                                  C

                              ★★★★★

Mathematical ability and musical ability may not seem to be connected on the surface, but people who have researched the subject and studied the brain say that they are. Research for my book Late-Talking Children drove home the point to me. Three quarters of the bright but speech-delayed children in the group I studied had a close relative who was an engineer,a ma.thematician or a scientist, and four fifths had a close relative who played a musical instrument. The children themselves usually took readily to mathematics and other analytical subjects or to music.

Black, white and Asian children in this group showed the same patterns. However,it is clear that blacks have been greatly overrepresented in the development of American popular music and greatly underrepresented in such fields as mathematics, science and engineering.

If the abilities required in analytical fields and in music are so closely related, how can there be this great discrepancy? One reason is that the development of mathematical and other such abilities requires years of formal schooling, while certain musical talents can be developed with little or no formal training, which has happened with a number of well-known black musicians.

It is precisely in those kinds of music where one can acquire great skills without formal training that blacks have excelled(擅長(zhǎng)) in popular music rather than classical music, piano rather than violin, and blues rather than opera. This is readily understandable, given that most blacks, for most of American history, have not had either the money or the leisure for long years of formal study in music.

Blacks have not merely held their own in American popular music. They have played an extremely large role in the development of jazz, both traditional and modem. None of this presupposes any special (先天的) ability of blacks in music. On the contrary,it is perfectly consistent with blacks having no more such inborn ability than anyone else, but being limited to being able to express such ability in narrower channels than others who have had the money, the time and the formal education to spread out over a wider range of musie,as well as into mathematics, science and engineering.

9. What is the main idea of Paragraph 1 ?

   A. More people are good at music than mathematics.

   B. Most talented people are good at analytical subjects.

   C. Mathematical ability and musical ability are connected.

   D. Mathematical ability is more important than musical ability.

10. The underlined word “discrepancy” in Paragraph 3 probably means .

   A. purpose          B. difference

   C. innate ability   D. analytical ability

11. Blacks are extremely good at popular music because.

   A. they lack formal training ^

   B. they don't like classical music

   C. they lack strong analytical ability

   D. violin and opera are harder for them

12. Which of the following questions is the text mainly concerned with?

   A. What kinds of music require formal training?

   B. What contributions have black musicians made?

   C. Can kids’ musical ability and mathematical ability be influenced by their relatives?

   D. Why have blacks excelled in popular music in American history?

In my junior year of college I came to a university in Madrid,Spain. The experience of studying abroad has changed my life greatly. Here is how.

My Spanish phone has no access to the Internet. It isn’t  easy for me. But without Google to answer my questions,I often ask my teachers for help. When I need directions,I look up at street signs instead of looking down at my phone. It turns out that I have absorbed more when my eyes aren't  glued to my screen.

In my hometown,if I wasn't in a quiet library,I could not focus on studying. However, here, without a library nearby,I have to find other locations to study. I choose to study in the darkest comer of a cafe, determining to stay away from anyone who wants to chat. As time goes by,I’ ve become habituated to the laughter and light. Now when I face a problem,an encouraging smile is all I need to get back on track. What starts off as a method of survival has changed into a love of cafes and the ability to work anywhere.

In fact, relationships have developed more naturally abroad. With wonderful friends waiting for me back in Atlanta,I feel no pressure to make as many friends as possible. If I discover someone isn't  my cup of tea,no sweat; I have the freedom to develop quality over quantity.

Before a family or school trip,my mom used to plan every detail. But in Madrid, every aspect of the trip—transportation, lodging activities, and food — is my responsibility and anxiety runs high. But while I lose a peaceful pre-trip night of sleep,my uncertain adventure is well worth the price. Traveling on my own gives me a cultural awareness that I would never understand when I blindly followed someone else's  plan. I am a traveler and the trip is my own.

Tourists and animal lovers hoping to see a bear in Sequoia National Park this fall probably stand a better chance of spotting one in this tiny town at the park’s  entrance. Three Rivers is crawling with hungry bears driven down from the mountains by drought in search of food to fatten up for winter. Everyone seems to have photos of the creatures on their phones.

