GUANGZHOU-Guangzhou is using a variety of high-tech measures to ensure air quality is up to scratch(達(dá)到標(biāo)準(zhǔn))for the upcoming Asian Games.
As of September 1, owners of large-sized vehicles, such as limousines, are ordered to use the highest national standard of gasoline, which pollutes less.
The city’s environmental protection bureau(環(huán)保局)has set up 29 checkpoints to monitor automobile emissions along with four mobile units. Since August 1, the bureau has also carried out checks on vehicles’ emission control systems to make sure they are working correctly.
About 30 percent of the total 9,300 government cars and the city’s police officers’ cars will be off the road from October 12 to December 22, in order to decrease pollution emissions, said Li Zhuo, director of the motor pollution control office, Guangzhou environmental protection bureau.
Meanwhile, all construction sites in the city, except those with special authorization, will be asked to stop building from the end of September to the end of December, said Zhang Guangning, secretary of Guangzhou Party committee.
In November, the city usually registers its worst air quality due to the colder weather, which makes it more difficult to monitor pollution.
Jian Jianyang, director of the pollution control division at the environmental protection bureau, said factories that pollute excessively will have to limit their production during the Games and will not be allowed to return to normal production levels until December 20.
Guangzhou began to look into improving its air quality after it won its bid to host the 16th Asian Games in July 2004.

Aftershock, a movie about the 1976 Tangshan earthquake, has grossed over 160 million yuan at the Chinese box office since its opening on July 22, the State Administration of Radio Film and Television(SARFT)said Monday.
The movie earned more than 100 million yuan within three days of its release, breaking the Chinese box office record previously held by The Founding of a Republic.
Aftershock set it first box office record on its release day when it earned 36.2 million yuan-the highest box office ever for a local movie on its opening day.
It is about a mother’s three-decade journey leading to an emotional reunion with the daughter she thought she had lost in the earthquake. The Tangshan earthquake left more than 240,000 dead.

Fifteen minutes of the movie’s total length of two and a half hours were for these advertisements, which have drawn criticism from the media as well as the public.
In an interview with Xinhua on Monday, Zhang Hongsen, vice director of the SARFT film department said advertisements placed in moves were necessary for film makers to make profits, as piracy(盜版行為)poses a threat to their revenues(財(cái)政收入).

Bright red post boxes, the Queen and queuing-What do they all have in common? They are all part of British life. Or so I thought.
However, the ability to queue for long periods of time, once believed to be a traditional character of the British, is no longer tolerated by people in the UK, according to a survey done for British bank Barclays.
Once upon a time, queuing was seen as normal. During the Second World War, everyone had to queue up to receive their daily ration(配給)of foods. In fact, if you didn’t stand up and wait in line with all the others, it was seen as impolite.
The famous English double-deck buses, with only one entrance, might also help explain why queuing was seen as a part of life. Almost always, there is queue to get on. But perhaps the British are tired of being pushed past by the Spanish, the Italians or the French as they queue up to get a table at a restaurant. The people of these other European countries have more than one entrance to their buses, which could explain their more relaxed attitude to the queue.
Two minutes is now the longest time most British are prepared to stand and wait. But could it be that the Internet, which allows us to carry out tasks quickly, is the main reason why British people are no longer prepared to queue?
“Used to buying without delay, customers are even abandoning purchases rather than wait their turn,” says Stuart Neat of Barclaycard. “Shoppers are also less likely to queue for long if the item they are buying is of low value.”
Perhaps I will have to replace “queuing” with “impatience” in my list of things I associate with the British.
60. What can we learn about the tradition of queuing in Britain from the article?
A. It was considered as a symbol of polite behavior among the British.
B. It is what makes British different from other European countries.
C. It was a product of the slow pace of life in old times.
D. It is a long time tradition as old as the queen.
61. According to the passage, the British gradually stopped queuing because _______.
A. they prefer shopping online to going to the shops
B. they follow the example of foreigners in Britain
C. the use of the Internet has changed their way of life
D. British buses now have more than one entrance
62. The purpose of the passage is to _______.
A. list some things that are associated with the British
B. introduce the change in the British way of life
C. express writer’s approval of changes in the British way of life
D. complain about the British losing patience
63. Which is the best title of the passage?
A. Queuing Is a Part of Life Now. B. The British Queue up at a Restaurant.
C. UK Won’t Wait Now. D. The British Have No Patience Now.

For some time past, it has been widely accepted that babies-and other creatures-learn to do things because certain acts lead to “ rewards ”, and there is no reason to doubt that this is true. But it used also to be widely believed that effective rewards, at least in the early time, had to be directly connected to such basic physiological(生理的)“drives” as thirst or hunger. In other words, a baby would learn if he got food or drink or some sort of physical comfort, not otherwise.
It is now clear that this is not so. Babies will learn to behave in ways that produce results in the world with no rewards except success in sight.
Papousek began his studies by using milk in the normal way to “reward” the babies and to teach them to carry out some simple movements, such as turning the head to one side or the other. Then he noticed that a baby who had had enough to drink would refuse the milk but would still go on making the learned response with clear signs of pleasure. So he began to study the children’s responses in situations where no milk was provided. He quickly found that children as young as four months would learn to turn their heads to right or left if the movement “turned on” some lights-and indeed that they were able to learn quite complex turns to bring about this result, for example, two left or two right, or even to make as many as three turns to one side.
Papousek’s light experiment was placed directly in front of the babies and he made the interesting observation that sometimes they would not turn back to watch the light closely although they would “smile and bubble” when the light was on. Papousek concluded that it was not the sight of the lights which pleased them; it was the success they were achieving in solving the problem, in mastering the skill, and that there exists a basic human desire to make sense of the world and bring it under intended control.
56. The author uses the widely accepted concept to start with the passage in order to _______ .
A. arouse the readers’ interest
B. make readers understand the new discovery smoothly
C. serve as a base to start his new discovery
D. encourage readers to raise questions
57. Which of the following is NOT the key factor in Papousek’s study?
A. The research method from milk to light.
B. The different responses of the babies.
C. The discovery of the result is not the reward.
D. The place or situations where the display is conducted.
58. The reason for the babies smiling and bubbling in Paragraph 4 is probably that _______.
A. the can watch the lights closely and curiously
B. they are offered milk as “reward”
C. they succeed in “turning on” the lights
D. the lights serve as basic “drives”
59. The pleasure the babies showed is a reflection of _______.
A. basic physiological “drives”
B. a basic human desire to understand and control the world
C. some sort of physical comfort
D. a basic desire to show their learned skills
