8.THE year of 2014has been jam-packed with events good,bad,and ugly.But no matter what has happened,smart people have always been busy inventing.
Here are some of the inventions of 2014that have helped to make the world better,smarter,and a little more fun.
‘Super banana'
Australian biogeneticist James Dale visited Uganda,a poor African country,in the early 2000s.There,he found that 15-30percent of children under 5were at risk of going blind because they did not get enough Vitamin A.Dale also learned that people there love bananas.They eat three to 11bananas a day.So he came up with the idea to plant bananas containing added nutrition in order to improve Ugandans'health.
With the help of Bill Gates'foundation,Dale developed the"super banana".He added a gene to the fruit,making it rich in Vitamin A.In June,"super bananas"began human trials in the US.
Coaching basketball
Basketball is popular worldwide,partly because you only need a hoop and a ball to play the game.But this simple game has experienced a technology makeover this year with the development of a smart-sensor basketball.
The ball,called the 94Fifty Basketball,has nine sensors inside.They can tell you anything from how fast you are going to how accurate your shot angles are.
With a Bluetooth chip inside, the basketball can connect to your smartphone and tell you in the voice of a coach to"snap your wrist (傳旋轉球)",or"go faster",depending on the data.
The Hovercraft
Thanks to the California-based company Hendo,flying past your friends on a floating board could soon become a reality.
The Hovercraft has four small engines.These create a special magnetic field which generates (產(chǎn)生) enough force to lift the board off the ground,according to kickstarter.com.
At the moment,the hoverboard can only float an inch off the ground for 15minutes and must fly over a metallic material.It's expensive too,at $10,000 (61,810yuan),but the company hopes that one day the technology could be used to improve the world.
Wireless electricity
Most of us could not bear to live without wireless Internet.We use it every day for everything from our phones to our cars.But one company wants to go a step further,by combining wireless technology with electricity.
That's right,no more tangled (纏繞的) wires and no more having to sit and hold your cell phone near a power socket in the corner of the room.WiTricity,a US company,has invented technology that can power objects up to 2.4meters away.It uses a special plug-in coil (線圈) that creates a magnetic field.

60.Which of the following statements would James Dale agree with?C
A.Vitamin A is largely found in fruits like bananas.
B.Children in Uganda should eat fewer bananas.
C.Scientists could make use of people's eating habits to develop new food products.
D."Super bananas"are definitely a safe biological product.

C.The bluetooth chip inside allows its users to listen to music while playing basketball.
D.The sensors hidden inside can help players run faster in a game.

9.Children pushed in buggies which face away from their parents may suffer longterm emotional(情感的)and language problems,according to a study published on Friday.
The research, believed to be the first of its kind, found that children who were not facing the person pushing them were less likely to talk, laugh and communicate with their parents.
The findings were based on a study of 2,722parents and babies and an experiment where 20babies were wheeled in buggies for a mile,facing their parents for half the journey and facing away for the other half.Parents using facetoface buggies were twice as likely to talk to their children while the babies'heart rates fell and they were twice as likely to fall asleep,showing that they were feeling relaxed and safe.
In addition,only one baby out of the 20studied laughed while sitting in an awayfacing buggy.
"Our data(數(shù)據(jù)) suggests that for many babies today,life in a buggy is emotionally impoverished and possibly stressful.Stressed babies grow into anxious adults,"said Dr Suzanne Zeedyk,Developmental Psychologist at Scotland's Dundee University who carried out the research.
The study,which was published by National Literacy Trust as part of its"Talk To Your Baby"campaign,found that 62percent of all children observed travelled in awayfacing buggies.
Zeedyk said it would have a negative effect on babies'development if they spent a long time in awayfacing buggies, which would be bad to their ability to communicate with their parent at a time when their brain was developing rapidly.
Laura Barbour of the Sutton Trust,a social mobility charity which funded the research, said buggy manufacturers(制造商) should look closely at the findings.

6.Plastic bags are everywhere!Every day,we are handed countless plastic bags:when we go to grocery stores, clothing stores, book stores and restaurants.Yes,sometimes, they are  convenient, but most of the time, they are avoidable.A plastic bag is just not necessary for that apple you are about to eat or that soda you are going to drink right away.Consider these questions:

3.A few months ago as I wandered through my parents'house, the same house I grew up in,I had a sudden, scary realization. When my parents bought the house,in 1982,they were only two years older than I am now.I tried to imagine myself in two years, ready to settle down and buy the house I'd still be living in almost 30 years later.
It seemed ridiculous. On a practical level, there's no way I could afford to buy a house anytime soon.More importantly,I wouldn't want to.I'm not sure where I'll be living in two years,or what kind of job I'll have. And I don't think I'll be ready to settle down and stay in one place.
So this is probably the generation gap that divides my friends and me from our parents. When our parents were our age, they'd got their education, chosen a career, and were starting to settle into responsible adult lives.
My friends and I--"Generation Y"--still aren't sure what we want to do with our lives.Whatever we end up doing,we want to make sure we're happy doing it.We'd rather take risks first, try out different jobs, and move from one city to another until we find our favorite place. We'd rather spend our money on travel than put it in a savings account.
This casual attitude toward responsibility has caused some critics to call my generation"arrogant","impatient",and"overprotected".Some of these complaints have a point. As children,we were encouraged to succeed in school, but also to have fun.We grew up in a world full of technological innovation:cellphones, the Internet, instant messaging, and video games.
Our parents looked to rise vertically(垂直的)--starting at the bottom of the ladder and slowly making their way to the top,on the same track, often for the same company. That doesn't apply to my generation.
Because of that,it may take us longer than our parents to arrive at responsible, stable adulthood. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. In our desire to find satisfaction,we will work harder, strive for ways to keep life interesting, and gain a broader set of experiences and knowledge than our parents'generation did.

8.You're lost in the world of dreams and sleep.You roll over,smiling as you come across a swimming pool filled with chocolate.And then,your wonderful dream becomes a nightmare when someone is screaming,"Get up!"It's just what every teenager goes through each morning!
Now,there seems to be one school that finally understands that requiring teens to show up at 9am is not just cruel but also harmful to both the kids and the school.
The Monkseaton High School in North Tyneside,Britain,recently decided to experiment to see if there is any difference in student behavior if they just pushed back the start of their day by one hour,from 9am to 10am.And the results are surprising.
Since carrying out the later start,Monkseaton has seen a 28% drop in  truancy,even hardly any lateness,and best of all,higher test scores.One of the reasons is that the teenagers are much happier to have the extra hour of sleep,but there is also a scientific reason behind why they need the extra sleep.
The school's decision to push back the time was based on the research done by Oxford Professor Russell Foster, who pointed out that teenagers and adults have different sleep cycles, explaining why teenagers go to bed late and wake up late.
While adults are wide awake and ready at 8am,teenagers are not fully awake until 10am,sometimes even noon.Teachers may argue that their students perform better in the morning,but in fact,it is because they are in the zone while their students are still sleepy,making the students easier to control.Memory tests prove that the more difficult classes should be in the afternoon when teenagers are most wide awake.
The Monkseaton school officials are encouraged by the results and plan on voting to make it a permanent change.