There's no doubt a bear invasion is going on in this town of 2 ,200 that is home to a mix of park employees, businessmen, artists and so on. It is also a place for retirement for Hollywood types that include Anjelica Huston and William Shatner. Most seem delighted by the visiting black bears.

The four-year drought has destroyed the berry crop in the Sierra Nevada and led to fewer flcwws (橡子),forcing the bears into the valleys carved by the branches of the Kaweah River that give this town its name.

Bears have climbed on roofs for acoms and one was found exploring a bathroom under restoration in a house.A bear tore apart the outer walls of a resident's pump house and a music studio to get at acoms.

The Kaweah Commonwealth reported that bears have been slaughtered, but game wardens (野生動(dòng)物保把區(qū)的管理員) said it was a lie because of a lack of evidence, such as names of suspects, vehicle descriptions and dead bears.         The next (繡球花) you grow could really save your life. A biologist at Colorado State University has taught plant proteins how to spot exp/osfves1 (炸藥) .

Picture this at an airport: A terrorist rolls through the sliding doors of a station with a bomb packed into his luggage. All of a sudden, the leafy, green hydrangea ringing the gates goes white 往s a sheet. That's  the proteins inside the plants telling the authorities that they* ve picked up the chemical trace of the terrorist's  explosive.

“Plants can't run and hide,” says June Medford, the biologist who's spent the last seven years figuring out how to get the plant to fight against terrorism. “If an insect comes by,it has to respond to it. And it already has its own particular way to respond.”

That would be the “receptor (受體)” proteins in its DNA. which respond naturally to threats. If an insect chews on a leaf, for instance, the plant releases a series of chemical signals called terpenoids,Medford says, that thickens the surface of the leaf in defense.

Medford and her team designed a computer model to direct the receptors: Basically, the computer program instructs the protein to react when it comes in contact with chemicals found in explosives or common air or water pollutants.

Right now,Medford's  labs have genetically designed plants going white when they come into contact with explosives. But that's in a research lab, where the amount of light is constant.

Medford says her goal is to get her plants as sensitive as a dog's nose. But there is one big problem: Medford probably thinks it's   not easy to get the plants to react to ammonium nitrate,a common chemical used for home-made bombs.

9. If the hydrangea discovers explosives,it will .

   A. change color              B. produce flowers

   C. make its leaves thinner   D. give off a special smell

10. The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refers to.

   A. It will come into use in two years.

   B. It has been studied for seven years.

   G. It is chiefly based on medical science.

Do you think we can understand people's characters from the way they write? Many people would disagree with the idea. However, some business leaders and a group called “graphologists(筆跡學(xué)家)”believe our personalities are revealed in our handwriting.

Graphology is a term used to describe the practice of analyzing people's  handwriting to determine what kind of personalities they have. It's  thought that certain letter formations and patterns in wnting reveal personality types.

Many organizations in France invite graphologists to help with the selection of employees. Applicants are required to submit a handwritten letter so that graphologists can determine if they have the right personality for the job. Handwriting that is big and carefully planned is thought to indicate that the writer is outgoing and confident. Thus, jobs that require such a personality would be given to people with this type of handwriting. People with plain handwriting who use small letters would be thought to be shy and thus not suitable for the job.

The slant(傾斜) of a person's handwritjng is ajso thought to reveal something about his character. Writing with a slant to the right、vShows that the person thinks about the future, while writing with a slant to the left reveals a tendency to be stuck in the past. A person whose letters are round rather than (有棱角的) would be thought to be friendly.

Though graphology is widely used,it is not supported by scientific evidence. The reason it seems to work is that the personality descriptions revealed are highly generalized. It is much like a horoscope(占星術(shù)) or palm reading, which describes personalities using very general terms. And people tend to notice the parts of the description that are true while ignoring the parts that are not true.

5. Applicants* handwriting is analyzed mainly to find out whether they .

   A. have the ability to handle the job

   B. can devote themselves to the job

   C. were good students in the past

   D. have big plans for the future

   A. The size and angle of letters.

   B. The space between letters or words.

   C. The scientific evidence of graphology.

   D. The speed and pressure of the writing.

   C. A person who has a right slant in his writing is future-oriented.

   D. Large writing shows someone likes to live in the past.
