【題目】In 1996 John Jones made an unusual discovery. He had just enlarged (擴大) a piece of paper money for a friend—a Confederate bank note, money issued (發(fā)行) by banks in Southern States of America during the Civil War. When he was face to face with the picture, he couldn’t believe his eyes: slaves (奴隸) happily picking cotton in their master’s fields.

Jones grew up in South Carolina. He had heard painful stories of slavery from his greatgrandmother. The picture on the money did not match (匹配) the history of African American slaves that he’d heard all his life. “I had never seen that type of picture on money before,” he said.

Jones wondered why slaves looked so happy. He started doing research.

Searching for and finding the answers to his questions changed his life. During two years’ search, Jones found more than 120 different bills. He discovered that the bills had several things in common. They showed slaves working in jobs related to farming. Many of them showed healthy and smiling slaves at work. None of the bills showed the hardships of slavery.

Jones wanted to share what he had learned. “I wanted other people to see what I had seen,” he said. He decided to make large paintings of the pictures on the money. After three years of work, Jones had painted more than 80 slavery scenes (場景).He paired each painting with the money on which the picture appeared. “The Color of Money”—an exhibit (展覽) of his work—has toured the country.

Jones' paintings tell an important story about the South 150 years ago. He likes to repeat the saying. “The story is on the money.” In this case, the saying happens to be true.

3What did Jones find?

A. About 120 different bills were issued during the Civil War.

B. The difficulty of slaves was never shown on the bills.

C. Slaves lived a harder life than he thought.

D. Slaves worked long hours on farms.

4What’s the best title for the text?

A. Confederate Money. B. Money Tells a Story.

C. African American Slaves. D. John Jones Changes America.

The Misery of Shyness

Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. All kinds of people describe themselves as shy: short, tall, dull, intelligent, young, old, slim, and overweight. 1They are excessively concerned about their own appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly swirling in their minds: What kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? I'm ugly. I'm wearing unattractive clothes.

2A person's self-concept is reflected in the way he or she behaves and the way a person behaves affects other people's reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a profound effect on all areas of their lives. For instance, people who have a positive sense of self-worth or high self-esteem usually act with confidence. Because they have self-assurance, they do not need constant praise and encouragement from others to feel good about themselves. Self-confident people are their own best friends. They participate in life enthusiastically and spontaneously.3People with high self-esteem are not hurt by criticism; they do not regard criticism as personal rejection. Instead, they view criticism as suggestion for improvement.

In contrast, shy people, having low self-esteem, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need reassurance that they are doing "the right thing". Shy people are very sensitive to criticism.4They also find it difficult to be pleased by compliment because they believe they are unworthy of praise. A shy people may respond to a compliment with a statement like this one: "You're just saying that to make me feel good. I know it's not true".

Can shyness be completely eliminated, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determined and patient effort in building self-confidence.5

A. It is clear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is detrimental, or harmful.

B. They are not affected by what others think they "should" do.

C. It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must affect people adversely.

D. They feel it confirms their inferiority.

E. It is not fair for them to label themselves as inferior because they have difficulty in some areas.

F. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious.

G. Since shyness goes hand in hand with lack of self-esteem, it is important for people to accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths.

【題目】Lunch hours are getting shorter and shorter , and even disappearing in some parts of today’s working world . With fewer employees but more tasks to be accomplished in a day , many Americans treat lunch not as a break but as just another task to squeeze into an already over-booked day . But do quick meals at the desk actually improve productivity over more leisurely meals ? According to the latest study published in the journal PLOS ONE , they could help you get more done .

The researchers only studied 32 employees , so the findings are arguable . But when they assigned one group to eat at their desks and the other to dine with a colleague at a restaurant , they found that those who ate lunch together showed a decline in their performance on tests that measured concentration , memory and the ability to catch errors and read emotions in facial expression following lunch than before lunch . Both groups ate the same meals , but those who ate alone were only given 20 minutes to consume their food , while the paired participants were allowed one hour in the restaurant . Those who ate alone did not have as large a drop in their cognitive(認知)processing as those who ate in the restaurant .

There were too many factors at play to determine which had the strongest influence on cognitive control . Whatever factor was responsible , however , the group that took a restaurant lunch break came back more relaxed , say the author , and that likely affected their cognitive sharpness Sharing a meal outside the office with a friend appears to have a calming effect , and while it reduces intellectual skills , it could foster social harmony and teamwork , which may be an important feature of some work tasks .

But don’t feel sorry for the lone lunchers . It turns out that since they were able to maintain their cognitive skills following the meal , they might be in a better position to think creatively for projects that require more solutions or approaches .

1What can we learn about the research ?

A. Its findings are unlikely to raise argument .

B. Both groups were given one hour for lunch .

C. The employees having lunch together performed worse in all aspects .

D. The cognitive skills of the group eating alone declined less than the other .

2Sharing a meal with a friend can help __________ .

A. enhance the cognitive sharpness B. improve harmonious teamwork

C. finish all the work afterwards D. maintain the intellectual skills

3What task does the author think is more suitable for those dining alone ?

A. The task requiring cooperation . B. The task requiring calming effect .
