3.People all over the world love listening to music and most have their favourite songs which they listen to again and again.But how did it all start?When could people first choose the music they wanted to listen to?
The 1900s:The player radio
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries,pianos became very popular and rich families bought"player pianos".A player piano played music that was programmed on paper rolls with holes in them and you could also play it like a holes in them and you could also play it like a"normal"piano.In the mid 1920s player pianos began to disappear mainly because the radio got more popular.
The 1910s:The first phonographs (留聲機)
As early as 1877,there were phonographs to play music on and by the 1910s,many families had one.The music was on"records"made of aluminum foil (鋁箔).People could listen to them only a few times before the foil broke.Later the music was on wax cylinders (蠟筒).There could hold longer recordings (two to four minutes),and people could play them more often.
The 1920s:Gramophones and record players
Gramophones were similar to the phonographs,but they used flat vinyl (乙烯基) disks and not cylinders to hold the music.The disks went round,and first a steel needle,then later a small diamond,"took"the music off the record.Some of the disks could play for more than 20minutes per side.Today some music lovers who are crazy about disks still use vinyl records.
The 1960s-1970s:Cassettes and the Walkman
In the 1960s,the first cassette recorders became popular.A big step towards modern technology was the invention of the first portable (便攜式的) cassette player,the"Walkman",by the Japanese company,Sony in 1979.For the first time,people could listen to their favourite music while they were travelling,doing sports,or going for walks.

13.How important is homework?According to the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD),it's not that important! The district has made a big change for the 2013-2014 academic school year.Starting July 1,homework will count for only 10% of a student's academic grade.
The district hopes the limit on homework will allow students to spend less time struggling with large am ounts of work and more time on hobbies and with their families.Besides, the policy states,"by limiting the weight of homework toward a student's grade,a truer picture of the student's knowledge will be reflected in the achievement grade."
The new policy doesn't remove homework. It states that homework is an opportunity for students to practice their skills and a tool for students to prepare for upcoming lessons.Still,L.A.Unified is joining a growing list of school districts that have set limits on the amount of homework that students receive.
Exactly how much time kids should spend on homework is a topic for debate.Harris Cooper,a professor at Duke University, says that the right amount of homework time is ten minutes per day multiplied by the student's grade. This means a third grader should spend 30 minutes per day on homework. And a sixth grader would spend 60 minutes.Five years ago,Cooper wrote about his views in TFK."Good homework assignments in the proper amount will have positive effects,"he wrote."Bad homework assignments,or too much homework, will have negative effects."
Critics of the new L.A.district policy say that homework is an important part of learning. They say many kids just won't put in the effort if homework doesn't count toward their grade.Pro-homeworkteachers argue that students who do their homework perform better on tests and in school than those who do not. They fear that the new policy will enc ourage students to neglect homework assignments.

Haplessly,the last group of children due to leave Prague in the beginning of September could not do so-World WarⅡbroke out,and swallowed them up.
Nicky did not discuss his particular task with his wife,Grete.It was only when she found a scrapbook in 1988,with names of the rescued children,their (lost) parents and the foster families that had taken them in,that his heroism came to light.Nicky has received several awards in Britain and the Czech Republic.

15.There are two factors (61)determining(determine) an individual's intelligence.The first is the sort of brain he is born(62)with.Human brains differ considerably,some being more capable than others. (63)Buthowever good a brain he has to begin with,an individual will have a low intelligence unless he has(64)opportunities(opportunity) to learn.So the second factor is what happens to the individual-the sort of environment(65)wherehe is brought up.If an individual is handicapped(受阻礙)environmentally,it is(66)likely(like)that his brain will fail to develop and he will never reach the level of intelligence of which he is capable.
The importance of environment in determining an individual's intelligence can be shown by(67)thecase of the twins,Peter and Mark.When the twins were three months old,(68)theirparents died,and they were placed in separate foster homes.Peter was brought up by parents of low intelligence with poor educational opportunities.Mark was educated in the home of well-to-do parents who(69)had been(be) to college.This environmental difference continued until the twins were in their late teens,when they(70)were given(give) tests to measure their intelligence.Mark's I.Q.was 125,twenty-five points higher than the average and fully forty points higher than his twin brother.
