Next autumn when you see wild geese heading south for the winter flying in a V formation, you might think about what scientists have discovered as to why they fly that way.
As each bird flaps its wings, it creates uplift(提升) for the bird immediately following. By flying in a V formation the whole group adds at least 71% greater flying range than if each bird flies on its own.
People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more quickly and easily because they are traveling on the push of one another.
When a wild goose falls out of the formation,it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go alone and quickly tries to get back into the formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front. When the head goose gets tired,it flies back into the formation and another goose flies to the front. It is wise to take turns doing difficult jobs whether it is people or wild geese flying south.
Wild geese honk (發(fā)出雁叫聲) from behind to inspire those up front to keep up their speed. What can we learn from this?
When a wild goose gets sick or wounded by gunshots, and falls out of the formation, two other geese will fall out with that goose and follow it down to lend help and protection. They will stay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly or until it dies, and only then will they go on with their own or with another formation to catch up with their group.
1.Wild geese fly in a V formation in order to________.
A. protect themselves from danger
B. fly more quickly and easily
C. help the sick and wounded
D. fly much higher in the sky
2.What can we learn from the fifth paragraph?
A. We should try to lead others to move forward.
B. We should give people facing difficulties encouragement.
C. We should believe in those who offer us help.
D. We should care more about the old and sick.
3.When a wild goose becomes sick or is wounded,________.
A. it will be left alone and will fall on the ground
B. the whole group will stop flying
C. two other geese will stay with it to offer help
D. other geese will honk to give it encouragement
4.What do we know from the passage?
A. A wild goose can help the one following it by flapping its wings.
B. A person who works alone can work better than one who doesn’t.
C. It is not good for wild geese to take turns being the head goose.
D. The wild geese that fall behind are unlikely to catch up with their group.

As is known to all, nowadays many students are interested in studying abroad.
Attending schools abroad has many advantages. First, by looking at our own country from outside, we can best see the strong points and weak points of our nation and therefore widen our vision and broaden our minds. Second, while studying in a foreign country, we can travel widely, visiting famous scenic spots and making friends with the local people. Third, we can use the foreign language in our daily life so that our ability in that language may be improved quickly. But the most important is to learn advanced science and technology. For all these advantages, it is really worthwhile to go abroad for education.
However, as everything has two sides, there are also some disadvantages in attending a foreign university. The most serious problem is the language barrier (障礙). Most of the students who are ready to go abroad do not prepare themselves well for the new language environment. As a result, on arriving there, they will find it difficult to understand what the instructors are saying in class. Besides, for not knowing about the customs and way of life of the local people, they may run into trouble in dealing with various situations. Therefore, misunderstandings often arise. Furthermore, the cost of living is much higher than that in our country, so most students have to find part-time jobs in order to help support themselves. Faced with these difficulties, many students find themselves unable to pay full attention to their studies and some students may even fail in their courses and learn little.
Therefore, given an opportunity to attend a school abroad, one must consider the factors carefully before making up his mind. On the one hand, it is a good thing to go and study abroad. But on the other hand, one must not neglect (忽視) the disadvantages.
1.According to the passage, the following are all advantages of studying abroad EXCEPT .
A. having more chances to get good jobs
B. improving foreign language ability quickly
C. visiting well-known scenic spots
D. learning advanced science and technology
2.The underlined word “instructors” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to .
A. neighbors B. teachers
C. strangers D. classmates
3.Why do some students find part-time jobs?

B. Because they want to make full use of their spare time.
C. Because they are not interested in studying.
D. Because they have to support themselves.
4.The passage mainly tells us that .
A. studying abroad is a good way to learn advanced science and technology
B. everything has two sides
C. people should think twice before going abroad
D. going abroad has more advantages than disadvantages

Every one of us can make a great effort to cut off the use of energies in our country. To begin with, all of us can start reducing to the use of oil by driving only when we have a real need. That won’t be easy,I know, but we have to start anywhere. What’s more,we can go to work by bike once and twice a week, and we can also buy small cars that burn less oil.Other way is to watch our everyday use of water and electric at home. For example, how many times have you walked out of a room and leave the lights or television when no one else was there?

