If you ask me for my biggest impression of what America’s like over the last three years,I’d say it is how rich and different the student life is. For example,at Princeton,we have more than 100 student organizations planning all kinds of campus activities-from sports, band dancing to juggling and acting to translation, design, publishing, volunteering and camping. You name it.
During my freshman (大一學(xué)生) year, I tried a lot of activities, from dancing to design to newspapers. Then I found my passion(愛好)in the environment and volunteerism. I joined Greening Princeton and Student Volunteer Council. A year later,I’d become the publicity chair and project coordinator(協(xié)調(diào)員)of these two clubs.
Student activities give us a chance to do things we care about and are good at. If we have a good idea,we can put it forward at a meeting, find interested people to form a team, and then apply for funding from the school. We have full control of the project and the ability to make our ideas happen. For example,I came up with the idea of Daylight Dining and was supported by my club Greening Princeton. I wrote a proposal, presented it in front of the college master, and communicated with the head of Dining Services. After a few followups, this project was carried out.
One other benefit of extra curricular (課外的) activities is the friendship that comes with them. Once you become part of a group,it is much easier to adjust to college life. You realize you are not alone. This will most likely increase your study efficiency and in turn help your academics. My headmaster once told me,“Stand on your tiptoes.” In that way,we not only have a better view of life, but will also put out our comfort zone. Getting involved in extra curricular activities has given me the opportunity to stand on my tiptoes.
Make yourself try new things and stick to the things that matter to you. This is one piece of advice I have. Remember, college is a color palette(調(diào)色板). You are the artist who can add your own colors.

Eat less and exercise more—it has long been a magic word for reducing those extra weight. But now it seems that all the hard work may have been in vain.
Scientists say there are ten other reasons why people just keep getting bigger. They say that sleeping habits, central heating, medicines and even some pollutants (污染物質(zhì)) can play a role in weight gain.
Traditionally, people have focused on diet and exercise to solve the problem. However the scientists from top US and Canadian universities say that other things must be considered.
Lack of sleep could be partly the reason. In recent years, the average night’s sleep has dropped from nine hours to just seven. Sleep shortage changes levels of the hormones (荷爾蒙) that control food intake and body fat and increase hunger and appetite.
If it is too hot or too cold, we burn calories (卡路里) to cool down or heat up. But if the temperature is just right, the calories may be turned into body fat instead.
Those who take medicine to control their blood pressure can often put on weight. Similarly, studies have shown that going on the Pill can add to a woman’s weight.
Mother nature may also be the reason, with our body shape being partly inherited (遺傳的). The overweight are also more likely to settle with partners of a similar size. And their children are more likely to be obese (肥胖的).
And the use of pollutants is on the rise, say the researchers. The man-made chemicals in pesticides (殺蟲劑) and plastics can lead to weight gain.
Your mother’s age and your weight at birth are also important, with older woman more likely to have obese children and underweight babies having a bigger chance of being obese in later life.
We also tend to put on weight as we get older. Finally, giving up smoking can also help pile on the pounds.
The scientists from Yale, Cornell and Johns Hopkins said there was some evidence supporting poor diet and lack of exercise as the main causes of obesity.
68. Which is commonly thought to be effective in losing weight?
A. To have operation to cut extra fat.
B. To take pills and avoid fatty food.
C. To sleep less to burn more calories.
D. To have less food and take more exercise.
69. Which of the following factors doesn’t lead to overweight?
A. Regular and enough sleep. B. Comfortable living environment.
C. Not enough physical exercise. D. harmful chemicals in the food.
70. Which of the following statements would the author agree to?
A. Lack of sleep leads you to take in more food.
B. Unpleasant weather helps you to put on weight.
C. Obese parents are not likely to have fat children.
D. Medicine for blood pressure helps you lose weight.
71. What would women prefer to do to have healthy children?
A. To have only one child.
B. To marry at an older age.
C. To marry a strong husband.
D. To give birth to a baby at younger age.

Education is not an end,but a means to an end.In other words,we do not educate children only for the purpose of educating them. Our purpose is to fit them for life.
In some modern countries it has for some time been fashionable to think that by free education for all—one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough. We find in such countries a far larger number of people with university degree. They refuse to do what they think “l(fā)ow” work, and, in fact, work with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries. But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor. We can live without education, but we die if we have no food.If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses,we should get terrible diseases in our towns.
In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life,it means that we must be educated in such a way that, firstly, each of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability and, secondly, that we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that is very bad to be ashamed of one’s work. Only such a type of education can be considered valuable to society.
64. The writer of the passage thinks that ______________ .
A. education can settle most of the world’s problems
B. free education for all probably leads to a perfect world
C. free education won’t help to solve problems
D. all the social problems can’t be solved by education
65. The writer wants to prove that _______________ .
A. our society needs all kinds of jobs
B. our society needs free education for all
C. a farmer is more important than a professor
D. people with university degrees earn more money
66. The purpose of education is _______________ .
A. to choose officials for the country
B. to prepare children mainly for their future life
C. to prepare children for well-paid jobs
D. to build a perfect world
67. According to the passage,_______________ .
A. work with hands is dirty and shameful
B. work with hands is low work
C. work with hands is the most important
D. we can’t regard work with hands as low work
