1pulling out

2was fed up with

3to turn to

4being addicted to

5are arguing with

6backed out

7is running out

8At the risk of

9all at once

固定詞組:be fed up with“……感到厭煩。結(jié)合下文bought可知,此處是一般過去時態(tài)。故填was fed up with。

故填to turn to。

固定詞組:be addicted to沉溺于;admit doing sth.“承認做某事。故填being addicted to

再根據(jù)At the moment可知句子用現(xiàn)在進行時態(tài),且句子主語是children,復(fù)數(shù)形式。故填are arguing with。

故填backed out。

再根據(jù)Try to find an oil station as near as possible.可知油快用完了,所以句子用現(xiàn)在進行時態(tài),且句子主語是oil,是不可數(shù)名詞,謂語動詞用單數(shù)第三人稱。故填is running out。

固定詞組:at the risk of“冒著……的危險符合。故填At the risk of。

固定詞組:all at once“突然符合。故填all at once

【題目】 Some caterpillars’ warning signals (信號) may have evolved (進化) from walking. A team, writing in the journal Nature Communications, reported that the hair-like structures the living things use to make sounds evolved from legs.

The team studied caterpillars which use these structures to communicate their ownership of leaves. This means the caterpillars are able to “tell” strangers to go away without risking injury in fighting. “These are really interesting caterpillars,” said Dr. Jayne Yack from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, who led the research. “They make signals using hair-like structures which are on their back ends.”

The caterpillars drag these structures across the leaf to make scraping (刺耳的) sounds when strangers enter the area of their leaves. “When they make this signal, the strangers leave,” explained Dr. Yack. “It’s like saying ‘I’m here, get out of here — I already own this leaf’.”

The scientists looked at other species (物種) within the same group of caterpillars and created their “family tree”. They used chemical markers (標記物) to work out the relationship between the animals, showing which in the group were the more ancient species and which species evolved more recently. “Those more ancient species actually don’t have these sound-producing structures. They have legs that they use to walk towards strangers,” said Dr. Yack. These more ancient species, she explained, walk towards strangers and try to fight against them. “They can kill each other in the fighting,” Dr. Yack added. She said that the evolution of the scraping show had allowed the caterpillars to solve their fighting without injury. “So our idea is that these signals actually avoid harm to both sides — they solve fighting in a more ‘friendly’ way.”

The study also provides a map of an evolutionary process that many other biologists are researching.

1What can we learn about caterpillars’ warning structures from the text?

A.They have the same use as hair.

B.They are found in caterpillars’ heads.

C.They are used to fight against strangers.

D.They may have evolved from caterpillars’ legs.

2According to the text, Dr. Yack’s team did NOT ________.

A.draw a family tree of caterpillars

B.create a map to show how caterpillars evolve

C.study species within the same group of caterpillars

D.make clear the relationship between different species of caterpillars

3What does the underlined word “They” in the fifth paragraph refer to?

A.The ancient species.B.The chemical markers.

C.The sound-producing structures.D.The more recently evolved species.

4What is the main idea of the text?

A.How caterpillars evolved.

B.How caterpillars warn strangers.

C.Communication between caterpillars.

D.Caterpillars’ warning signals evolved from walking.

Graham Moore is the best-selling author of The Sherlockian and the screenwriter of The Imitation Game. His new book The Last Days of Night is out now. He is talking about some of his favorite books.

Murder in Three Acts

BY AGATHA CHRISTIE

My mother is a crime fiction(偵探小說)lover and, when I was having trouble learning to read, we’d sit in my bed at home in Chicago and take it in turns to read a paragraph. It was the first book I read cover-to-cover and I later became a writer because of that experience. Not only did it give me a love of crime fiction but, more importantly, it taught me that reading can be a shared experience.

Cryptonomicon

BY NEAL STEPHENSON

This book showed me that historical fiction need not be dry, but can be lively and enjoyable. Stephenson asks readers to take science seriously, but writes the story in a funny way. I’d long known of Alan Turing, but Stephenson’s technique (手法)of describing him was surprising; I saw how a writer can bring a real person to life for modern readers.

A Visit from the Goon Squad

BY JENNIFER EGAN

Egan uses a technique that I drew on when writing The Imitation Game. She tells stories from different voices and times, and uses many styles that say to readers, “I’ve done a lot of work, but now you have to join in and work it out for yourselves.”

With my latest book, my greatest hope is that readers will want to get other people discussing the book. I’ve just started the conversation.

1What influenced Moore to be a writer?

A.Reading crime fiction in secret.B.Having trouble learning to read.

C.Reading a book with his mother.D.Writing stories at a young age.

2What does Moore think of Cryptonomicon?

A.Boring.B.Serious.

C.Imaginative.D.Humeorous.

3What does Egan hope readers will do?

A.Write her some letters.B.Think for themselves.

C.Tell their own stories.D.Ask her some questions.

Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX), also known as Beijing New Airport, is the biggest airport in the world. It is also the second international airport of Beijing along with Beijing Capital International airport. The airport's design is pioneering while its location on Daxing District (the southern suburbs of Beijing) is perfect in order to serve the Chinese capital and the neighboring areas of Hebei and Tianjin. The new mega-airport hub (大型樞紐機場) is expected to handle up to 45 million passengers per year by 2021 and reach an outstanding 100 million in the future.

How big is Daxing Airport?

The gigantic Daxing Airport, with the impressive shape which has given it the nickname 'Starfish', has enormous dimensions. The 4 runways' size is impressive while the airport stands are suitable both for one twin-aisle (雙通道) and two single-aisle planes. Eventually, the airport will have 7 runways in total and will be able to serve about 620,000 flights every year.

Who designed Daxing Airport?

Daxing Airport's terminal building is the impressive outcome of the cooperation between ADP Ingeniérie (ADPI) and the architecture team of Zaha Hadid (ZHA) who tragically passed away in 2016. As a result, in August 2018, Hong Kong design studio Lead 8 undertook the design of the new commercial terminal which is expected to meet every passenger's needs.

How much did Daxing Airport cost?

The construction of the mega-airport, which is expected to eventually become the busiest airport in the world, cost an unsurprisingly large amount. The Chinese government is estimated to have paid about US $17.47 billion for this great project.