I am a working woman with a secret life: I keep house. An off-an-on lawyer and professor in public,in private I launder and clean, cook and devote serious time and energy to a domestic(家務(wù)的)routine, not so different from my grandmothers did as "housewives."When I want a good read,I reach for my collection of old housekeeping handbooks.I enjoy housekeeping and the comforts it provides.
I have almost entirely hidden this passion for housekeeping though I am writing a long story about it.No one meeting me for the first time would doubt that I spend my time knitting and remembering household facts.I knew I would not want this information about me to get around. After all,I belong to the first generation of the women who worked more than they stayed home.
Being viewed as over domestic can get you socially ostracized. When I made hand-rolled pasta(意大利面)for a dinner,I learned the hard way that some guests will find this annoying,as they do not feel comfortable eating a meal that they regard as the product of too much trouble. When my son was in nursery school,I made the mistake of spending a few hours sewing for him a Halloween dressing, receiving hard stares of many fellow parents who had bought a Batman or Esmeralda costume. Many times my courage in writing the story failed me when painful silences followed my confession(坦白)about the long book,"NO,not a history of housework,an explanation of it—a practical book on how you make the bed and make a comfortable home."I managed to hold on partly because not everyone responded with that stare;there was support as well. And I was struck that no one responded with coldness. The topic was clearly hot-too hot for some people to handle, heartwarming to others.
1.What makes the author enjoy housekeeping?
A. The joy and comfort from housekeeping.
B. Her wish to be different from others.
C. The influence of her grandmothers.
D. Her love to her family.
2.Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word in Paragraph 3?
A. Interested. B. Rejected.
C. Accepted. D. Concerned.
3.We can learn that the author .
A. gives up writing her story at times B. does housekeeping as her full job
C. receives some unfair treats D. thinks her book useful to all

There is plenty of complaints about how social media-texting in particular—may be harming children’s social development. But a new study suggests that constant instant messaging(IM’ing) and texting among teens may also provide benefits, particularly for those who are introverted(內(nèi)向的).
British researchers studied instant messages exchanged by 231 teens. The researchers analyzed 150 conversations in the study. In 100 of these chats, the study participant began IM’ing while in a negative emotional state such as sadness or anger. The rest were conversations begun when the participant was feeling good or neutral(中立的). After the chat, participants reported about a 20% reduction in their distress—not enough to completely eliminate it, but enough to leave them feeling better than they had before reaching out.
"Our findings suggest that IM’ing between distressed adolescents and their peers may provide emotional relief and consequently contribute to their well-being," the authors write, noting that previous research has shown that people assigned to talk to a stranger either in real life or online improved their mood in both settings, but even more with IM. And people who talk with their real-life friends online also report feeling closer to them than those who just communicate face-to-face, implying a strengthening of their bond.
Why would digital communication trump human contact? The reasons may have something to do with the fact that users can control expression of sadness and other emotions via IM without revealing emotional elements like tears that some may consider as embarrassing. Studies also show that the anonymity(匿名) of writing on a device blankets the users in a sense of safety. Previous research has shown that expressive writing itself can "vent" emotions and provide a sense of relief—and doing so, knowing that your words are reaching a sympathetic friend, may provide even more comfort and potentially be helpful. This is what the Internet offers: the change to connect—but in measured doses(劑量) and from behind a screen.
1.What can we learn from the passage?
A. Teens are more likely to send instant messages when feeling upset.
B. Instant messaging can help completely remove teens’ negative emotions.
C. Chat via instant messaging services makes participants feel happy.
D. Constant instant messaging can help teens value their negative emotions.
2.The underlined word “vent” in paragraph 4 most probably means ________.
A. develop B. maintain
C. release D. hide
3.What does the digital communication enable users to do?
A. Find more sympathetic friends.
B. Share and discuss more information.
C. Produce more expressive writings.
D. Avoid embarrassment and discomfort.
4.What can be concluded from the new study by British researchers?
A. American teens are extensive instant messaging users.
B. Instant messaging will prevent children’s social development.
C. Introverted teens may benefit from constant instant messaging.
D. Teens feeling bad often feel closer to real-life friends than to the net friends.
