We live in central Phoenix, near the canal. Every day I used to see a homeless old man and his scruffy little dog hanging out down there.

I would tell my husband we should give him food for the little dog. It wouldn't have been a problem; we have our own "mini farm" of animals! But he would say "OK!" and then blow the idea off because of our business.

Being in Phoenix, Arizona, you can just imagine how hot it gets here, but his winter was really chilly! I had just come from KFC with take-out food for dinner. As I was turning by the canal, the man and his dog were sitting right there all bundled up. Even the doggy had a coat on! Not even thinking about it, I pulled into the parking lot along the canal and piled up a plate of chicken with al the fixings for the man and his little buddy. I gave it to him with a soda and a bottle of water for the little dog. He said, "Thank you, sweetie. You are an angel." And there were tears welling up in his eyes! I told him he ws so welcome, and then went home.

When my husband dug into the KFC gag he asked, "Were you hungry, or what?" I told him what I did and he said, "Only you!" Then he told me I had done a good thing.

A few weeks later, we were walking along the canal and found the man walking to me, with his little dog. He asked whether I would mind adopting the dog. With tears in eyes, he said it had gotten too hard for him to care for the dog. He added that he was planning on heading to Washington State but his dog wouldn't have been up to it, so he hoped to give it to me. "Only you! In this city, you are the only person I can believe in!"

Now, every time I watch and pat the puppy lying near the fireplace, I will recall the old man's words and wish him good luck.

Once a man asked a painter to painting a picture for him. He told the artist he didn't want to any shadows in the picture, just sunshine, but the artist did so. When the man saw the finished picture, he was disappointing. Without shadows, everything in the picture looks flat and unreal. Everyone knows there are many English expressions about clothes. If I keep talking, soon enough you will start to think I am an old hat about this -- a real expert. Do not be fooled, though. My friends sometimes call me a wolf in sheep’s clothing. 71

I’m not really a bad person. But I do love clothes. It is always fun to get dressed up. I look great in my best clothes. 72 In fact, my husband says I look dressed to kill. Of course, I would never kill anyone. But, there is something special about putting on clothes that are pleasing to the eye.

My favorite clothes are not modern or fashionable. 73 But I really do not care. Some of the clothes I like best are hand-me-downs. My older sister gave them to me when she no longer wanted them. Hand-me-downs are great because clothes often cost too much money. I live on a shoestring. I have a very small budget and little money to spend on clothes. 74 Maybe someday the shoe will be on the other foot. The opposite will be true. I will have a lot of money to buy clothes and my sister will get hand-me-downs from me.

I admit I dream of being rich. I dream that someday I will be able to live like a rich person. 75 Some of my friends got rich by riding someone else’s coat tails. They are successful today as a result of someone else being successful. But, I believe you should never criticize others for something you would do yourself. What is said about someone else can also be said about you. Remember, if the shoe fits, wear it.

  A. I will know what it is like to live a rich life.

  B. Maybe someday they will come into fashion.

  C. They certainly look worse on me than a birthday suit.

  D. However, my sister has a lot of money to spend on clothes.

  E. To be honest, I did not say anything without knowing the facts.

  F. This is someone who acts like a good person, but is really a bad person.

  G. You might say when I wear my favorite clothes; I am dressed to the teeth.

It turns out that nodding off in class may not be such a bad idea after all, as a new study has shown that going to sleep shortly after learning new material is the best way to remember it.

According to the leader of the study, Jessica Payne, a psychologist at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, nodding off after learning something new is like “telling” the sleeping brain what to keep.

Along with her colleagues, she studied 207 students who habitually slept for at least six hours per night. Participants were assigned without any regular pattern to study declarative (陳述性的), semantically (語(yǔ)義上) related or unrelated word pairs at 9 a.m. or 9 p.m., and returned for testing 30 minutes, 12 hours or 24 hours later.

Declarative memory refers to the ability to consciously remember facts and events, and can be broken down into memory for events and memory for facts about the world. People use both types of memory every day --- recalling where we parked today or learning how a colleague prefers to be addressed.

At the 12-hour retest, memory overall was better following a night of sleep compared to a day of wakefulness. At the 24-hour retest, with all participants having received both a full night of sleep and a full day of wakefulness, participants’ memories were better when sleep occurred shortly after learning, rather than following a full day of wakefulness.

“Our study confirms that sleeping directly after learning something new is beneficial for memory. What's new about this study is that we tried to shine light on sleep's influence on both types of declarative memory by studying semantically unrelated and related word pairs,” Payne said.

“Since we found that sleeping soon after learning benefited both types of memory, this means that it would be a good thing to go over any information you need to remember just before going to bed. In some sense, you may be “telling” the sleeping brain what to consolidate (鞏固).”

