  Mrs.Harriet Beecher Stowe, who was born in 1811, was not literary(文學(xué))genius author like Charles Dickens, who did much to end terrible conditions in workhouse(濟(jì)貧院)he described so well at the beginning of Oliver Twist.Yet one of her books not only made her famous, but has been described as one that stirred the world, and played a part in bringing on a civil war and freeing the enslaved race.The civil war was the American Civil War of 1861, in which the Northern States fought the Southern State and finally won.The Southern states were the slave-owning states, and the matter of slavery was one of the quarrels between the two sides.
