Nowadays1children go to school2few of them have ever asked themselves3they go there. Some children think that they go to school just to learn their mother tongue, English and other foreign languages, history, science,4and a few other5. But why do they learn these things? Are these the only things they should learn at school?
Actually children go to school to6themselves for the time when they will be grown up and will have to7themselves. They learn their own language8they will be able to9with people in foreign countries, make friends with them and learn10about their culture and history. They learn mathematics in order to be able to measure the things around them and calculate sums.11helps them understand something about the world around them and history teaches them about the past and people. Nearly everything they study at school has some use12 in their 13, but there is one more14reason why children go to school.
It is more important to receive education than just learning15.We go to school16to learn how to learn. Learning is not just for school but for life. So even after we have left school, we have to continue to learn. A man who17knows how to learn will always be18because whenever he is faced with a completely new task or problem, he will teach himself how to deal with it in the best way.19, children do not go to school just to learn languages, mathematics, geography, etc. They go to school to20how to learn.

A high school history teacher once told me, "If you make one close friend in school, you will be the most fortunate. A true friend is someone who stays with you for life."1 teaches that he was right. Good friendship is just not easily2.
It is possible that we simply do not stay in one place long enough for a 3 friendship to 4 .However, there can be5disagreement on the need for each of us to think carefully about the kind of friendship we want.
To most of us, friendships are considered very important, but we need to be clear in our 6 the kinds of friendship we want. Are they to be close or7at arm's length? Do we want to8ourselves or do we want to walk on the surface? For some people , many friendships on the surface are 9 enough-- and that's all right. But on some points, we need to10that our expectations are the same as our friends' expectations. The sharing11experience12our tears as well as our dark dreams is the surest way to deepen friendships. What are some of the 15 of friendship? The greatest is the attraction to expect too much time or too soon. Deep relationships16time. Another "major difficulty" is the selfishness to think one "possesses" the other, including his time and attention. Similarly, friendships17actions in return . In18words, you must give as much as you take. Finally there is a question of taking care of . After a busy day of work and play, the body needs to rest. Sleep is necessary for good health. During this time, the body recovers from the activities of the previous day. The rest that you get while sleeping enables your body to prepare itself for the next day.
There are four levels of sleep, each being a little deeper than the one before. As you sleep, your muscles relax little by little. Your heart beats more slowly, and your brain slows down. After you reach the fourth level, your body shifts back and forth from one level of sleep to the other.
Although your mind slows down, from time to time you will dream. Scientists who study sleep state that when dreaming occurs, your eyeballs begin to move more quickly (Although your eyelids are closed). This stage of sleep is called REM, which stands for rapid eye movement.
If you have trouble falling asleep, some people recommend breathing very deeply. Other people believe that drinking warm milk will help make you drowsy. There is also an old suggestion the counting sheep will put you to sleep!

Have you ever noticed advertisements which say “Learn a foreign language in 6 weeks, or your money back! From the first day your pronunciation will be excellent. Just send…” and so on? Of course, it never happens quite like that. The only language that is easy to learn is one’s mother tongue. And think how much practice that gets! Before the Second World War people usually learnt a foreign language in order to read the literature of the country.
Now speaking a foreign language is what most people want. Every year millions of people start learning one. How do they do it? Some people try at home, with books and records of tapes; some use radio or television programs; some use computers and network; others go to evening classes. If they use the language only 2 or 3 times a week, learning it will take a long time, like learning a foreign language at school. A few people try to learn a language fast by studying for 6 or more hours a day. It is clearly easier to learn the language in the country where it is spoken.
However, most people cannot afford this, and for many it is not necessary. They need the language in order to do their work better. For example, scientists and doctors chiefly need to be able to read books and reports in the foreign language. Whether the language is learnt quickly or slowly, it is hard work. Machines and good books will help, but they cannot do the student’s work for him.

  1. 1.

According to some advertisements, you ______ .

    1. A.
have to pay your money if you cannot master a foreign language in 6 weeks.
    2. B.
needn’t pay you money if you cannot learn a foreign language in 6 weeks
    3. C.
must pay your money if you cannot master a foreign language in 6 weeks
    4. D.
will be paid much money if you cannot learn a foreign language in 6 weeks
