Unbelievable view appealed to me by accident.Just then, I checked once again: the somewhat tiny wood was having a leaf.Could I trust my own eyes? Had the hot sun annoyed me? After all, it  as summer in Costa Rica, a country in Central America.
I left off, wiping sweat from my eyes. Then I moved the wood with my finger. It stopped. It looked up at me with big triangular eyes.Surprise! It was a mantid, a kind of insect, instead of a piece of wood.
The mantid was hanging upside down on a branch. Its wings made it look like a piece of tree bark. Then I noticed something else. The leaf wasn't a leaf at all.The hungry mantid was really eating another insect—a katydid.By now, all that was left of the katydid was a pair of wings.A few moments later, the wings dropped to the ground. The mantid folded its long legs.It sat still. Now it looked even more like a piece of wood than when I had first seen it.
I thought about how I had been fooled by these clever animals. Then I thought about how the two insects go about trying to trick each other. Both mantids and katydids are masters of make-up.Katydids are particularly good at it.Many look like something they are not.Katydids often look like plants. Many seem to be leaves.Others look like leaves of grass. All day, the bugs try to stay perfectly still.Because their bodies look like plants, most animals interested in killing them don't bother them while katydids eat plants.

A fad diet is a diet that suddenly becomes popular, usually because it promises people that they will lose a lot of weight overnight. Although dieters may really show weight loss from a fad diet, they will almost certainly get back the weight if their usual eating habits (習(xí)慣) remain unchanged. Worse yet, certain fad diets don't include nutrients(營養(yǎng))good for health. People have been known to become very ill as a result of following medically unhealthy diets.

Watson entered Mr Smith’s office. The Boss was a hard man. He fired people who didn’t do well without giving them a second chance.
“Watson,” said Mr Smith, “this past year your department hasn’t earned money. We’re going to drop that department. It’s finished. I’ m sorry, —but you’ll have to go.” “But, sir—if I just had a little more time. For the moment I need the job to keep my son at Riverside School.”
“What’s that!” said the Boss. “Riverside! I didn’t know you had a boy there. That’s an expensive school for a man with your salary.”
“1 know, sir. But he likes it there so much! He’s a star trackman(田徑運動員) and the best boxer in the school. The boys call him Champ(冠軍) there.”
The Boss sat perfectly still for a long time—a faraway (恍惚的) look in his eyes. Then, suddenly, he said, “We’ve got to close your department, Watson. But you’ll take over a new job in another department. It means longer hours—maybe more pay. Now get out. You’re here for life.”

They’ve got a good chemistry department here. And there’s one boy here who is really great. He’s a track star and boxing champ and just tops in chemistry. The boys call him Champ. He made them stop throwing my books around. And he knocked a boy down who hit me. He is the best friend I ever had. Dad, when I grow up, I want to do something for Champ. Something big—that he won’t even know about.
Your son,
Herbie

Most American students have to say goodbye to fancy (高檔的) fruits these days. In school restaurants across the country, cheaper fruits like apples and oranges have taken their place.
“People are afraid to spend now.” said Linda Morrow, who owns a shoe and handbag store. “They don’t know what the future will bring”. During the financial crisis (金融危機(jī)), several of the country’s biggest banks have been forced to sell or close. This has made lots of Americans afraid to buy expensive things.
The crisis began last year. Experts (專家) think it was because US banks lend money too easily. Last year a lot of people and companies, who borrowed money, found themselves unable to pay it back. This left the banks, as well as the people who put their money in the banks, without money. Since the banks borrowed money between themselves and even across borders (國界), the whole world was in trouble.
This month the US government agreed on a $700 billion plan to try to save the financial market. But no one is sure whether it will help or not. Last week presidents from 20 countries promised to work together to find a way out of the money trouble.
