We always celebrated my Dad’s November birthday on Thanksgiving Day, even after he entered a nursing home. As years went on, these events took on a(n) meaning – a traditional birthday party for Dad, and a personal for all that he had done for me in my life.

When we knew that it might be Dad’s birthday, the whole family decided to come together for a huge birthday celebration at the nursing home. It was a crowded party ___all of us sitting around him. Dad was a wonderful , and here was a biggest audience he’d ever had.

During a quiet moment, I announced that it was now Dad’s turn to stories from us. I wanted everyone to tell Dad what we loved about him. , we told stories from our hearts, Dad listened with wet, flashing blue eyes. We all kinds of lost memories – stories about when we were little, stories about when Dad was young and stories that are shared as family . Even the littlest grandchildren couldn’t to tell their grandfather why they loved him. For a man who had been kind to so many people in his life, here was our to honor him.

A few months later, at Dad’s memorial service, we fully realized what we had given Dad that night. Those were the stories people normally tell at a . They are told, then, full of tears, with the hope that the departed will somehow hear the outpouring of love.__ we had given those loving to Dad when he was , told through laughter, accompanied by hugs and joy. I’m sure the stories and memories over in his mind during his last months and days.

Words do , and they are enough. We need to say them, to speak them to the ones we love, for everyone else to hear. That’s the way to love, and our chance to honor a person in life.

Getting along with parents

Mom and dad are the most important people in your life, and they’re likely to influence you more than anyone else in your lifetime. Spend time together. It might be easy to be physically in the same place with your mom and dad. 2. Instead of playing a computer game or watching TV by yourself, maybe you should ask your mom and dad to play with you. You can go outside together, try a board game, or read a book together.

Be kind. Little things might mean a lot to your mom and dad. 4.It’s also lovely when a kid offers to help fold the laundry or cleans up his or her room without being asked. And if you try not to fight with your brothers or sisters, your parents might be so excited!

As living conditions in China are getting better, parents who want their children to have a bright future invest large sums of money to send their children to study abroad. However, there are countless difficulties that students have to face and solve when they study abroad. Therefore, it is necessary for Chinese overseas students to be aware of certain things to which they must pay attention.

1._________ Safety issues before and after studying abroad have been one of the focuses of parents. However, all experts consider psychological preparation as the most important thing for students studying abroad to consider. They believe that students must have a clear picture of their position and know that they are going abroad to study and receive training and not for leisure. And they should not have the opinion that everything abroad is good and all things from China are bad. Students should prepare themselves for the differences.

2.__________ Chinese students have got accustomed to the domestic exam-oriented education style that is completely different from the more open foreign education mode. They will face changes in the educational system while studying abroad. So students should learn about the differences between the domestic and foreign education styles and try to find more solutions to adjusting to the open education in order to be well prepared for their overseas studies both mentally and practically.

3.__________ Students should ask related teachers to help make plans consistent with their practical condition. There should be both macro and detailed learning plans. Macro learning plans require students to hold on to the primary direction of their overseas studies and detailed learning plans require them to arrange learning content for each course and semester(學期). After the plan is made, they should strictly keep to them. Otherwise, the plan will have no effect.

4.__________ As Chinese students are not familiar with the place and people, and have to relatives by their sides, the first feeling they will feel is loneliness, which makes it especially important to learn to develop relationships with people around them. They may meet all kinds of fascinating people abroad. They should go out of their way to be friendly and strike up conversations. The most important thing is to pluck up enough courage to open your mouth and talk with others. Foreigners really like children of this kind and are willing to help them.

5._________ Foreign children are used to learning by themselves in or after class, but Chinese children are used to teacher-centered education. Guided and supervised by parents and teachers, Chinese students don’t have much learning space. They may score high in exams, but they may lack independent learning skills and tend to be in a state of passive learning. So the most basic thing that children need to know is that studying abroad requires that they should adapt to overseas studies as soon as possible and try their best to learn actively and independently.

When she moved the covering cloth to look upon his tiny face, she was shocked. The doctor turned quickly and looked out the tall hospital window. The baby had been born without ears.

Time proved that the baby’s hearing was perfect. When he rushed home from school one day and threw himself into his mother’s arms, she sighed, knowing that his life was to be full of heart- breaks for his imperfect appearance.

He grew up, handsome for his misfortune and popular with his fellow students. He might have been class monitor, but for that. He developed a gift, a talent for literature and music.

Two years went by. One day, his father said to the son, “You’re going to the hospital, son. Mother and I have someone who will donate the ears you need. But it’s a secret.” The operation was a brilliant success, and a new person turned up. His talents blossomed into genius, and his school and college became a series of success. Later he married and entered the diplomatic service.

One day ,he urged his father, “Who gave so much for me?I must know! I could never do enough for him.”

“I do not believe you could, ” said the father, “but the agreement was that you are not to know... not yet.”

The years kept their secret, but the day did come--- one of the darkest days that a son must endure. He stood with his father over his mother’s casket (棺材). Slowly, tenderly, the father reached out a hand and raised the thick, reddish-brown hair to show that the mother had no outer ears.

“Mother said she was glad she never let her hair be cut, ” he whispered gently, “and nobody ever thought Mother less beautiful, did they?”

Real beauty lies not in the physical appearance, but in the heart. Real treasure lies not in what can be seen, but in what cannot be seen. Real love lies not in what is done and known, but in what is done and not known.

C. Because her long hair was her pride.

D. Because she liked her thick and brown hair.

4.Which is the best title for the passage?

A. A Misfortunate Boy B. Mother’s Hair

請認真閱讀下列短文,并根據(jù)所讀內容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一個最恰當?shù)膯卧~。注意:每個空格只填1個單詞。

Life is what we make of it. How can we make our life better?Through focus—focusing on one thing and getting it done. Learning to focus can help us in many ways. It can help us realize what we really want in life. It can help us make good decisions. It can also help us accept ourselves just the way we are. Focus can help us gain power and happiness.

Focus,or concentration,is a skill that can be taught,so there are some exercises you can do to improve your focus. Start with easy exercises like staring at a picture on the wall for a few minutes without moving or talking to anyone. Once you learn how to block out your surroundings, your focus will improve.

Learn to manage your pressure. Many athletes require intense focus in their training and games. They try to spare some time to calm themselves down. It isn’t enough to just practice your shots because when game time comes, the stress and tension can make one miss a shot. This is when focus comes into play.

Another mind exercise you can do is picturing yourself in a desired situation, and then you work around your picture. Actors do this a lot to block out laughter or noise. An example of this would be to imagine yourself in a potentially stressful situation, like a singer in a concert. Try to play out the scene in your mind what you would do if different things are to happen. This can actually be a lot of fun,and you learn how to improve your focus by concentrating on one thing only.

If this sounds a little strange to you,you could try another strategy. Why not make lists?Make a list of the things you need to accomplish. Study your lists carefully and see where you can move things around. Planning helps you focus. It will also not stress you out.

A better way to improve your focus is to take breaks. Don’t spend it with your co?workers beside the coffee machine talking about problems in the office. Doing this will actually cause your stress and cause you to lose focus on the things that need to be done. Your breaks should be as quiet as possible. Read a book or take a walk. Go and do something that will give your brain a rest.

The reason why we lose focus so easily is because we have too much on our minds. Of course,it could also because you are bored with nothing to do. A good balance between a too relaxed brain and a too active brain is necessary. Find your ability to work, and try not to waste your time. Improving your focus also mean knowing what you can do and being confident about doing it well.
