There are two factors which determine an individual's intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born with. Human brains differ considerably, some being more capable than others. But no matter how good a brain he has to begin with, an individual will have a low order of intelligence unless he has opportunities to learn. So the second factor is what happens to the individual—the sort of environment in which he is reared (培養(yǎng)). If an individual is handicapped (妨礙) environmentally, it is likely that his brain will fail to develop and he will never attain the level of intelligence of which he is capable.
The importance of environment in determining an individual's intelligence can be demonstrated by the case history of the identical twins, Peter and Mark X. Being identical, the twins had identical brains at birth, and their growth processes were the same. When the twins were three months old, their parents died, and they were placed in separate foster homes. Peter was reared by parents of low intelligence in an isolated community with poor educational opportunities. Mark was reared in the home of well-to-do parents who had been to college. He was read to as a child, sent to good schools, and given every opportunity to be stimulated intellectually. This environmental difference continued until the twins were in their late teens, when they were given tests to measure their intelligence. Mark's I.Q. was 125, twenty-five points higher than the average and fully forty points higher than his identical brother. Given equal opportunities, the twins, having identical brains, would have tested at roughly the same level

Some people believe that international sport creates goodwill between the nations and that if countries play games together, they will learn to live together. Others say that the opposite is true: international competitions encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred. There is probably some truth in both arguments, but in recent years the Olympic Games have done little to support the view that sport encourages international brotherhood. Not only was there the tragic incident including the murder of athletes, but the Games were also ruined by incidents caused mainly by smaller national contests.
One country received its second-place medals with visible anger after the hockey final. There had been noisy scenes at the end of the hockey match, the losers objecting to the final decisions. They were sure that one of their goals should not have been disallowed and that their opponents’ victory was unfair. Their manager was in great anger when he said, “This wasn’t hockey. Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished.” The president of the Federation said later that such behavior could result in the suspension(停賽)of the team for at least three years.
Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played competitively rather than for the love of the game. The suggestion that athletes should compete as individuals, or in non-national teams, might be too much to hope for. But in the present organization of the Olympics there is far too much that encourages  aggressive patriotism(愛(ài)國(guó)主義)

  1. 1.

According to the author, recently the Olympic Games have ______

    1. A.
      created goodwill between the nations

brought about only false national pride
    3. C.
      hardly showed any international friendship
    4. D.
put an end to misunderstanding and hatred
  2. 2.

    3. C.
      won by the other side
    4. D.
      refused to accept
  3. 3.

What did the manager mean by saying, “Hockey and the International Hockey Federation
    are finished"?

    1. A.
His team would no longer take part in international games
    2. B.
Hockey and the Federation are both ruined by the unfair decisions
    3. C.
There should be no more Hockey matches organized by the Federation
    4. D.
      The Federation should break up
  4. 4.

The author gives the example in paragraph 2 to show ______

    1. A.
how false national pride led to undesirable incidents in international games
    2. B.
that sportsmen are often against the final decisions
    3. C.
that competitiveness in the games discourages international friendship
    4. D.
that unfair decisions are common in the Olympic Games
  5. 5.

What conclusion can be drawn from the passage?

    1. A.
The organization of the Olympic Games must be improved
    2. B.
Athletes should compete as individuals in the Olympic Games

There is a Web site called the “World Database of Happiness.” It combines and analyzes the results of hundreds of surveys from around the world that have been conducted on life satisfaction. Most of the findings are predictable, but a few are surprising.
The database makes it clear that there is not a strong connection between material wealth and general contentment. It is a cliché to say that money can’t buy happiness, but the old saying seems to be supported by research. Many people still cling to the belief that gaining riches will be the answer to all their problems, yet they are probably mistaken.
Studies have been carried out on people who acquired sudden wealth, such as lottery winners. In most cases, after the initial joy had worn off, people were not left with a sense of lasting happiness. In fact, they tended to revert to the way they felt before they became rich. Previously contented people continue to be contented, while those who were miserable before sink back into misery.
If material wealth does not bring happiness, then what does? Perhaps happiness has something to do with where you live. The authorities at the World Database on Happiness have surveyed levels of happiness in different countries. Apparently, people in America, Canada, and Singapore are very happy; people living in India and Russia, not surprisingly, are not happy.
Other surveys consistently point to the importance of relationships. Family relationships in particular seem to be the key to long-term contentment. The Web site suggests that falling in love and having children are two of the situations that bring the greatest happiness.
Nowadays people look to technology as an alternative source of satisfaction. People increasingly spend more time alone watching TV or surfing the Internet rather than spending time with family. Can technology truly make people happy? It is too difficult to tell, but one thing is sure: If the Web site’s research is accurate, time spent with your family is a better investment than time spent making money

