The book, Aliens Ate My Homework, is set in a small town in the United States. By the way the characters talk to each other and the description of items from their daily lives, I think the story takes place within the last 10 years. It is a story about a boy named Rod Allbright who goes to school like any other normal kid. Unfortunately, the class bully(恃強(qiáng)凌弱者) always picks on him because he is overweight. While he’s working on a school project for the science fair, tiny aliens(外星人) come, crashing through his bedroom window in a spaceship. They have come to the earth to get another alien, an evil one named BKR. He is known in other galaxies(星系) for his cruelties. Rod gets bullied throughout the entire novel. The bully’s name is Billy Becker, who is also called BKR! Rod does not discover that Billy is a bad alien until later on.

This book has lots of action and the main character is fun to read about. The most exciting part is when the aliens and Rod find out that BKR is Billy Becker and they skip school and go to search his house. They get caught when BKR comes home from school. He traps them in a storing device where he keeps his alien items. They break free of the device and escape from his house with some difficulty. Rod Allbright is fun to read about because he can never tell a lie. This gets him into trouble when the aliens eat his homework and he can’t make up an excuse for the teacher.

The main idea that the author shares is that there could be other galaxies out in the universe with intelligent life forms who could be almost the same as humans. In this book, the aliens are just like humans in the way they think even though they look different and have a different language. I have learned that if you are nice to people they will be nice in return. This is proven in the book because Rod is nice to the aliens and they return the favor.

A. look for resources

B. do research on the earth

C. find an alien who has got lost

D. catch a cruel alien

a. Billy is found to be BKR.

b. Tiny aliens come to the earth.

c. Rod and the tiny aliens go to search BKR’s house.

d. Rod and the tiny aliens are trapped, but later escape.

A. abcd B. abdc C. bacd D. bcad

3.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A. It pays to be kind to others.

B. It pays to work for the science fair.

C. Aliens are cruel to humans.

D. Aliens and humans are alike.

4.The passage is mainly about_______.

A. aliens B. school bullying

C. a science fiction story D. a boy’s school life

Darling Kelli

I’m so sorry I will not get to see you grow up as I so want to. Please don’t blame people or the world for this. I wish I didn’t have cancer and you didn’t have to see me in pain as you often do now.

_1._ We don’t have that time. I won’t be able to drop you off on your first day at big school, pick you up after your first date, hold you when your heart hurts or cheer when you graduate.

But while your old dad is still around I thought I’d try to give you some life advice. I hope it gives you some comfort.

School

Everyone will say it’s important to work hard at school. Hopefully you’ll always do your best. I did well at school but did it do me much good in life? Not really. __2.__

Mummy

You and your mum will argue at times, especially when you’re a teenager. __3.__ Give Mummy a hug when she is feeling sad and help each other get through any horrible times when I am gone. When you’re a teenager you might think your friends are right and your mum is wrong. But she has to make hard decisions for you. Treat her well.

Christmas & birthdays

On your first Christmas without me, I’d love if you and Mummy would light a candle and remember me for a few minutes. It would be great if you two did the monkey dance together. That’s something to make me smile from up above.

I’ve given Nanny Sue presents for all your birthdays. I wish I could be there to see you open them. __4.__

In life, many people will say you cannot do things. You make up your mind. Can you? Big challenges involve risks so make smart choices. Those who told me I couldn’t do certain things didn’t want me to do them. If you want something, it is nearly always possible, so do your best. I’m sure there’s a lot you can achieve!

Most people know that Marie Curie was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize, and the first person to win it twice. However, few people know that she was also the mother of a Nobel Prize winner.

Born in September, 1987, Irene Curie was the first of the Curies’ two daughters. Along with nine other children whose parents were also famous scholars, Irene studied in their own school, and her mother was one of the teachers. She finished her high school education at the College of Sévigné in Paris.

Irene entered the University of Paris in 1914 to prepare for a degree in mathematics and physics. When World War I began, Irene went to help her mother, who was using X-ray facilities(設(shè)備) to help save the lives of wounded soldiers. Irene continued the work by developing X-ray facilities in military hospitals in France and Belgium. Her services were recognized in the form of a Military’s Medal by the French government.
In 1918, Irene became her mother’s assistant at the Curie Institute. In December 1924, Frederic Joliot joined the Institute, and Irene taught him the techniques required for his work. They soon fell in love and were married in 1926. Their daughter Helene was born in 1927 and their son Pierre five years later.

Like her mother, Irene combined family and career. Like her mother, Irene was awarded a Nobel Prize, along with her husband, in 1935. Unfortunately, also like her mother, she developed leukemia because of her work with radioactivity(輻射能). Irene Joliot-Curie died from leukemia on March 17, 1956.

Honey from the African forest is not only a kind of natural sugar, it is also delicious. Most people, and many animals, like eating it. However, the only way for them to get that honey is to find a wild bees' nest and take the honey from it. Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it is difficult to find them. In parts of Africa, though, people and animals looking for honey have a strange and unexpected helper----a little bird called a honey guide.

The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax in the beehives (蜂房). The little bird cannot reach this wax, which is deep inside the bees' nest. So, when it finds a suitable nest, it looks for someone to help it. The honey guide gives a loud cry that attracts the attention of both passing animals and people. Once it has their attention, it flies through the forest, waiting from time to time for the curious animal or person as it leads them to the nest. When they finally arrive at the nest, the follower reaches in to get at the delicious honey as the bird patiently waits and watches. Some of the honey, and the wax, always falls to the ground, and this is when the honey guide takes its share.

