It was a normal summer night, humidity(潮濕)hung in the thick air. The only sound was my sister’s heavy1 from the bed next to me.
I couldn’t go to2, partly because of my cold and partly because of my3 for the next day. My mum had said that tomorrow was going to be a 4 .
Sweat stuck to my aching body. Finally, I gathered enough5 to sit up. I looked out of my small window into the night. There was a big bright6 hanging in the sky, giving off a magic glow.
My sister turned over as though she was as light as air. Why could she sleep soundly? Why wasn’t she7 too? Did she know about tomorrow?
I couldn’t stand the8 anymore, so I did what I always do to make myself feel better. I went to the9 and picked up my toothbrush and toothpaste. Pouring the red paste onto the brush, I cleaned back and forth, up and down.
Then I walked downstairs to look for some10of movement, some life. Gladiator, my cat,11 me as he meowed(貓叫)his sad song. He was on the old orange couch (長(zhǎng)沙發(fā)), sitting up on his front legs, 12something to happen. He looked at me as if to say, “I’m13, pet me. I need a good hug.” Even the couch begged me to sit on it.
In one movement I settled down onto the soft14. This couch represented my birth, my parents’ marriage, and hundreds of other little15.
As I held Gladiator, my heart started beating heavily. My mind was16 with questions: What’s life? Am I really alive? Are you listening to me? Every time I moved my hand down Gladiator’s body, I had a17 thought; each touch sang a different song.
I forgot all about the18 and the next day’s surprise. The 19 was so full of warmth and silence that I sank into its arms. Falling asleep with the big cat in my arms, I felt all my worries20 move away.

Homebuyers nationwide are watching housing prices go up, up, and up. “How high can they go ?” is the common question that1in the city is asking. But right now, few people seem to have the answer. “2interest rates(利率) stay at about3percent, there’s no way of knowing,”, said a local Guangzhou economist.
“It’s crazy,” said Li Hua, who is4a house near the river. “In 1993, I bought my first place, a two-bedroom apartment in Haizhu district, for 100,000 yuan. My friends thought that I was overpaying and said it just wasn’t worth it. Five years later , I had to move to Shenzhen. I49 it for 160,000 yuan, which was nice profit. Last year, while5friends here, I saw in the local paper that exact same6was for sale for 450,000 yuan!”
It is a seller’s7. Homebuyers feel like they have to offer at least8percent more than the asking price just to have a chance. Li Hua says the situation is really diffcult. “Whether you decide to buy or decide not to buy, you still feel like you made the9decision. If you buy, you feel like you overpaid. If you don’t buy, you want to kick yourself for passing up a great10.”
Everyone says prices must fall, but everyone hopes it will happen the day after they sell their house.55 government officials have no idea what the future will bring. “All we can say is that these things change,” said the state director of housing. “What goes up must come down.”

Finally, I asked, “What was that all about?” “7.” He said, “My teacher said we should tell our parents that we love them and see what they say. It’s an experiment. ”
The next day I8his teacher at my office to find out more about this “experiment” and how the other parents had responded .
9, most of the fathers had the same reaction as you did.” The teacher said, “When I first10we try this, I asked the children what they thought their parents would say. Some of them thought their parents would have heart trouble. The point is,” the teacher explained, “feeling11is an important part of12. It’s something all human beings13. What I’m trying to tell the children is that it’s too14that we don’t express those feelings. A boy should be able to tell his dad that he loves him. ”
The teacher, a middle-aged man, understands how difficult it is for some of us to say the things that would be good for us to say.
When my son came to me15, I held on to him for an extra second. And just16he pulled away, I said in my deepest, most manly voice, “Hey, I love you. ”
I didn’t know if saying that would make17of us healthier, but we did feel pretty18. Maybe19time when one of my children says “I love you”, it would not take me a whole20to think of the right answer.

I remember my dad teaching me the power of language at a very young age.
One fairly interesting event happened when I was eight. As a kid, I was always climbing trees, poles, and 1 around upside down from the rafters (房梁) of our house. So, it 2 to no surprise for my dad to 3 me at the top of a 30-foot tree swinging back and forth. Without realizing the tree could break or I could get 4, I just thought it was5 to be up so high.
My cousin, Tammy, was in the same tree. She was hanging on the first big 6 about ten feet below me. Tammy’s mother also 7 us at the exact time my dad did. About that time a huge gust of wind came over the tree and I could feel the tree begin to sway. I remembered my dad’s 8 over the wind yelling, “Bart, 9 on tightly.” So I did.
The next thing I know, I heard Tammy 10 at the top of her lungs, 11 flat on the ground. She had fallen out of the tree.
I came down the tree to 12. My dad later told me why Tammy fell and I didn’t. 13, when Tammy’s mother felt the wind, she yelled out, “Tammy, don’t 14!” And Tammy did do that.
My dad then 15 to me that the mind has a very 16 time dealing with a negative image. In order to deal with the 17 of not falling, Tammy’s brain had to first imagine falling, and then tell the brain not to do what it just imagined. However, my eight-year-old brain 18 had an internal image of hanging on tightly.
This “Self-Talk” is especially useful when you are 19 to break a habit or set a goal. You can’t imagine not doing something in your mind. The only way to accomplish it is to find a word for what you want to do.
I’m now a pretty good football player, because all my internal dialogue is 20 and encourages me to win. All this I owe to my dad.

I was reading a notice at the entrance to my college dormitory, when a girl came up to me and said, “Do you 1 a quarter? I’m one short of putting my laundry(剛洗好的衣物) in the dryer(烘干機(jī)). ”
I 2 to think about it for a few seconds and considered whether I’d be 3 to give a quarter away. I found myself 4 her, thinking about why she didn’t 5 four quarters down from her room with her, as if she had 6 to be one short so she could ask someone else for it. (Later I knew 7 that was not the case.)
But I didn’t have any reason to 8her. Then I responded, “Yeah, I think I have the only one,” though fully 9 that I had three. “Here you go,” I said with a smile. “Thanks,” she responded, 10 that she could have clean clothes to wear the next morning.
A few moments later the girl 11 and gave a dollar bill to me. “Why are you giving this to me?” I asked, 12. “Oh, because you were kind to me, so I’m just giving back the 13.”
It’s just a dollar, but I felt it was 14. More so because I hadn’t given that quarter with such nice 15, the way she gave that dollar to me. I felt like it was the first time I ever 16 something greater in return for something so17 that I had given. I saw the power of kindness and generosity in a 18way.
I thought it was so worth giving that quarter away. Giving and 19 don’t usually happen hand-in-hand, 20 when it does, like it did this time, it makes one think about why generosity is so powerful in the first place.