Recently I spoke to some of my students about what they wanted to do after they graduated, and what kind of job prospects they thought they had.
Given that I teach students who are training to be doctors, I was surprised to find that most thought that they would not be able to get the jobs they wanted without “outside help”. “What kind of help is that?” I asked, expecting them to tell me that they would need a relative or family friend to help them out.
“Surgery(外科手術(shù))”, one replied. I was pretty alarmed by that response. It seems that the graduates of today are increasingly willing to go under the knife to get ahead of others when it comes to getting a job. One girl told me that she was considering surgery to increase her height. “They break your legs, put in special extending screws, and slowly expand the gap between the two ends of the bone as it regrows, you can get at least 5cm taller!”
At that point, I was shocked. I am short, I can’t deny that, but I don’t think I would put myself through months of agony(痛苦) just to be a few centimeters taller. I don’t even bother to wear shoes with thick soles, as I’m not trying to hide the fact that I am just not tall! It seems to me that there is a trend toward wanting “perfection”, and that is an ideal that just does not exist in reality.
No one is born perfect, yet magazines, TV shows and movies present images of thin, tall, beautiful people as being the norm. Advertisements for slimming aids, beauty treatments and cosmetic surgery clinics fill the pages of newspapers, further creating an idea that “perfection” is a requirement, and that it must be purchased, no matter what the cost. In my opinion, skills, rather than appearance, should determine how successful a person is in his chosen career

    3. C.
get an advantage over others in job-hunt
    4. D.

  3. 3.

According to the passage, the author believes that ______

    1. A.
everyone should purchase perfection, whatever the cost
    2. B.
it’s right for graduates to ask for others to help them out in hunting for jobs
    3. C.

One of my China Dialogue colleagues in Beijing recently bought a Philips energy-saving light bulb to replace a standard one.He was happy with his choice. It may have cost 30 yuan (just under US$4.50) - ten times the price of a filament (燈絲) bulb - but he wanted to save energy as part of his low-carbon lifestyle. And according to the shopkeeper, he would save, in the long run, much more than the 30 yuan he was spending.
Yet only one month later, his expensive light bulb blew up, before he had saved even a small part of the purchase price. Will he stick to his high-cost, low-carbon lifestyle?
China's environmental organizations have started to advocate low-carbon lifestyles and the decrease of carbon footprints to help fight against climate change. But they have overlooked one fact: in China, low-carbon living comes at a high cost.It means buying energy-saving bulbs and appliances, and environmentally friendly building materials and daily goods.Cost can no longer be the only standard for purchases. An energy-saving and environmentally friendly product is more expensive than a standard alternative - whether it's a simple light bulb or the house it shines. For average consumers, even buying an ordinary bulb is a huge burden. How can we persuade ordinary people to choose an energy-saving residence? This is not a trend they can afford to follow; perhaps this fashion is only for the rich.
Most consumers today do not cause huge carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.Their responsibility lies not in choosing a low-carbon lifestyle today, but in avoiding a high-carbon life in the future. The principle of "common but differentiated responsibility" - a basis of sustainable development - can be applied here as well.
In China, low-carbon living still is resisted by a lack of social infrastructure(基礎(chǔ)設(shè)施). Even if your salary allows you to make that choice, nobody is there to help you accomplish it.
Consider energy-saving homes. You need to find out whether or not the developer has used natural materials wherever possible; how effective the insulation(絕緣物、隔熱物) is; and what the green credentials of installed equipment are.You can read up a little, but you'll still be lucky to avoid being puzzled by the developers' marketing. Many so-called energy-saving buildings are nothing of the sort, and some are even more energy-hungry than the average home - as Li Taige warned in his article "Energy-efficient buildings? Not always", on China Dialogue last August.

  1. 1.

What may probably be the best title of this passage?

    1. A.
To purchase a cheap bulb - your wise alternative.
    2. B.
To choose an energy-saving residence - a must of your life
    3. C.
      To learn a low-carbon lifestyle - each citizen's responsibility
    4. D.
To learn a low-carbon lifestyle - a promising but difficult purpose
  2. 2.

Why does the writer say this fashion is only for the rich in the fourth paragraph?

    1. A.
Because the cost is a very important standard for purchases
    2. B.
Because buying an ordinary bulb is very expensive
    3. C.
Because energy-saving products are more expensive than the common alternatives
    4. D.
Because rich people like to follow this trend
  3. 3.

What does the writer think of energy-saving homes?

    1. A.
Most of them are environmentally friendly
    2. B.
They are musts of low-carbon lifestyle of Chinese
    3. C.
They are huge burdens for Chinese people
    4. D.
Many of them are more in name than in reality
  4. 4.

We can infer from the passage that ____.

    1. A.
Using energy-saving bulbs and appliances is a fashion.
    2. B.
It's easy for most Chinese to try to learn a low-carbon lifestyle.
    3. C.
All citizens in China don’t have the same responsibility in living a low-carbon lifestyle.
    4. D.
Most Chinese families cannot afford to purchase an energy-saving residence
  5. 5.

What is the writer's attitude towards the low-carbon lifestyle?

    1. A.
      informative and entertaining
    2. B.
      supportive but cautious
    3. C.
      negative but wise
    4. D.
