【題目】As early as the mid-18th century, some people began raising doubts about Marco Polo’s travels. They pointed to seemingly obvious omissions in his descriptions of the Far East. In 1995,historian Frances Wood argued in her book “Did Marco Polo Go to China?” that the famous explorer from Venice never made it pass the Black Sea. She noted that his travel journal The travels of Marco Polo” left out the Great Wall of China, chopsticks and tea drinking among other details. Furthermore, Chinese documents from Polo’s day make no mention of the explorer and his men.

Wood and other scholars have argued that Marco Polo based his tales of China on information collected from fellow trades who had actually been there. Last year, a team of Italian researchers became the latest skeptics to challenge Polo’s accounts. They said that archaeological evidence didn’t support his description of Kublai Khan’s Japanese invasions.

Now, however, research by Hans Ulrich Vogel of Germany’s Tubingen University might help prove Marco Polo was true. In a new book Marco Polo Was in China”, the professor of Chinese history counters the arguments most frequently made by skeptics. He tries to prove that Marco Polo spoke the truth. He suggests, for example, that Polo didn’t included the Great Wall in his book because it only achieved its great importance under the Ming Dynasty, several hundred years later. Vogel further explains that Chinese records from the 13th and 14th centuries routinely avoided setting down visits from Westerners.

Historians before him have touched on these issues while defending Marco Polo’s honor. But Vogel also relies on another evidence: the explorer’s very detailed descriptions of currency and salt production in the Yuan Dynasty. According to Vogel, Polo documented these aspects of Mongol Chinese culture in greater detail than any other of his time. This is a hint that the Venetian relied on his own powers of observation.

Will we ever know whether Marco Polo traveled to China? Perhaps not, but the consequences of his real of fictional journey are still felt across the globe. One reader of “The travels of Marco Polo” was Christopher Columbus, who stepped upon the New World while following in his Venetian idol’s footsteps.

【1】France Wood doubted Marco Polo’s travel’s to China because his description__________.

A. missed some important culture of China.

B. covered so much about trader’s life.

C. was full of obvious mistakes.

D. seemed less detailed.

【2】Vogel’s trust on Marco Polo is based on _______.

a. the Great Wall didn’t gain its importance then

b. records in Yuan Dynasty mentioned Polo

c. Polo’s mention of the currency and salt.

d. Polo’s other works are believable

e. Polo recorded what he saw in great detail

【題目】閱讀理解
A Kickstarter launched Friday will allow interested parties to set up a camera and pet toys in their home for anyone to play with their pets remotely. It's called the ipet Companion, an Internet-connected camera and device that streams video online and allows basic commands from people watching. They can move the camera, look at their pet and press a button to swing a toy around.

Obviously, demand is strong. The Kickstarter proved so popular that Scott Harris, iPet Companion's founder, said that thousands of people started asking for it.
The reason why people keep talking about this is the emotional(情感的) connection they have from a thousand miles away. If you want, you can enter a queue to move the camera and play with the pets. Each room has toys that are hooked(鉤住) into Internet-connected devices, and you can move them by pressing a button.
But there's sort of a problem: Pets get bored easily. Young pets will stay more interested than adult pets, but finally even a baby pet will get bored, too. To stop that from happening, you'd better limit the pets' access(接近) to the boys and change the place where they're located in the room.
Harris understands this and said you can plug anything into that adapter(適配器) ---toys that you can get on your own. And that's where the iPet Companion really gets interesting. Harris explained that the device is actually sort of a Trojan horse to bring the “Internet of things” to more homes. You don't really have to use it for pets. The adapter could be used for any device with an electrical plug---a sprinkler, say, that you'd be able to activate to water your grass.
“Our whole goal, our whole purpose is to let anyone control any physical object that they want to while they travel anywhere in the woorld,” Harris said.
根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,選擇最佳答案,并將選定答案的字母標(biāo)號填在題前括號內(nèi)。

A.it can be used to kill time
B.it is easy to control online
C.it can meet all of their demands
D.they can show their love for faraway pets by using it
(3)Why do the pets stop playing the toys soon?
A.Pets are not clever enough to play the toys.
B.They don't receive rewards from the games.
C.Toys are played with too often at the same place.
D.Adult pets prevent young ones from playing the games.
(4)What can we infer from what Scott Harris said?
A.iPet Companion is only a kind of toy.
B.Kickstarter can be used in many other ways.
C.iPet Companion can actually be turned into a toy horse.

You may like chewing gum (口香糖) after meals to stop your breath smelling bad; or your mother might use a special neutralizer (調(diào)理劑) to protect her permed hair (燙發(fā)). But have you thought about the chemical principles behind such everyday actions?
On March 2, the Senior 3 students from the IB (International Baccalaureate, 國際文憑) classes at Beijing Huijia Private School presented their discoveries, all in fluent English. This kind of seminar is held every year to show the achievements of the IB chemistry experiment lessons offered by the school. IB is a qualification based on a common curriculum (課程) for students aged 16-18 in any country and is recognized by universities everywhere.

"Once I saw an advertisement for xylitol (木糖醇) gum," recalled Zhang Xinju. "Suddenly an idea came to my mind: are there any chemical reactions when the xylitol is working on our teeth?"
Zhang and his partner Bu Xuan visited several hospitals to try and find out. "Doctors know that xylitol can protect teeth, but few could explain how the chemical reactions happen," said the 17-year-old boy.
Presenting the results of their research in English to an audience of Chinese and foreign judges was never a problem for the students.
"Textbooks for IB students are in English, and our teachers speak in English," explained Wei Duan and Han Yu, whose research topic was "The Acid-Base Reaction (酸堿反應(yīng)) in the process of Hair-Perming".
"In Senior 1 we often referred to Chinese textbooks, but we found we could understand and express it all in English by the second year."
Lu Jiang, the school's IB chemistry teacher and China's only IB vice-examiner, is proud that her students can apply scientific theories they learn in class to daily life.
"You might have learned these facts from you kindergarten teachers, but few think about the theories behind them," Lu said. "This kind of practice is intended to develop the scientific thinking they will need in their future studies."

Venice is in the northeast of Italy. It wasn't built on land, like Beijing or Shanghai, but on more than 110 islands. Seawater is everywhere around the city.
Even so, travel isn't difficult. The waterways have always been the best way to get around. There are 117 waterways and more than 400 bridges that can guide you where you want to go. People in Venice move from place to place by boat.
Water makes the city special, but it is also a big problem. Sometimes tourists will have such strange experiences. One moment they walk across the Rialto Bridge, and there's nothing special. But when they come back to the bridge an hour later, it's underwater and everyone is wearing rain shoes.
Once, people used too much underground water. This made the city get lower little by little. Now the city has gone down by 23 centimeters. Another problem is the rising seawater. The temperature has risen over the years. This has made the ice of the Arctic Ocean (北冰洋) melt (融化). Every year, high waters hit the city in autumn and winter. When a lot of water comes, more than half of the city is underwater.
Scientists are trying different ways to stop the city from getting even lower. The Italian government has asked some of Italy's biggest companies to build the MOST project, which was planned to be build under the seawater to stop the rising water. Anyway, this project is helping solve the problem.