Scientists do not know why the honey guide likes eating the wax, but it is very determined in its efforts to get it. The birds seem to be able to smell wax from a long distance away. They will quickly arrive whenever a beekeeper is taking honey from his beehives, and will even enter churches when beeswax candles are being lit.

1.Why is it difficult to find a wild bees' nest?

A. It's small in size.

B. It's hidden in trees.

C. It's covered with wax.

D. It's hard to recognize.

2.What do the underlined words "the follower" in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A. A bee. B. A bird.

C. A honey seeker. D. A beekeeper.

3.The honey guide is special in the way .

A. it gets its food B. it goes to church

C. it sings in the forest D. it reaches into bees' nests

4.What can be the best title for the text?

A. Wild Bees B. Wax and Honey

C. Beekeeping in Africa D. Honey-Lover's Helper

When I was growing up in America, I was ashamed of my mother’s Chinese English. Because of her English, she was often treated unfairly. People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.

My mother has realized the limitations of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she used to have me call people on phone to pretend I was her. I was forced to ask for information or even to yell at people who had been rude to her. One time I had to call her stockbroker (股票經(jīng)紀(jì)人). I said in an adolescent voice that was not very convincing, “This is Mrs.Tan...” And my mother was standing beside me,whispering loudly, “Why he don’t send me check already two weeks ago?”And then, in perfect English I said, “I’m getting rather concerned. You agreed to send the check two weeks ago, but it hasn’t arrived.”

Then she talked more loudly, “What he want? I come to New York tell him front of his boss.” And so I turned to the stockbroker again, “I can’t tolerate any more excuse. If I don’t receive the check immediately, I am going to have to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week.”

The next week we ended up in New York. While I was sitting there red-faced, my mother, the real Mrs.Tan, was shouting to his boss in her broken English.

When I was a teenager, my mother’s broken English embarrassed me. But now, I see it differently. To me, my mother’s English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It is my mother tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is vivid, direct, and full of observation and wisdom. It was the language that helped me shape the way I saw things, expressed ideas, and made sense of the world.

In China, if you are not married by the time you are 30, you are in for trouble: social blame and pressure from family and friends can get you down. And if you are a woman, it’s even worse.

Many young people get married simply to get other people off their backs (免受別人的指責(zé)) . This is a serious compromise (妥協(xié)). One ends up not marrying the ideal partner.

There are, however, a few young people who refuse to compromise: if they can’t find a good marriage partner, they say, they would rather not marry at all.

34-year-old Kate is a university lecturer in English. She said she would not describe herself as celibatarian (獨(dú)身主義者) but simply a woman who hasn’t come across the right man yet. She has sharp comments for the way in which the old generation looks at marriage.

“Many people think marriage is a duty---to your parents, family and society. Nobody cares if your marriage is happy or not, she said, I think this is very wrong and I intend to live and act according to my own will.”

Happily for her, her parents are open-minded and not put pressure on her. But the same does not apply to her friends. They are constantly trying to get her together with some young man or another. She always refuses politely.

1.Miss Kate refuses to get together with some young man or another because _______.

A. he is either too old or too young

B. she doesn’t think he is the right man she wants

C. he is either important or little learned

D. he doesn’t have good manners

A. In China, one may face social blame and family pressure if one hasn’t got married by the age of 30.

B. Miss Kate wants to many a worthy young man.

C. Miss Kate won’t compromise if she can’t have her ideal marriage.

D. Miss Kate’s parents are always worried about her marriage.

4.If marriage is regarded as a duty to society, __________.

A. nobody will pay attention to whether you are happy or not in your family life

B. everybody will be happy and satisfied

C. you can easily find an ideal partner

D. young people will have nothing to worry about in marriage

How to Teach a Child Respect

As a child grows out of being an infant(嬰兒)and begins to notice and react to the world around them, you may find yourself wondering how you possibly pass all of the things that they need to become a responsible, respectful adult. 1. A child who learns to respect all he meets not only receives respect from others in kind, but learns to respect himself as well.

Instructions

★ Show your child respect. This is perhaps the best way to teach your child how to respect others. Listen to your child by giving her your full attention and she will learn to listen to you, understanding how important this is in relationships.

2. The more you say “please” and “thank you” to your child, the more likely he will learn to use them with you and others. Politeness then becomes a normal part of any conversation.

★ Agree to disagree. 3. Explain your decision so that she will understand your reasoning and expect respectful responses. Disagreeing with you doesn’t equate to disobedience.

★ Control your impulse to overreact. When a situation arises between you and your child that requires calmness, keep in mind that you are supposed to be modeling correct behavior. 4.

★ Praise, praise, praise! So much is focused on what a child does wrong and how to correct it that the accomplishments are not celebrated enough. 5.

A.Teach your child manners by using polite requests and responses.

B.Try to remember that a child won’t always agree with you.

C.Respect is necessary for a meaningful and successful life.

D.If he sees you lose your temper, he is more likely to respond that way in future.

E.A child may act like he pleases, but will respect being given limits.

F.When you see your child exhibit respectful behavior, make sure he knows just how proud you are of him.

G.Signs such as sudden poor performance in school, behaviors like fears and threats accompany behavior problems in children.
