When I was at university, I worked at the café. Every day I would see people come in, sit there, drink coffee, do some reading or do just whatever they feel like doing. Oh, how I envied them. I wanted so much to do what they were doing. However, I couldn’t because I had to work for nine hours a day and study for the rest of it. So such a desire remained a silly, yet life-ling dream.

Yesterday, I achieved it because I was a director after graduation. It was a perfect day to sit and relax. I chatted with my friends. Then, an old man entered the café with his whole body shaking. Every step seemed to be a huge struggle. He looked so familiar to me but yet, I wasn’t quite sure. While his nurse was ordering at the counter, I walked near to the old man. He had been one of our regular customers at the café! His name is Candido Filio. He is a retired professor of the University of the Philippines for more than 20 years. He founded Scrabble Organization and in his lifetime, he received awares for his works. Mr Filio and I shared a very special interest during my days in that café. He was one of the smartest people I knew. Every day, I watched him write his book and he would always discuss bits and pieces of it with me. Every Sunday the Philippine Star Newspaper had a special page for word puzzles and Filio held the record for being the one who answered all of them in less than five minutes. He encouraged me to try to solve them too and for months and months I did my best to beat him but couldn’t make it.

When I looked at him yesterday, I was both sad and shocked. While we were chatting, I still sensed that he was still sharp, smart and witty. He always loved to laugh, without wasting any minute to enjoy life.