68. What can we learn about the study from the text?

       A. It was lead by an Indian psychologist in the USA.

       B. It was done by Jessica Payne and her colleagues.

       C. More than three hundred students took part in it.

       D. Participants were divided into groups according to a special pattern.

69. According to the text, declarative memory ______.

       A. can be divided into two types

       B. is rarely used in our daily life

       C. is unconscious but very useful

       D. may influence our sleep quality

70. What does the study want to show us?

       A. Why many students can’t stop themselves nodding off in class.

       B. How to remember information correctly.

       C. Sleeping directly after learning is good for our memory.

       D. We can still remember some information when we are sleeping.

A person who compares the annual earnings of college and high school graduates would no doubt conclude that higher education is a good investment—the present value of the college earnings premium (獎(jiǎng)金) (the better part of $1 million) seemingly far outdistances (超過(guò)) college costs. But for many, attending college is unequivocally (明確地) not the right decision on purely economic reasons.

First of all, college graduates on average are smarter and have better work habits than high school graduates. Those who graduated from college were better students in high school, for example. Thus, at least a portion of the earnings premium associated with college has nothing to do with college itself, but rather with other traits (特性).

Second, not everyone is average. A non-swimmer trying to cross a stream that on average is three feet deep might drown because part of the stream is seven feet in depth. The same kind of thing sometimes happens to college graduates too entranced (著迷的) by statistics on averages. Earnings vary considerably between the graduates of different schools, and within schools, earnings differ a great deal between majors. Majors of accounting, computer science, and engineering majors, for example, almost always make more than those majoring in education, social work, or ethnic studies.

Third, the number of new college graduates far exceeds (超過(guò)) the growth in the number of technical, managerial, and professional jobs where graduates traditionally have gravitated (趨向). As a consequence, we have a new phenomenon: underemployed college graduates doing jobs historically performed by those with much less education.

Does this mean no one should go to college? Of course not. First of all, college is more than training for a career, and many might benefit from the social aspects of advanced schooling.

As a general rule, I would say graduates in the top quarter of their class at a high-quality high school should go on to a four-year degree program, while those in the bottom quarter of their class at a high school with a mediocre educational reputation should not.

Those in between should consider perhaps doing a two-year program and then transferring to a four-year school. There are, of course, exceptions to this rule, but it is important for us to keep in mind that college is not for everyone.

64. If you only compare the earnings of college and high school graduates, you will conclude that ______.

      A. some students shouldn't go to college

      B. college education seems to bring a high rate of return

      C. attending college is not the right decision for the poor

      D. college education seems to be not so successful

65. From the second paragraph, we know that ______.

      A. college education is a must for young people

      B. the number of college graduates has been decreasing

      C. college graduates may get higher earnings because of many good traits

      D. it is certain that college students can get higher earnings

66. The writer mentions a non-swimmer crossing the stream to show ______.

      A. not all of the college graduates can get good earnings

      B. some of the college students can get well paid

      C. most of the college students can't get a good salary

      D. students in some majors are difficult to find jobs

67. Which of the following is true according to the writer?

      A. Society needs more high-quality college graduates.

      B. Most of the college graduates can find suitable jobs.

      C. Not all the students have to receive college education.

      D. We should reconsider the value of school education.

Most people only tap (發(fā)掘) a small part of their potential. You do what you CAN do, but are you doing what you COULD do? Most people do what they CAN do, but not what they COULD do. But there is a whole other world of possibilities out there that most of us don’t even let ourselves think about them.

The larger question we need to ask ourselves is: Can we reach a greater potential than we have ever imagined? In fact, if you stop and think about it, what could you do? I mean if you weren’t afraid of failing, or if you decided to stop coming up with reasons for not doing something, what COULD you actually accomplish?

As a psychotherapist (心理咨詢師) I was always interested in the stories that people told about themselves.

Joey Boring, a stockbroker worked in Edward Jones, was an average performer until he got a vision of what he COULD do. Within two years Joey became one of the top performers. In fact, during the global financial crisis, his performance was up by 43%. Why? Joey decided not to limit himself. He said, “I realized that I could do more than I had ever thought I could do”, and he did! During a time that could have easily been the worst financial period in his career, he chose to view it as an opportunity and began to focus his efforts on ways to better serve his existing customers.

A young friend of mine, Ashtyn Van, sprained (扭) her knee pretty badly. As a 14-year-old girl, she decided that she could tell herself that she was strong enough and good enough to do it. That day, she received the highest score at the state level competition. She could do more than she was doing.

I wonder what limits you are putting on yourself today. Perhaps we are only held back by our own limited thinking.

59. According to the text, what you COULD do are things that ______.

   A. you are not sure but may be successful in

   B. you have the ability to do

   C. you are able to deal with

   D. you have managed to do

60. Many people can’t realize a greater potential because they ______.

   A. haven’t drawn lessons from past failures

   B. are not good enough to succeed

   C. tend to find themselves excuses

   D. are realistic

61. But for his idea of what he COULD do, Joey, during the crisis, ______.

   A. might have been more successful

   B. might have made Edward Jones closed

   C. might have suffered losses

   D. might have lost his job

62. What does the author mean by giving the two examples?

   A. To sing the praises of the two.

   B. To say the two are really lucky dogs.

   C. To advise people to follow the two examples.

   D. To prove one’s potential is far bigger than he or she can imagine.

63. Which would be the best title for the text?

   A. God helps those who help themselves.

   B. Stop putting limits on yourself.

C. Are you going to take a risk?

D. Are you brave enough?
