Our school gets wired
"By next term our school will have Wifi all over,"the teacher announced. We cheered with joy and applause.
Last semester my school embraced (引入) the Internet. We hand in our compositions online so that we can share our ideas and learn from each other.Presenting work over the Net has become quite popular.
However, many parents are worried about students'overusing the Internet on campus. After all, many of us are still deeply immersed (沉浸) in"F5"the Renren.com in class. Some are afraid to miss the latest news; some just want to jump on the bandwagon (潮流).
To make sure students use the Internet properly,we will be given an account to log onto the Internet. Our online activities will also be monitored by the school. These measures will be effective and helpful to those who lack self-control.
Whether we have noticed or not,the Internet plays an important role in our lives. But we students need to be self-disciplined (自律的) so we can make full use of modern technology.
Opponents of WiFi in schools would have you believe that there is nothing lost by banning WiFi in schools and that the alternative to enable internet access in schools is wired internet connections. While this may sound like a reasonable compromise,it is a major step backwards for our education system.
WiFi restrictions reduce and,in some cases, eliminate access for our children to the largest educational resource ever created-the internet. It imposes limits on the types of tools our teachers can use,and negatively impacts the education of our children.

Today, more and more schools provide Wi-Fi coverage for their students, which is popular with some students,as it is beneficial to their study, but some tend to take the"Against"side.
There is no denying middle school campuses should be covered with Wi-Fi,which will promote the development of web-based education. With the aid of Wi-Fi,teachers would be able to create more interesting and vivid classes and increase their interactions with students. In this way, their teaching would become more effective and students'interest in learning would be aroused.Meanwhile,it would also be helpful for students to develop their independence and creativity. In addition,it would be more convenient for students to surf the internet to acquire the necessary knowledge for their own learning.

We did the best we could with what we had to work with and called this area our"rock garden".Whenever we had leftover flowers or plants,Denise or I would stick them out front,just to bring some color to the area.We would do all of the yard work on our own,even the tiring weed-pulling.
Last summer I had reached the end of the rock garden and found a tiny little plant that I could not immediately identify,I knew I didn't plant it and Denise claimed that she didn't either.We decided to let it continue growing until we could figure out what it was.
Weeks passed and as I made my way back to the mystery plant,it appeared to be a Sunflower with a tall skinny stalk(莖,桿) and only one head on it.I decided to baby it along and weed around it.As I pulled rocks from the area to get to the weeds,I noticed something unusual.The Sunflower had not started where I saw the stalk begin.It actually had begun under a big rock and grown under and around it to reach the sun.
That's when I realized that if a tiny little Sunflower didn't let a big rock stand in its way of developing,we too have the ability of doing the same thing.Once our environment begins to see that we believe in ourselves like that little Sunflower,we can attain the same nourishment(營(yíng)養(yǎng)) and growth as well.
Stand tall like the Sunflower and be proud of who and what you are and the environment will begin to support you.You will find a way to go under or around your big obstacle in order to reach your desires.

A.the author finished building his home hurriedly

D.the Sunflower grew under and around a big rock

5.The rise of the Internet has been one of the most transformative developments in human history,comparable in impact to the invention of the printing press and the telegraph.Over two billion people worldwide now have access to vastly more information than ever before,and can communicate with each other instantly,often using Web-connected mobile devices they carry everywhere.But the Internet's tremendous impacts has only just begun.
"Mass adoption of the Internet is driving one of the most exciting social,cultural,and political transformations in history,and unlike earlier periods of change,this time the effects are fully global,"Schmidt and Cohen write in their new book.The New Digital Age.
Perhaps the most profound changes will come when the five billion people worldwide who currently lack Internet access get online.The authors do an excellent job of examining the implications of the Internet revolution for individuals,governments,and institutions like the news media.But if the book has one major shortcoming,it's that authors don't spend enough time applying a critical eye to the role of Internet businesses in these weeping changes.
In their book,the authors provide the most authoritative volume to date that describes-and more importantly predicts-how the Internet will shape our lives in the coming decades.They paint a picture of a world in which individuals,companies,institutions,and governments must deal with two realities,one physical,and one virtual.
At the core of the book is the idea that"technology is neutral,but people aren't."By using this concept as a starting point,the authors aim to move beyond the now familiar optimist vs.pessimist dichotomy(對(duì)立觀點(diǎn))that has characterized many recent debates about whether the rise of the Internet will ultimately be good or bad for society.In an interview with TIME earlier this week,Cohen said although he and his co-author are optimistic about many aspects of the Internet,they're also realistic about the risks and dangers that lie ahead when the next five billion people come online,particularly with respect to personal privacy and state surveillance(監(jiān)視).

59.In what way is the rise of the Internet similar to the invention of the printing press and the telegraph?
B
A.It transforms human history.
B.It facilitates daily communication.
C.It is adopted by all humanity.
D.It revolutionizes people's thinking.
60.In what respect is the book The New Digital Age considered inadequate?C
A.It fails to recognize the impact of the Internet technology.
B.It fails to look into the social implications of the Internet.
C.It lacks an objective evaluation of the role of Internet businesses.
D.It does not address the technical aspects of Internet communication.
61.What does the passage say about the authors of The New Digital Age?D
A.They leave many questions unanswered concerning the Internet.
B.They are optimistic about the future of the Internet revolution.
C.They have explored the unknown territories of the virtual world.
D.They don't take sides in analyzing the effects of the Internet.

