An old friend from California called from the airport to tell me that he had arrived. I was not able to leave the office, but I had made plans for his arrival. After explaining where my new house was, I told him that I had left the key under the doormat (門墊). Since I knew it would be pretty late before I could get home, I suggested that he make himself at home and help himself to anything that was in the refrigerator.
Two hours later my friend phoned me from the house. At the moment, he said, he was listening to some of my records after having had a delicious meal. Now, he said, he was drinking a glass of orange juice. When I asked him if he had had any difficulty finding the house, he answered that the only problem was that he had not been able to find the key under the doormat, but luckily, the living room window by the apple tree had been left open and he had climbed in through the window. Dear Lisa,
There is nothing wrong with you and this boy be friends and studying together. Of course a boy and a girl can be good friend. Ending your friendship with this boy would be stupid thing to do. You would lose a good friend and someone to study for.
Teenagers are like to gossip, and they often see something which isn't real. Perhaps your classmates can understand your friendship with the boy. However, there has no reason to stop it. My advice is to ignore your classmates. That way you will show us that you are much grown-up than they are.
Yours,
Miss Wang

My 18-month-old son, Adam, called from the front door.“Look, Mama! Doggie!” I dropped what I was doing and stuck my head out the door.Brandy, our next-door neighbor’s 11-year-old dog, was over again.“Go away!” I shouted.
Brandy’s owner had died about a month earlier. The woman’s family had emptied the house and stuck a “For Sale” sign in the front yard, but the family had left old Brandy behind. For weeks, she’d been wandering around the neighborhood.
It wasn’t that I disliked dogs or anything like that.I just didn’t think about them very much.I never had a dog growing up and had never thought to get one.
Brandy went away and I stayed outside with Adam. Then the phone rang.I went inside to take the call. When I came back, Adam was gone.I searched the yard, front and back, then the basketball court and public pool.No trace of him.I was so nervous that I ran home and called the police, then my husband.
Police searched the neighborhood.Suddenly I heard another sound: a dog barking.“It’s coming from the woods,” one of my neighbors said.We followed the barking to a wooded cliff(懸崖).There we found my son, and he was just inches away from the edges of the cliff, fast asleep.Brandy was beside him, leaning(倚靠)against him to keep him away from the edge. When I picked Adam up, Brandy sank down on her side, breathing quickly. She must have been holding Adam there for hours!
I thanked the police and brought Adam and Brandy back to our house. She hesitated a moment on our doorstep, no doubt remembering the time I’d driven her away.
“Come on, girl,” I said.“This is your home now.” Brandy stepped in, and once she saw she was really welcome, she relaxed and lay down on the floor just inside the door. She’d done a great thing, and I wondered if she knew it .She’d certainly touched me in a way that no animal ever had. What a pity a dog like Brandy had been left behind!

The Power of Appreciation
Lilly was a French Canadian girl who grew up in the farming community. When she was 16, she had to drop school. With English as her second language and poor education, the future didn’t look bright for Lilly.
Lilly’s father told Lilly to find a job. One day, Lilly saw a sign at a big company. Cautiously, she knocked on her very first door. In her broken English, Lilly told the office manager she was interested in the secretarial position. The manage decided to give her a chance. He directed her to type a single letter, and then left. It was 11: 40 a. m. Lilly thought everyone would be leaving for lunch, when she could slip away in the crowd. But she knew she should attempt the letter.
On her first try, Lilly got through one line of five words and made four mistakes. On her second attempt, she completed a full paragraph, but still made many mistakes. She looked at the clock:11:55——five minutes to freedom. Just then, the manager walked in. He came directly over to Lilly, read the letter and said, “Lilly, you’re doing excellent work!”
With those simple words of encouragement, her desire to escape disappeared and her confidence began to grow. Lilly thought, “Well, if he think it’s good, then it must be good. I think I’ll stay!” Lilly did stay——all because someone had given a shy and uncertain girl the gift of self-confidence when she knocked on the door.

You may have noticed something different when you ate at your favorite restaurant. Or perhaps you picked up on it while looking through your social media apps (社交媒體軟件) . You guessed it ---we’re becoming a foodie (吃貨) culture.
For some, that means photographing every dish, but others are taking it one step further. Sophia Hampton, a senior at Staples High School in US, chooses to make her own food. She has been published in Future Chefs, a cookbook of recipes (食譜) by teens.
Hampton’s best advice for those who want to be foodies is to get in the kitchen.
“Start cooking,” she said. “There are so many resources online, like recipes and articles about food. Go to your local farmers’ market and start cooking with them.
Besides blogs and online resources, there are also hands-on cooking classes for students. The Chopping Block, a Chicago cooking school, offers many different classes for teens, including courses on chocolate and French food.
By attending cooking classes, surfing online and going to restaurants, you can find endless recipes. But sometimes becoming a real foodie means being behind a camera. As our food-loving culture becomes more popular and teen-friendly, social media apps like Facebook, have become major players in food culture.
“Getting involved in foodie culture is as easy as having a camera and a social media app,” one foodie said. “I always go to streets and farmers’ markets to take beautiful pictures of food. Wherever food prices are expensive, the photos are free.”
1.What does Hampton advise those who want to be foodies to do?
A. Post their recipes online.
B. Cook food by themselves.
C. Eat at their favorite restaurant.
D. Take photos of every dish they eat.
2.Where can students find new recipes, according to the article?
① cooking classes ② online resources
③ new restaurant ④ public libraries
A.①②③ B.①③④
C.②③④ D.①②④
3.What has made foodie culture more popular, according to the article?
A. People’s growing interest in traditional culture.
B. The convenience of getting different food.
C. The use of cameras and social media.
D. The drop in food prices.
