【題目】閱讀理解。

Every man wants his son to be somewhat of a clone, not in features but in footsteps. As he grows you also age, and your ambitions become more unachievable. You begin to realize that your boy, in your footsteps, could probably accomplish what you hoped for. But footsteps can be muddied and they can go off in different directions.

My son Jody has hated school since day one in kindergarten. Science projects waited until the last moment. Book reports werent written until the final threat.

Ive been a newspaperman all my adult life. My daughter is a university graduate working toward her masters degree in English. But Jody? When he entered the tenth grade he became a “vo-tech” student(技校學(xué)生). Theyre called “motorheads” by the rest of the student body.

When a secretary in my office first called him “motorhead”, I was shocked. “Hey, he’s a good kid,” I wanted to say. “And smart, really.”

I learned later that motorheads are, indeed, different. They usually have dirty hands and wear dirty work clothes. And they don’t often make school honor rolls(光榮榜).

But being the parent of a motorhead is itself an experience in education. We who labor in clean shirts in offices don’t have the abilities that motorheads have. I began to learn this when I had my car crashed. The cost to repair it was estimated at $800. “Hey, I can fix it,” said Jody. I doubted it , but let him go ahead, for I had nothing to lose.

My son ,with other motorheads, fixed the car. They got parts(零件)from ajunkyard, and ability from vo-tech classes. The lost was $25 instead of $80.

Since that first repair job, a broken air-conditioner, a non-functioning washer and a non-toasting toaster have been fixed. Neighbors and co-workers trust their car repairs to him.

These kids are happiest when doing repairs. They joke and laugh and are living in their own relaxed world. And their minds are bright despite their dirty hands and clothes.

I have learned a lot from my motorhead: publishers need printers, engineers need mechanics, and architects need builders. Most important, I have learned that fathers don’t need clones in footsteps or anywhere else.

My son may never make the school honor roll. But he made mine.

A. His son had the ability to fix it.

B. it would save him much time.

C. it wouldnt cause him any more loss

【4】In the authors eyes, motorheads are _______.

A. tidy and hardworking B. cheerful and smart

【題目】 On one of her trips to New York several years ago, Eudora Welty decided to take a couple of New York friends out to dinner. They settled in at a comfortable East Slide cafe and within minutes, another customer was approaching their table.

Hey, arent you from Mississippi? the elegant, white-haired writer remembered being asked by the stranger. Im from Mississippi too.

Without a second thought, the woman joined the Welty party. When her dinner partner showed up, she also pulled up a chair.

They began telling me all the news of Mississippi, Welty said. I didnt know what my New York friends were thinking.

Taxis on a rainy New York night are rarer than sunshine. By the time the group got up to leave, it was pouring outside. Weltys new friends immediately sent a waiter to find a cab. Heading back downtown toward her hotel, her big-city friends were amazed at the turn of events that had changed their Big Apple dinner into a Mississippi state reunion(團聚).

My friends said: Now we believe your stories, Welty added. And I said: Now you know. These are the people that make me write them.

Sitting on a sofa in her room, Welty, a slim figure in a simple gray dress, looked pleased with this explanation.

【題目】Music is magic! Music speaks louder than words and it is a “l(fā)anguage” that the whole world can understand. A piece of music can produce a response in the heart and mind. Like feeling an electrical current or receiving a personal radio signal, music has a spiritual effect on a person. Different kinds of music influence people in different ways.

I have listened to music all my life. When I was twelve years old, the Beatles came to America and my whole world opened up. Maybe young people today cannot understand the influence of the Beatles when they exploded across America. Their influence changed the way we dressed, looked, acted and spoke... even our culture. The Beatles arrived in America from the UK just under three months after the assassination(暗殺) of President John Kennedy, which had put America into a great depression. And the freshness and lively spirit of the Beatles was exactly what the country needed to refresh itself.

Music links the heart of the hearer with that of the composer. This means that it mixes the spirit of the composer with your spirit when you listen to it. And the music can take your spirit out of your body and transport you into another world. Music has a great way of touching people. Music can make you laugh, cry or shout. It's also a great source of inspiration.

Try this one day and notice what happens: make yourself a cup of tea, sit on your sofa and play one of your favorite songs. Close your eyes, and soon you'll find yourself creating vivid mental images—matching the music that you are listening to.

【1】Music has magical power because it ________.

A. is a kind of language

B. can be played much louder than words

C. receives a personal radio signal

D. can influence a person's spirit

A. were the biggest band in American history

B. are not accepted by modern American people

C. appeared at a special time in American politics

D. represented the roots of American culture

【3】One will do all of the following while listening to music EXCEPT ________.

A. feeling very refreshed

B. having emotional changes

C. painting some vivid pictures

D. feeling inspired by the composer

【4】It can be inferred from the passage that the author ________.

A. has been influenced by the Beatles

B. enjoys drinking tea in his spare time

C. admires President John Kennedy very much

D. likes to match his own feeling with that of the composer

【題目】閱讀理解。

Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I’m not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don’t come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that’s just the reality of how life is.

However,to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And,in addition to that,in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practicing. To become great at certain things,it’ll require even more time, time that most people won’t put in.

This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don’t enjoy what you do ,it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it.

When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It’s sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there’s a huge chance that you’re wrong anyway.

Whatever you do,if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time.If you’re not willing to put in the time and work, don’t expect to receive any rewards.Consistent, hard work won’t guarantee you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into.

A.work makes one feel pain

B.one tends to enjoy his work

C.one gives up his work easily

D.it takes a lot of time to succeed

【4】What can we infer from Paragraph 4?

A.Successful people like to show their great skills.

B.People sometimes succeed without luck or talent.

C.People need to achieve success at the cost of life.

【5】What is the main theme of the passage?
