5.The rise of the Internet has been one of the most transformative developments in human history,comparable in impact to the invention of the printing press and the telegraph.Over two billion people worldwide now have access to vastly more information than ever before,and can communicate with each other instantly,often using Web-connected mobile devices they carry everywhere.But the Internet's tremendous impacts has only just begun.
"Mass adoption of the Internet is driving one of the most exciting social,cultural,and political transformations in history,and unlike earlier periods of change,this time the effects are fully global,"Schmidt and Cohen write in their new book.The New Digital Age.
Perhaps the most profound changes will come when the five billion people worldwide who currently lack Internet access get online.The authors do an excellent job of examining the implications of the Internet revolution for individuals,governments,and institutions like the news media.But if the book has one major shortcoming,it's that authors don't spend enough time applying a critical eye to the role of Internet businesses in these weeping changes.
In their book,the authors provide the most authoritative volume to date that describes-and more importantly predicts-how the Internet will shape our lives in the coming decades.They paint a picture of a world in which individuals,companies,institutions,and governments must deal with two realities,one physical,and one virtual.
At the core of the book is the idea that"technology is neutral,but people aren't."By using this concept as a starting point,the authors aim to move beyond the now familiar optimist vs.pessimist dichotomy(對立觀點(diǎn))that has characterized many recent debates about whether the rise of the Internet will ultimately be good or bad for society.In an interview with TIME earlier this week,Cohen said although he and his co-author are optimistic about many aspects of the Internet,they're also realistic about the risks and dangers that lie ahead when the next five billion people come online,particularly with respect to personal privacy and state surveillance(監(jiān)視).

59.In what way is the rise of the Internet similar to the invention of the printing press and the telegraph?
B
A.It transforms human history.
B.It facilitates daily communication.
C.It is adopted by all humanity.
D.It revolutionizes people's thinking.
60.In what respect is the book The New Digital Age considered inadequate?C
A.It fails to recognize the impact of the Internet technology.
B.It fails to look into the social implications of the Internet.
C.It lacks an objective evaluation of the role of Internet businesses.
D.It does not address the technical aspects of Internet communication.
61.What does the passage say about the authors of The New Digital Age?D
A.They leave many questions unanswered concerning the Internet.
B.They are optimistic about the future of the Internet revolution.
C.They have explored the unknown territories of the virtual world.
D.They don't take sides in analyzing the effects of the Internet.

Over two billion people worldwide now have access to vastly more information than ever before,and can communicate with each other instantly,often using Web-connected mobile devicesthey carry everywhere.
根據(jù)But if the book has one major shortcoming,it's that authors don't spend enough time applying a critical eye to the role of Internet businesses in these sweeping changes.可知書的不足之處是作者沒有時(shí)間以一種批判的眼光來看待電子商務(wù)所扮演的角色.故選C
61.D.推理判斷題.根據(jù)In an interview with Time earlier this week,Cohen said that although he and his co-author are certainly optimistic about many aspects of the Internet, they're also realistic about the risks and dangers that lie ahead when the next five billion people come online, particularly with respect to personal privacy and state surveillance(監(jiān)視).

16.About a century ago,the average life-span (壽命) for Americans was about 50 years.Today,the typical American lives for around seventy-eight years.
According to a German aging study,the maximum life span in industrialized countries has increased by two years every decade since the mid 19th century.What accounts for such increased longevity?Between 1900 and 1950,inventions such as refrigeration(制冷技術(shù))and sewage treatment(污水處理) meant  that  young  people  were  able  to  survive  longer.Moreover,medical breakthroughs helped contain diseases such as polio(小兒麻痹癥),which killed many children.These advances helped increase the average life span.
Medical discoveries after World War II tended to benefit older people.Treatments for heart disease,for example,have allowed the elderly to live longer on average.So does this mean that future medical breakthroughs will result in even longer average life spans,or have we reached our limit?Scientists disagree.
Some argue that if science is one day able to remove disease and old-age infirmity,there will be virtually no limit on how long humans can live.Some even predict that by the year 2150,the average life span will have increased to around 120 years.
Other life-expectancy researchers find that scenario(假設(shè)) highly unlikely.Our bodies'cells can keep reproducing for only so long before they peter out(分裂).Only when science finds a way to keep our cells dividing longer will we see another significant leap in life expectancy.
Still,with plenty of exercise and a healthy diet,those who hold the view can always hope that they'll live long enough to break the record held by Jeanne Louise Calment of France,who lived to be 122.

C years longer at present.

