1寫作意圖題。由全文的主題句Fire extinguishers are marked according to the kind of fore on which they should be used. Using the wrong type of the extinguishers can be dangerous and make things worse. 可知這篇文章主要介紹了各種類型的滅火器,所以作者寫這篇文章的目的是讓讀者們了解,選A。

2推理判斷題。由Using the wrong type of the extinguishers can be dangerous and make things worse.以及Make sure you have the correct type of fire extinguisher,可推斷出在使用滅火器之前,要檢查一下你是否選擇對了合適的滅火器,選B。

3詞義猜測題。Sweep the sprary from side-to-side at the fire’s base until it goes out.

I didn't have my camera with me at that time, but I rushed back home to get it. Unfortunate, by the time I got back, they had finished the scene and the actor couldn't be seen everywhere. I was really disappointed and about to leave when he walked out a building. He were right there in the front of me! Language and literacy (讀寫能力) are among humans' greatest inventions. Evolving(演變)over the course of human history, languages are a reflection of our cultural and societal attitudes. Today, surrounded(包圍)by social media, television, movies, and, of course, books, the ability to read and write is important to expressing one's feelings. Most humans acquire language in early childhood and speak fluently when they are about three years old, but our continued relationship with language gives shape and meaning to our lives.
Take it slow. Many readers feel that they read too slowly, especially compared with others. The best readers are flexible(靈活的)— slowing down when needed — and always have a dictionary at hand.
Read aloud. When humans first began reading written words, it was unusual to read in silence.Try listening to the author reading their own work — you'll be surprised to find how clearly it comes through on the page.
Write. Writing and reading go hand-in-hand: how and what you read affects how and what you write, and the best readers often make the best writers. But while much can be learned from close, repeated readings, there are many pleasures to language that can only be experienced through the practice of writing.
Tell your friends. All of the literature is essentially communication from an individual's inner voice to an audience. It's a good way to see the world from someone else's eyes and, in the process, carefully examine your own reaction to what you're reading.
A. But the truth is that the faster you read, the less likely you are to understand fully what you're reading.
B. Can you remember the first piece of writing that transported you to another world?
C. There is something magical about sharing books with friends or a book club.
D. Try writing every day for a month, and you will never read the same again.
E. Reading out loud is one of the best ways to improve your reading ability.
F. Here are 4 ways to become a better reader.
G. In no time, you'll be appreciating novels like fine wine.

【題目】Small islands that bear the brunt of rising sea levels also face the greatest risk of diseases linked to a warmer planet, health leaders said on Saturday, as 13 million medical professionals added to the calls for a global climate pact.

Hundreds of thousands more people will die every year from heat stroke and tropical illnesses unless negotiators in Paris can agree a strong global deal to decrease global warming the Global Climate and Health Alliance said.

The Would Health Organization has warned that the effects of extreme weather on the fight against malnutrition, malaria and diarrhea alone will account for an extra 250,000 premature deaths a year by 2030.

“In the case of small island states like Tuvalu, the health impacts of climate change are palpable,” said the island’s health minister.

“When we are talking about climate change, this is important for the future health of our people, and people everywhere.”

John Usamate, health minister for Fiji, said the island was suffering from climate-related diseases such as dengue fever and chikungunya, a disease transmitted by mosquitoes and unknown in Fiji.

“As the climate changes, we are seeing new infectious diseases and many other health impacts,” he said.

The Global Climate and Health Alliance groups more than 1,700 health organizations and 8,200 hospitals and health facilities.

It is said it had collected 13 million signatories(簽字者)from its members, wanting to come to a medical agreement on the need to fight against global warming.

Even without the wider effects of climate change, air pollution from fossil fuels, especially from coal-fired electricity and vehicle emissions(排放), is a major cause of early death.

In the European Union, more than 400,000 early deaths a year are linked to air pollution that cause respiratory disease and some forms of cancer, the European Commission has found.

1What is the possible result of global warming?

A. Many small islands will appear.

B. Many cars will be banned driving.

C. The sea level will continually decrease.

D. Many people will die from climate-related diseases.

2Why did so many people join together?

A. To fight against global warming.

B. To fight off climate-related diseases.

C. To decrease the effects of climate change.

D. To force the government to take measures.

3What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?

A. Cancer is a disease caused by air pollution.

B. More than 400,000 people die each year in Europe.

C. Climate change is the main cause of many diseases.

D. No air pollution, no deaths.

4What is the passage mainly about?

A. How to prevent climate change.

B. How to prevent emission of harmful gases.

C. The effect that climate change has on health.

D. Measures to prevent air pollution.

【題目】Beauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy. Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable jobs. Personal advisors give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractive defendants. But in the executive(主管) circle, beauty can become a liability.

While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder, it is harmful to a woman.

Handsome male executives were considered as having more honesty than plainer men; effort and ability were thought to lead to their success.

Attractive female executives were considered to have less honesty than unattractive ones; their success was connected not with ability but with factors such as luck.

All unattractive women executives were thought to have more honesty and to be more capable than the attractive female executives. Interestingly, though, the rise of the unattractive overnight success was connected more to personal relationships and less to ability than that of the attractive overnight success.

Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman is considered to be more feminine and an attractive man more manly than the less attractive ones. Thus, an attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally manly position appears to lack the "manly" qualities required.

This is true even in politics. "When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women differently," says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates. She asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women, in order of attractiveness. Then the students were told the photographs were of candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they would vote for them.

The results showed that attractive males completely defeated unattractive men, but the women who had ranked most attractive unchangeably received the fewest votes.

1The underlined word "liability" most probably means _________.

A. trouble B. advantage

C. misfortune D. disadvantage

2In traditionally female jobs, attractiveness _________.

A. is of great importance to women

B. often enables women to succeed quickly

C. strengthens the feminine qualities required

D. makes women look more honest and capable

3Bowman's experiment shows that when it comes to politics, attractiveness _________.

A. affects men and women alike

B. turns out to be a disadvantage to men

C. has as little effect on men as on women

D. is more of a disadvantage than an advantage to women

4The author writes this passage to _________.

A. demand equal rights for women

B. state the importance of appearance

C. give advice to job-seekers who are attractive

D. discuss the disadvantages of being attractive
