Jerry is a popular manager of a restaurant. It was his attitude 1made the waiters follow him. He was a natural motivator (鼓舞人心的人). If a(n) 2was having a bad day, Jerry was always there, telling him/her how to look on the 3side of the situation.
This attitude really made me4, so one day I asked him, “I don’t get it! No one can be a positive person5. How can you manage it?”
“Every time something bad happens, I can choose to 6it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining and I can 7the positive side of life. Why don’t we just do that later?” Jerry said.
Jerry told me an unusual story out of his experience. One day he left the back door of his restaurant 8and was robbed by three men. While trying to open the safe, his hand, shaking from 9, slipped off the combination (開啟號(hào)碼的號(hào)碼組合). The robbers got angry and 10him.
11, Jerry was found quickly and taken to the hospital. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of care, Jerry 12with fragments (碎片) of the bullets (子彈) still in his body.
I saw Jerry about six months after the 13. I did ask him what had gone through his mind as the accident took place. “Did you lose consciousness? Weren’t you 14?” I asked.
“No,” Jerry said, “15when I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared.”
“A nurse asked if I was allergic (過敏的) to anything. ‘Yes’ I replied. The doctors and nurses stopped 16as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, ‘17!’”
“Over the laughter, I told them, ‘Please 18on me as if I am alive, not dead.’”
Jerry survived 19the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. Attitude, after all, is 20.

In this modern world, we rush around all day, doing things, talking, emailing, sending and reading messages. We are always on, always connected, always thinking, always talking. There is no 1 for stillness.
And when we are 2to be still because we’re in line for something, or waiting at a doctor’s appointment, or on a bus or train, we often 3something to do. Some will play with mobile devices, others will read something. Being still isn’t something we’re 4.
This comes at a 5: we lose that time for 6, for observing and listening. We lose peace.
And 7 yet: sometimes too much action is worse than no action at all. You can run around crazily, but get 8done.
Take a moment to think about 9 you spend your days. Are you constantly rushing around? Are you constantly reading and answering 10, checking on the news and the latest stream of information? Are you always 11through your schedule?
Is this how you want to spend your 12? If so, peace be with you. If not, take a moment to be 13. Don’t think about what you have to do, or what you’ve done already. 14be in the moment.
Then after a minute or two of doing that, consider your life, and how you’d 15 it to be. See your life with less movement, less doing, less rushing. See it with more stillness, more consideration, more 16.
Then be that vision.
It’s pretty simple: all you have to do is sit still for a little bit each day. 17you’ve gotten used to that, try doing less each day. Breathe when you feel yourself moving too18. Slow down. Be present. Find happiness now, in this moment, instead of 19 for it.
20 the stillness. It’s a treasure, and it’s available to us, always.

I was only eight years old when the Second World War ended, but I can still remember something about the1celebrations in the small town where I lived on the day when the war in Europe ended. We had not2much from the war where, though, like most children of my age, I often saw3houses in the streets and the very big4lorries(卡車) passing through. But both at home and at school I had become5to the phrases “before the war” and “when the war is over”. “Before the war”, obviously,6had been better, though I was too young to understand why,7there had been no bombs then, and people had eaten things like ice cream and bananas, which I had8heard of. When the war was over we would go back to London, but this meant very9to me. I did not remember what London was like.
What I remember now10V-Day(victory day) was the afternoon and the evening. Some boys and girls were collecting11and building an enormous bonfire(篝火). We stood and watched them for a time, and then I went home and12myself in with my key and waited for my parents to come back from work.
It was May and still broad13when my mother arrived, and my father came in about an hour later. After dinner I said I wanted to14the bonfire, so when it got dark my father took me to the end of the street. The bonfire was very15, and somehow people had collected some old clothes to16“Hitler” with the moustache(胡子) they had put on top of it. Just as we arrived, they set light to it. The flames17soon. Everyone was cheering and shouting.
I stood beside my father until the18started to go down, not knowing what to say. He said nothing, either. He had19in the First World War and remembered everything he had experienced. At last he said, “Well, that’s it, son. Let’s hope that this time it really will be the20one.”