B.medical breakthroughs
C.keeping the cells dividing longer

A.supportive
B.objective
C.optimistic

13.Cigarette ends are everywhere-littering our streets and beaches-and for decades they've been thought of as"unrecyclable".But a New Jersey based company,called TerraCycle,has taken on the challenge,and has come up with a way to recycle millions of cigarette ends and turn them into industrial plastic products.Its aim is to recycle things that people normally consider impossible to reuse.
Obviously it would be even better for the environment if everyone just stopped smoking,but the statistics show that although there has been an increase in anti-smoking ads and messaging,between 2000 and 2014,global sales of cigarettes increased by 8 percent,and a whole lot of those cigarette ends are ending up as trash.Since most of our litter eventually ends up in waterways,cigarette ends can surely pollute the surrounding environment."It only takes a single cigarette end to pollute a liter of water,"TerraCycle founder,Tom Szaky,said."Animals can also mistake littered cigarette ends for food."
So how do you go about turning all those poisonous ends into something useful?TerraCycle does this by first breaking them down into separate parts.They mix the remaining materials,such as the tobacco and the paper,with other kinds of rubbish,and use it on non-agricultural land,such as golf courses.The filters (過濾嘴) are a little harder.To recycle these,TerraCycle first makes them clean and cuts them into small pieces,and then combines them with other recycled materials,making them into liquid for industrial plastic products.
They're now also expanding their recycling offerings to the rest of the 80 percent of household waste that currently can't be recycled,such as chocolate packaging,pens,and mobile phones.The goal is to use the latest research to find a way to stop so much waste ending up in landfill (垃圾填埋),and then get companies to provide money for the process.And so far,it's working.

21.What does TerraCycle intend to do?D
A.Search for recyclable materials for use.
B.Deal with as many cigarette ends as possible.
C.Produce new kinds of industrial plastic products.
D.Recycle what used to be considered unrecyclable.
22.The underlined word"trash"in Paragraph 2 probably meansA.
A.rubbish
B.poison
C.disaster
D.ruin
23.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?B
A.The effective use of cigarette ends.
B.The process of recycling cigarette ends.
C.The difficulty in recycling cigarette ends.
D.The reason for breaking down cigarette ends.

Communicating with a deaf person doesn't have to be as difficult as it might seem.The trick is to be patient,straightforward,and to remember that deaf people communicate visually.After you know it,you'll forget you were ever worried!

Our school gets wired
"By next term our school will have Wifi all over,"the teacher announced. We cheered with joy and applause.
Last semester my school embraced (引入) the Internet. We hand in our compositions online so that we can share our ideas and learn from each other.Presenting work over the Net has become quite popular.
However, many parents are worried about students'overusing the Internet on campus. After all, many of us are still deeply immersed (沉浸) in"F5"the Renren.com in class. Some are afraid to miss the latest news; some just want to jump on the bandwagon (潮流).
To make sure students use the Internet properly,we will be given an account to log onto the Internet. Our online activities will also be monitored by the school. These measures will be effective and helpful to those who lack self-control.
Whether we have noticed or not,the Internet plays an important role in our lives. But we students need to be self-disciplined (自律的) so we can make full use of modern technology.
Opponents of WiFi in schools would have you believe that there is nothing lost by banning WiFi in schools and that the alternative to enable internet access in schools is wired internet connections. While this may sound like a reasonable compromise,it is a major step backwards for our education system.
WiFi restrictions reduce and,in some cases, eliminate access for our children to the largest educational resource ever created-the internet. It imposes limits on the types of tools our teachers can use,and negatively impacts the education of our children.

Today, more and more schools provide Wi-Fi coverage for their students, which is popular with some students,as it is beneficial to their study, but some tend to take the"Against"side.
There is no denying middle school campuses should be covered with Wi-Fi,which will promote the development of web-based education. With the aid of Wi-Fi,teachers would be able to create more interesting and vivid classes and increase their interactions with students. In this way, their teaching would become more effective and students'interest in learning would be aroused.Meanwhile,it would also be helpful for students to develop their independence and creativity. In addition,it would be more convenient for students to surf the internet to acquire the necessary knowledge for their own learning.
Of c ourse,to make sure the internet connection had a positive influence on students'studying, the school could work out technical tools to guide them..

Dear Minister,
I hear that many people in your country are suggesting Britain's education system should follow China's after a BBC documentary, which reported a 4-week experiment ending up with Chinese teaching methods defeating British ones..It is said you are collecting opinions from Chinese students.The following is my view.
Personally,I strongly advise you forget Chinese style of education. On one hand,Chinese students wining in test scores is in fact at the cost of their creative abilities and autonomy in learning. As a matter of fact, many of my classmates could do nothing without teachers'and parents'help, let alone make great innovations in their later life.On the other hand,Chinese students are suffering from a severe lack of sleep and good health, all due to the pursuit of a high score in numerous tests.Without a healthy body, nothing is meaningful.Do you really want young Britons to spend 15 to 16 hours a day on study?
Therefore, dear Minister, you should think twice if you decide to follow that suggestion.
Your sincerely,
A Chinese senior student.
