Winnie-the-Pooh

By A. A. Milne

Winnie-the-Pooh has been introduced and reintroduced to generation after generation as a model of a child’s best friend. However, not everyone has found Pooh is lovely. This classic has been banned in a variety of countries at one point. So why would anyone ever want to keep children from the joy of Milne’s classic? In the case of Russia, Winnie-the-Pooh was banned in 2009 because of alleged Nazi (納粹黨的) ties.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

By Frank Baum

Originally published in the year 1900, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is one of the foundations of the fairytale genre. Who, then, would seek to ban a book that has become so important to the American experience?

America is that who. The Detroit Library banned The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1957 for having no value for children.

Charlotte’s Web

By E. B. White

White’s tale of the relationship between two unexpected creatures, a spider and a pig, has been drawing children in for over half a century. Published in 1952, this classic has been readily available on most library shelves for children to read. However, some people would like to make this book never see the light of day.

In one extreme case, a school in England banned Charlotte’s Web for fear that the pig Wilbur might be offensive (冒犯的) to Muslim students. Fortunately, the Muslim Council of Britain saw the foolishness of this ban, so the book was quickly restored to its right place on the shelves.

Where the Wild Things Are

By Maurice Sendak

Though its first copy was published fifty years ago, this book hasn’t always been readily available in libraries and in stores. After its release, Where the Wild Things Are was banned in libraries all across the U.S. for its dark tone and unruly leading characters. Driving to a friend’s house on a recent evening, I was attracted by the sight of the full moon rising just above my friend’s rooftop. I stopped to watch it for a few moments, thinking about what a pity it is that most city people --- myself included --- usually miss sights like this because we spend most of our lives indoors.

My friend had also seen it. He grew up living in a forest in Europe, and the moon meant a lot to him then. It had touched much of his life.

I know the feeling. Last December I took my seven-year-old daughter to the mountainous jungle of northern India with some friends. We stayed in a forest rest house with no electricity or running hot water. Our group had campfires outside every night, and indoors when it was too cold outside. The moon grew to its fullest during our trip. Between me and the high mountains lay three or four valleys. Not a light shone in them and not a sound could be heard. It was one of the quietest places I have ever known, a bottomless well of silence. And above me was the full moon, which struck me deeply.

Today our lives are filled with glass, metal, plastic and fiber-glass. We have television, cell phones, electricity, heaters and ovens and air-conditioners, cars, computers.

Struggling through traffic that evening at the end of a tiring day, most of it spent indoors, I thought, “Before long, I would like to live in a small cottage. There I will grow vegetables and read books and walk in the mountains. And perhaps write, but not in anger. I may become an old man there, and wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled and measure out my life in coffee spoons. But I will be able to walk outside on a cold silent night and touched the moon.”

1.The best title for the passage would be _________.

A. Break away from Modern life

B. Touched by the Moon

C. A Bottomless well of Silence

D. The Pleasures of Modern Life

2.The writer felt sorry for himself because __________.

A. there was too much pollution.

B. there were too many accidents on the road.

C. he failed to see the fullest moon.

D. he didn’t adapt to modern inventions

3.Modern things are mentioned mainly to ___________.

A. show that the writer likes city life very much.

B. explain that people have less chances to enjoy nature.

C. tell us that people greatly benefit from modern life.

D. show that we can also enjoy nature at home through them.

4.The author wrote the passage to __________.

A. show the love for the moonlight.

B. want to communicate longing for modern life.

C. advise modern people to learn to live.

D. express the feeling of returning to nature.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2016屆北京市高三下學(xué)期開(kāi)學(xué)(零模)檢測(cè)考試英語(yǔ)試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

First, you ought to know that I’m “only” fourteen. My mother points this out often. I can make my own decisions when I’m old enough to vote, she says. Second, I should tell you that she’s right — I’m not always responsible. I sometimes take the prize for grade-A dork(呆子). Take last weekend for instance. I was staying at Dad’s, and I decided it was time I learned to drive. It was Sunday morning, 7 A.M., and I hadn’t slept well. I’d been up thinking about an argument, which I’ll tell you about in a minute. Well, nobody was up yet in the neighborhood, so I thought it couldn’t hurt to back the car out of the garage and drive around the block. But Dad has a clutch(離合器)car. The “R” on the shift handle was up on the left side, right next to first gear(檔位). I guess you can guess the rest.

Dad’s always been understanding. He didn’t say, “Okay, little Miss Know-It-All, you can just spend the rest of the year paying this off,” which is what Mom would have said. Instead, Dad worried about what might have happened to me. And that made me feel more guilty than anything. I think he’d be a better number-one caregiver, but I can’t say things like that to Mom. To her, I have to say, “But Mom, Dad’s place is closer to school. I could ride my bike,” to which she replies, “Amy Lynn, you don’t own a bike. Remember? You left it in the yard, and it was stolen. And you haven’t got the patience to earn the money to replace it.”

1.The writer feels guilty because she ________.

A. made her dad worry

B. ruined the car

C. broke the law

D. didn’t tell her mom about the car incident

2.The main conflict between the writer and her mother is about whether she ________.

A. can make her own decisions

B. should live with her mom or her dad

C. should be allowed to drive

D. should pay for things she loses or breaks

3.The writer’s mother thinks the writer is ________.

A. too attached to her dad

B. too emotional

C. too shy

D. irresponsible

4.In the first sentence, the writer used “only” to suggest that she ________.

A. doesn’t want to grow old

B. thinks fourteen is old enough for some things

C. wishes she were older

D. thinks fourteen is an embarrassing age
