One Christmas Eve a few years ago, an English couple received a very special telephone call. It was only a twenty-second call but it was very important. It was their fifteen-year-old daughter, who had disappeared six months before, that rang them. "I'm phoning to wish you Merry Christmas," she said, "I love you."

Ronal and Edwina Hayden were so happy that they started a special telephone service called "Alive and Well". The service helps parents to keep in contact with children who have run away from home.

Young people can phone "Alive and Well" and leave a message for their parents. The telephones are answered by answering machines. So no one can speak to the child or make him return home. Parents of runaway children who are under eighteen can ask the police to bring their children home. So children do not want to tell their parents where they are. Through "Alive and Well" they can telephone their parents without worrying about this or giving their address.

The Haydens and their helpers write down the tape-recorded telephone messages and contact the address given. Many of the 30, 000 British teenagers who have left home are probably in London. For only two pence they can go into a telephone coin box and call their parents. They can dial 5675339 and stop a parent's worry: Is he dead or alive?

Nearly everyone is shy in some way. If shyness is making you uncomfortable, it may be time for a few lessons in self-confidence(自信).You can build your confidence by following some suggestions from doctors and psychologists(心理學(xué)家).

Make a decision not to hold back in conversations. What you have to say is just as important as what other people say. And don't turn down party invitations just because of your shyness.

Prepare yourself for being with others in groups. Make a list of the good qualities you have. Then make a list of ideas, experiences, and skills you would like to share with other people. Think about what you would like to say in advance. Then say it.

If you start feeling shy in a group, take a deep breath and focus your attention on other people. Remember, you are not alone. Other people are concerned with the impression they are making, too.
