1had been put out put out 撲滅,熄滅。 根據(jù)時(shí)間狀語(yǔ)by the time we got there, “到達(dá)”和 “撲滅”兩個(gè)動(dòng)作有先有后,在先的那個(gè)用過(guò)去完成時(shí)。

2take in 考查固定短語(yǔ),take in 吸收,讓進(jìn)入。

當(dāng)時(shí)間狀語(yǔ)從句中的主語(yǔ)跟主句的主語(yǔ)一致或者是it,并且謂語(yǔ)是be的時(shí)候,從句主語(yǔ)和be可以省略,此句補(bǔ)充完整應(yīng)為While she was making great efforts to run away, she fell off the horse and died.

4in all in all 總共,總計(jì)。

5In a nutshell in a nutshell 簡(jiǎn)而言之。

6look through look through此處作“瀏覽”講。

7end up 考查固定短語(yǔ)end up doing 以…

8On average 根據(jù)about 15 times a day可以判斷,用on average 。

9set fire to/ had set fire to set fire to 縱火。

10give out give out 發(fā)出,放出。

With busy lives, it can be hard to find time to volunteer. However, the benefits of volunteering are great to you, your family, and your community(社區(qū)).

One of the better-known benefits of volunteering is the effect on the community. Volunteering allows you to connect with your community and make it a better place. Volunteering also strengthens your ties to the community and broadens your support network, exposing(使暴露) you to people with common interests, neighborhood resources, and fun and satisfactory activities.

While some people are naturally outgoing, others are shy and have a hard time meeting new people. Volunteering gives you the opportunity to practice and develop your social skills, since you are meeting regularly with a group of people with common interests. Once you have the desire, it’s easier to make more friends and contacts.

Volunteering provides many benefits for both mental and physical health. You’re doing good to others and the community, which makes you experience the pleasure of success. Your role as a volunteer can also give you a sense of pride and identity.

Reducing the risk of depression(沮喪) is another important benefit of volunteering. A key risk factor for depression is social isolation. Volunteering keeps you in regular contact with others and helps you develop a solid support system, which in turn protects you against stress and depression when you’re going through challenging times. Volunteering is good for your health whether you are young or old, but it’s especially good in older adults.

Volunteering offers you the chance to try out a new career without making a long-term commitment. It is also a great way to gain experience in a new field. Volunteering work can expose you to professional organizations or internship(實(shí)習(xí))that could be of benefit to your career. That volunteer work is unpaid doesn’t mean the skills you learn are basic. Many volunteering opportunities provide training. In addition, volunteering can also help you build upon skills you already have and use them to benefit the greater community.

Volunteering is a fun and easy way to explore your interests and passions. Volunteer opportunities that match both your goals and your interest are most likely to be fun and satisfying for you. Doing volunteer work you find meaningful and interesting can be a relaxing escape from your day-to-day routines of work, school, and family commitments. Volunteering also provides you with renewed creativity, motivation, and vision that can be carried over into your personal and professional life.

Before your child's final exam: and the graduation announcements, you face a significant task together: choosing the right college or university. There is no "one size fits all" approach to selecting a college—it's a very personal process for most teenagers. Consider a wide range of factors to help your child make the best possible choice.

Discuss with your child her post-high school choices, such as college, finding work or starting a business, or joining the army. If you determine together that college is the best choice for your child, talk about the importance of college, and her longer-term goals by going to college.

Talk to your child about what she thinks is important in a college experience and share your opinions as well. Identify the issues that will directly impact her college choice, such as her grades, test scores and family finances. Then make a list of the key criteria for her dream school, including factors such as the school's location, its size, the types of prograM:, the after school activities available and the type of financial aid available.

Prioritize the item: on your child's list, at least to the extent of sorting it into "must-haves," "highly desirable" and "nice-to-have" categories. Put these factors into an online search engine specifically designed to identify colleges and universities that best meet your criteria, such as that offered by CollegeBoard.org. Start with the most important criteria, then experiment with additional factors to narrow the search results to a number you can work with, such as 10 or 20 different schools.

Use the search results as a guide to further focus your college search. Research each school by reviewing its website, requesting information directly from the school and attending local presentations about the school.

A. list in order of importance B. write down

C. add to D. do research into

2What can we learn from the passage?

B. It's necessary to take your child's opinion into consideration.

D. An online search engine is of great help to you.

3What's the author's purpose of writing the passage?

A. To argue B. To persuade

C. To introduce D. To amuse

I can still remember clearly the day after I had my first exam. I didn’t pass them. I was so scaring that I even don’t want to go to school any more. My parents looked at my test paper and said. “My children, we’re very glad you has finished half of it. You can do better next time. We never expect you to do the best at a very beginning. We hope you can make progress gradual.” What they said made me to feel I could do things well.

From then, I concentrated more on my studies. Now I’m always filling with confidence in my studies because I know my parents are always behind me.
