Tu Youyou, the 85-year-old Chinese pharmacologist(藥理學(xué)家),received the Nobel Prize for medicine in Stockholm on December 10,2015. Tu is the first Chinese Nobel winner in physiology(生理學(xué))or medicine. Also, in 2011, she became the first Chinese person to receive the US-based Lasker Award for clinical medicine.
Based on a fourth-century Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) text, together with her team, she managed to get artemisinin(青蒿素)from sweet wormwood through trial and error and developed an important drug that has significantly reduced death rates among patients suffering from malaria. Tu delivered a speech titled Artemisinin is a Gift from TCM to the World. She has urged more research into the benefits of traditional Chinese medicine and called for joint efforts worldwide to fight against malaria and develop more potential uses for TCM, which she called a "great treasure" with thousands of years' history and empirical knowledge. She said that by combining TCM with modem scientific technologies, "more potential can be discovered in searching for new drugs " .
According to the WHO, more than 240 million people in sub-Saharan Africa have benefited from artemisinin, and more than l. 5 million lives are estimated to have been saved since 2000 thanks to the drug. Apart from its contribution to the global fight against malaria, TCM played a vital role in the deadly outbreak of SARS across China in 2003.
Besides treating viruses, TCM has been most effective in diagnosing diseases, cultivating fitness, treating difficult multisource illnesses, and using nonmedical methods such as acupuncture (鐘刺療法) and breathing exercises.
However, TCM, which is based on a set of beliefs about human biology, is seldom understood or accepted by the West. Tu's success will bring more recognition and respect for TCM, experts say. The Western world should learn to appreciate the value of the treasures of TCM, which will lead to more basic scientific research into ancient TCM texts and ways to explore research findings worldwide.

B. Nothing remains to be done in researching into TCM theories and texts.
C. More research into the value of TCM should be carried out worldwide.
D. TCM only contributes to the fight against malaria and SARS in China.
4.What's the passage mainly about?

How I Turned to Be Optimistic(樂觀的)
I began to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt’s house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then. I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me. I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning.
I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving I thought about all the places I was going to see—the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving never to come back was hardly in my head then.
The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism, but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost—having to study in three schools as a result of family moves. I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother remarried, and things became even more complex for me. Some time passed before my stepfather and I got used to each other. I was often sad, and saw no end to “the hard times. ”
My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with Immigration officers, took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives.
From my experiences I have learned one important rule: Almost all common troubles eventually go away! Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.

Canadian short story writer Alice Munro won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Eighty-two-year-old Munro is only the 13th woman to win the 112-year-old prize.
Munro didn’t publish her first collection of short stories until she was 37 years old, but her stories have always been well-received. Lots of her stories share similar themes and characters, but each story has its own twists and turns.
Even though she’s won Canada’s most famous literary award, the Giller Prize, twice, winning the Nobel Prize for Literature is the cherry on top of Munro’s career. “It brings this incredible recognition, both of her and her career, and of the dedication to the short story, ”said one person.
Along with the well-respected title comes 1.3 million dollars. Munro said everything was “so surprising and wonderful” and that she was “dazed by all the attention and affection that has been coming my way.”
Munro knew she was in the running—she was named the second-most likely person to win this year’s prize, after Haruki Murakami(村上春樹)of Japan—but she never thought that she would win.
Munro’s win also represents the long way Canadian writers have come. “When I began writing there was a very small community of Canadian writers and little attention was paid by the world. Now Canadian writers are read, admired and respected around the globe,” Munro said on Thursday.
She is technically not the first Canadian to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, but many like to think that she is.In 1976 Saul Bellow, who was born in Quebec but moved to Chicago when he was still a child, won the prize. Even though he was born in Canada, he is mostly considered to be an American writer.
“This is a win for us all. Canadians, by our very nature, are not very nationalistic,” said Geoffrey Taylor. “But things like this suddenly make you want to find a flag.”
She wasn’t sure whether she would keep writing if she won the prize, saying that it would be “nice to go out with a bang. But this may change my mind.”
1.What is the feature of Munro’s stories?
A. They have specific themes for children.
B. They have similar story backgrounds.
C. They have their own complicated contents.
D. They have the same characters in each book.
2.For Munro, the Nobel Prize for Literature is an award for______.
A .her love for Canadian culture
B. her devotion to the short story
C. her special form of writing
D. her career of editing short stories
3.What is implied in the sixth paragraph?
A. Canadian writers have long been ignored.
B. Canadian writers are just a small community.
C. Canadian writers paid little attention to the prize.
D. Canadians have a long way to win the prize.
4.What does the passage mainly tell us?
A. How Alice Munro wins the Nobel Prize for Literature.
B. An introduction to the Nobel Prize for Literature.
C. Alice Munro wins the Nobel Prize for Literature.
D. A world-famous writer, Alice Munro.

People think what I do is so wonderful because I interview stars. And I have to admit that when I first started working at Sassy in 1987 I was excited about that part of my job for the first couple of months, anyway. Then I noticed how stars would fool me around for months. I could never get enough time with a star to find out anything interesting, and some acted just simply rudely. I started hating the way I was treated, and I was really disappointed to see that these people I had worshipped (崇拜) before were pretty ordinary. So I decided I would just tell the truth instead of keeping up their myths(神秘) .If the star was a bad guy,I would say so. If I thought anyone was stupid,I did not hold back that information.
I thought readers would appreciate that kind of honesty. Surprisingly, many of them hated me for it. I have gotten so many attacks on my character. In their eyes, being famous is everything, even more desirable than being truly creative and talented.
Why do we need stars? In fact, the media created stars to satisfy our basic need for gossip (閑聊).Over time, talking about people we have never met and we are never likely to meet has become what we are crazy about. Thus, some people are more interested in the personal lives of the stars than in the lives of their own family and their own friends. That is why it is so ridiculous when a star wants to discuss only his or her work in an interview— as we care. We want the dirt on their personal lives.
There is another reason we worship stars. As a whole, our society is not as religious as it once was. It seems that people need something to fulfill them the way religion once did. Star worship exists as an unfulfilling desire for true heroes.
We make them stars, but then their reputation makes us feel unimportant, and we truly feel better about ourselves when they die. I am part of this whole process. No wonder I feel soiled at the end of workday.
1.What are the stars like according to the author?
A.They always treat others rudely.
B.They always talk about something dull.
C.They are actually ordinary people.
D.They are usually honest and polite.
2.We worship stars because .
A.we need true mental heroes to support us
B.we can learn something useful from famous stars
C.we concern about the stars, family and friends
D.we like talking about the stars' dressing styles
3.When the author is writing this article, his tone sounds .
A.excited B.a(chǎn)ngry C.worried D.calm
4.What is the main purpose of the author writing the passage?
A.To show the disadvantages of working with stars.
B.To remind us not to worship famous stars blindly.
C.To laugh at the failures of stars he has interviewed.
D.To talk about the reasons why we worship stars.
