【題目】(題文)I began cycling in 2004 when I was a poor student. It was dangerous, sure, but cycling is the fastest, cheapest point-to-point form of transport in Melbourne. I own a car now, but that’s just for transporting the baby or groceries.

I hate driving. So it’s been quite encouraging watching the growth in cyclist numbers over the past decade. It is estimated that 10,000-plus cyclists enter the CBD (Central Business District) each day, taking pressure off public transport. But as more people take to cycling as a mode of transport, the number of cyclists seriously injured or killed keeps climbing. And that is a sign that our infrastructure (基礎(chǔ)設(shè)施) is still not good enough.

Melbourne was once a dream for cyclists-flat, long, wide roads, with plenty of paths along rivers. Now, cycling can be deadly, with roads dominated by cars. I have a friend who broke her back and was lucky to escape paralysis, and others with broken bones. In my time riding, I’ve been forced off the road by a truck, cut off by four-wheel drives, and told to get off the road.

These things don’t exactly happen to trams and buses, those other slow coaches on Melbourne’s roads. No—drivers reserve a particular savagery (殘暴行為) for cyclists. And that’s a sign of exactly one thing: inadequate infrastructure.

We shouldn’t need to be taught how to coexist in the same narrow space. Drivers and cyclists should be kept apart. The present debate over how to minimize “dooring” is a distraction.

Dooring is not a legal problem. You cannot legislate (制定法律) it away. Designing bike paths so riders are channelled between moving cars and parked cars is deadly. All it takes is one daydreaming driver to fling open the door and you are gone. That’s what happened to the young university student James Cross.

This year, there are to be new anti-dooring lanes (車道) built on Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn, where Cross died in 2010. But these lanes are not safe. Cyclists must still pass between two rows of cars.

【題目】 Why are some people so successful in reaching their goals? Research on achievement suggests that successful people reach their goals not simply because of who they are, but more of ten because of what they do. 1

2 “Lose 5 pounds” is a better goal than “l(fā)ose some weight”, because it gives you a clear idea of what success looks like. Knowing exactly what you want to achieve keeps you motivated until you get there. Also, think about the specific actions that need to be taken to reach your goal. Just promising you’ll “sleep more” is too vague—be clear and precise. “I’ll be in bed by 10pm on weeknights” leaves no room for doubt about what you ought to do.

Meanwhile, you should think positively about achieving your goal. Believing in your ability to succeed is particularly helpful for creating your motivation. 3 Studies show that thinking things will come to you easily and effortlessly leaves you ill-prepared for the journey ahead, and significantly increases the possibility of failure.

4 You may take on a challenge that requires you to do something you’d honestly rather not do, such as giving up high-fat snacks, or doing 100 sit-ups a day, which will develop your determination to reach your goals. You may start with just one activity, and make a plan for how you will deal with troubles when they occur. 5

A. So just look forward confidently and carry on courageously.

B. But whatever you do, don’t ignore the difficulty in reaching your goal.

C. As your strength grows, you can take on more challenges.

D. Here are some ways successful people achieve their goals.

E. Making a plan for reaching your goals takes patience.

F. When you set yourself a goal, try to be as specific as possible.

G. Willpower is another important factor.

Each comment made my face shrink and wrinkle harder like cucumber (黃瓜) 4 had spent weeks of abandonment in the refrigerator. Evelyn had finished 5 (buy) all she wanted to buy but was still directing me when this little girl caught her eye.

She 6 (dress) in dirty clothes and stood confidently eating her bread slowly and carefully. “What is your name?” “My name is Saidat,” she 7 (respond). Saidat was five years old, she was smart, and had very little fear. She told 8 (we) of how she lost parents in the explosion in the market over a week ago, and since then she had been crawling from beneath one market table 9 another.

Evelyn and I were drawn to Saidat and we decided to take her home with us. 10 was difficult to predict what our parents’ reaction to Saidat would be, but this little girl was fearless-she encouraged us to be too.
