Many people go to school for a good education. They learn languages, history, maths and other lessons. School education is very important and useful. Yet no one can learn everything from school. No matter how much a teacher knows, he cannot teach his students everything they want to know. His work is to show his students how to learn. He teaches them how to read and how to think. So, much more is to be learned outside school by the students themselves. It is always more important to know how to study by oneself. It is quite easy to learn something in a language or a formula(公式) in maths, but it is difficult to use a formula in finding the answer to a maths problem . Great inventors do not get everything from school but they can invent many things and change the world a lot. Though Thomas Edison invented many things he didn’t have much school education. How do they do all these? Because they know how to study. A lot of things are not taught in the classroom. They get knowledge from books outside school. When it comes to cultural heritage protection, the Grand Canal of China is probably the world’s greatest project of its kind. The big inland waterway system in the north-eastern and central eastern plains passes through eight of the country’s present-day provinces.

The Canal runs from Beijing in the north to Zhejiang Province in the south. Constructed in sections from the 5th century BC onwards, it was designed as a means of communication in the 7th century AD. The Canal is the world’s greatest civil engineering project before the Industrial Revolution.

The Grand Canal reached a peak in the 13th century, providing an inland navigation(航行) network consisting of more than 2,000 kilometers of artificial waterways, linking five of the most important river basins in China, including the Yellow River and the Yangtze. It entered a bid as a UNESCO(聯(lián)合國教科文組織) cultural heritage site in 2008.

The Grand Canal cultural square is located in Beijing’s Tongzhou district. Ever since the Yuan dynasty 800 years ago, the Tongzhou section of the Grand Canal has been the life blood of Beijing. Grain and building materials were all transported to meet the endless demands of the big cities. Even today, the Grand Canal plays a major role in the lives of its citizens.

"I grew up near the Grand Canal. In the past the waterway was a lot narrower, but now it’s nice and wide and bridges are built over it. I think if the bid for world heritage status succeeds, it will greatly make Tongzhou more famous in the world, especially with Tongzhou aiming to be a sub-center of the capital Beijing," a citizen said.

The result of the bid is set to be released next week, and no doubt it will certainly make it into the history books if the Canal is listed as a world heritage site.

1.It can be concluded from the passage that ________ .

A. The bid’s result of the Canal will be announced soon

B. the Canal is the UNESCO’s newest world heritage site

C. the Canal is to connect Tongzhou with Zhejiang Province

D. the Canal will be a bid for a UNESCO cultural heritage site

2.The Grand Canal was in the most glorious time ________ .

A. when it was aimed as a means of communication

B. when it crossed the Yellow River and the Yangtze

C. when it was born about six hundred years later

D. when it was designed as an artificial waterway

3.What can we infer by reading the passage?

A. Tongzhou used to be the capital of the Yuan dynasty.

B. Most citizens living in Tongzhou depend on the Canal.

C. Tongzhou will benefit if the Canal is made a heritage site.

D. Some citizens think the Canal not to be a cultural heritage item.

科目:高中英語 來源:2015-2016學年湖南衡陽八中高一下學期一次月考英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

If drinking coffee or tea has become part of your daily routine, you might wonder what it's doing to your long-term heart health. New research from Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology, a journal (期刊)of the American Heart Association, found that high tea consumption and proper coffee consumption may be associated with decreased rates of death from coronary heart disease ( CHD)(冠心病).

The study followed more than 37,000 tea and coffee drinkers over 13 years. Participants completed food recalls to document their typical intake of tea and coffee, and were divided into groups that ranged from light to heavy consumption. Researchers accounted for variables(變量)such as health histories, height, weight, and waist circumference (腰圍)and recorded the number of deaths from cardiovascular (心血管的)disease and stroke during the study period.

Overall results showed that consuming more than six cups of tea per day was associated with a 36% lower risk of death from heart disease compared to consuming less than one cup of tea per day. There appeared to be no such protective effect of tea-drinking at any amount for risk of death from stroke. Among coffee drinkers, more proper consumption levels (2-3 cups per day) were associated with the greatest risk reduction for death from heart disease (21% ) compared to drinking less than one cup of coffee per day.

Researchers acknowledged certain inconclusive variables within their findings. For example, the difference between decaffeinated(去咖啡因的)and regular coffee could not be accurately accounted for, nor could specific recommendations be made for type of tea, though due to its popularity in the Netherlands where the study took place, researchers assumed most tea consumption to be black tea.

Furthermore, researchers found that tea and coffee drinkers had opposite lifestyles, with tea drinkers tending to engage in healthy lifestyle habits and coffee drinkers being more likely to eat less healthy and smoke. It was difficult to say with certainty what impact these other lifestyle variables may have contributed to the overall results.

1.What's the conclusion of the study?

A. People should drink tea and coffee as much as possible.

B. Drinking more tea may benefit people with CHD.

C. High tea consumption may reduce the rate of stroke.

D. Coffee consumption has nothing to do with heart disease.

2.Which of the following variables haven’t been considered?

A. Health histories. B. Height and weight.

C. Waist circumference. D. The type of tea and coffee.

3.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A. All people in the Netherlands like black tea.

B. Tea and coffee drinkers had a similar life style,

C. Other variables have no effect on the results.

D. There are still something uncertain about the study.

4.Which of the following might be the best title?

A. Why our heart loves coffee and tea.

B. Drink more tea and coffee.

C. Heart disease will be reduced.

D. An amazing findings about heart diseases.
