One lady got on the bus and put a ?10 note down and said: “That’s for me and the next nine people”. So at every stop, anyone who got on was told it was paid for. A lot of people were doing this sort of thing anyway. For them it’s an excuse or reason to do something nice for a complete stranger, and it gives them the confidence to walk up and start chatting.
1.When Londoners see someone in trouble, they _______.
A. often give a hand
C. pretend not to have seen it
B. stop and ask questions
D. telephone the police
2.According to the passage, members of Join Me often _______.
A. put an advertisement on the worldwide web
B. go out and make friends with strangers
C. do an act of kindness every Friday
D. buy coffees for the strangers
3.The underlined expression in the third paragraph possibly means _______ .
A. finding something very difficult
B. doing something without much effort
C. making a few mistakes
D. experimenting to get the right result
4.Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. Hit-and-run Kindness B. History of Join Me
C. Danny Wallace and Join Me D. Why not Join Me

Looking back on my childhood,I am convinced that naturalists are born and not made.Although we were all brought up in the same way,my brothers and sisters soon abandoned their pressed flowers and insects.Unlike them,I had no ear for music and languages.I was not an early reader and I could not do mental arithmetic.
Before World War Ⅰ we spent our summer holidays in Hungary.I have only the dim memory of the house we lived in,of my room and my toys.Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a clear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the local birds, and above all,the insects.
I am a naturalist, not a scientist.I have a strong love of the natural world and my enthusiasm led me into varied investigations.I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil while reading about other people’s observations and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations together in my conscious mind.
Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle, because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, which some might honor with the title of scientific research.
But curiosity,a keen eye,a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist:one of the outstanding and essential qualities required is self-discipline,a quality I lack.A scientist requires not only self-discipline,but hard training, determination and a goal.A scientist,up to a certain point, can be made.A naturalist is born.If you can combine the two,you get the best of both worlds.
1.The first paragraph tells us the author .
A.was interested in flowers and insects in his childhood
B.lost his hearing when he was a child
C.didn’t like his brothers and sisters
D.was born to a naturalist’s family
2.The author can’t remember his relatives clearly because .
A.he didn’t live very long with them
B.the family was extremely large
C.he was too young when he lived with them
D.he was fully occupied with observing nature
3.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?( )
A.The author is a naturalist,but not a scientist.
B.The author is a scientist as well as a naturalist.
C.The author is first of all a scientist.
D.The author is neither a naturalist nor a scientist.
4.The author says that he is a naturalist rather than a scientist probably because he thinks he .
A.has a great deal of trouble doing mental arithmetic
B.lacks some of the qualities required of a scientist
C.just reads about other people’s observations and discoveries
D.comes up with solutions in a most natural way