15.The strong protests against constant testing are a reaction mainly against the mindless test-prep(針對(duì)訓(xùn)練) associated with reading tests.Math tests,which are based on an actual curriculum,aren't the main issue.Prepping for them usually helps improve math proficiency.But prepping for reading tests have had only a short-tem effect,and hasn't helped reading ability in the long run.
If you look at recent scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress,you will see that there's a gentle boost in reading scores for grades 4 and 8,but not for 17 years olds.The reading proficiency of high school seniors had not been changed since the great verbal decline of the 1970s,which was well documented by drops in scores on the SAT.So,why haven't the short-term early boots in grades 4and 8translated into better verbal scores in grade 12?Reading tests in later grades are more knowledge-intensive than the tests in the early grades.Scholars of the subject showed that 12th-grade scores declined in the 1970s and stayed flat,because of a narrowing of the school curriculum.
The time-consuming test preparations with endless exercises on"finding the main idea"and"questioning the author"have become the main cause of today's curriculum narrowing.Emphasis on reading and reading tests have helped to cause low reading scores among senior students.The underlying reasons for this paradox(悖論) are not widely understood among test makers and other specialists:Prepping for reading tests has had a negative effect on the curriculum,because the tests themselves,not to mention the strategy exercises,are based on an incorrect understanding of reading ability.
Reading ability is very topic independent.How well students perform on a reading test is highly dependent on their knowledge of the topics of the test passages.Yet the topics on our current reading tests don't have anything to do with the topics studied in school.Worse,there's no short-term way of preparing for a general reading test other than by doing topic-indifferent skill-exercises.It involves teaching students how to figure out the meaning of a test passage,even when they know little about the topic.This kind of unproductive and boring test-prep ceases to have an effect.
That's why reading scores were higher when schooling was more knowledge-intensive.A knowledge-oriented curriculum will,over time,produce higher verbal abilities than a test-prep curriculum.Over 13years of knowledge-intensive schooling,students,including disadvantages ones,can learn quite a lot about a lot of topics,greatly increasing their ability to make high scores on a reading test.

58.According to Paragraph 1,constant reading tests are receiving strong protests probably becauseC.
A.they are a reaction against the mindless test-prep related to reading tests
B.Math tests which are based on an actual curriculum aren't the main issue
C.prepping for them hasn't boosted high school seniors'reading proficiency
D.prepping for them fails to produce any effect for students'reading skills
59.Emphasis on reading had contributed to low scores in higher grades becauseD.
A.the test-prep associated with reading tests is too time-consuming
B.there's no short-term way of preparing for a general reading test
C.the prepping for reading tests is unproductive and boring
D.test experts fail to understand reading proficiency correctly
60.The suitable title for this text could beD.
A.Strong Protest Against Constant Testing
B.Reading Ability is Very Topic Dependent
C.A Paradox of Emphasis on Reading and Low Scores
D.Why Reading Test Scores Flatten Out in 12th Grade.

18.One hundred years ago,"Colored"was the typical way of referring to Americans of African descent.Twenty years later,it was purposefully dropped to make way for"Negro."By the late 1960s,that term was overtaken by"Black."And then,at a press conference in Chicago in 1988,Jesse Jackson declared that"African American"was the term to welcome.This one was chosen because it echoed the labels of groups,such as"Italian Americans"and"Irish Americans,"that had already been freed of widespread discrimination.
A century's worth of calculated name changes point to the fact that naming any group is a politically freighted exercise.A 2001study cataloged all the ways in which the term"Black"carried connotations (涵義) that were more negative than those of"African American."
But if it was known that"Black"people were viewed differently from"African Americans,"researchers,until now,hadn't identified what that gap in perception was derived from.A recent study,conducted by Emory University's Erika Hall,found that"Black"people are viewed more negatively than"African Americans"because of a perceived difference in socioeconomic status.As a result,"Black"people are thought of as less competent and as having colder personalities.
The study's most striking findings shed light on the racial discriminations permeating the professional world.Even seemingly harmless details on a CV,it appears,can tap into recruiters'(招聘人員)discriminations.A job application might mention affiliations(關(guān)系) with groups such as the"Wisconsin Association of African-American Lawyers"or the"National Black Employees Association,"the names of which apparently have consequences,and are also beyond their members'control.
In one of the study's experiments,subjects were given a brief description of a man from Chicago with the last name Williams.To one group,he was identified as"African-American,"and another was told he was"Black."With little else to go on,they were asked to estimate Mr.Williams'salary,professional standing,and educational background.
The"African-American"group estimated that he earned about 37,000ayearandhadatwo-yearcollegedegree.The"Black"group,ontheotherhand,puthissalaryatabout 29,000,and guessed that he had only"some"college experience.Nearly three-quarters of the first group guessed that Mr.Williams worked at a managerial level,while only 38.5percent of the second group thought so.
Hall's findings suggest there's an argument to be made for electing to use"African American,"though one can't help but get the sense that it's a decision that papers over the urgency of continued progress.Perhaps a new phrase is needed,one that can bring everyone one big step closer to realizing Du Bois'original,idealistic hope:"It's not the name-it's the Thing that counts."
