Watercolor is the oldest paints known. It dates back to the early cave men who discovered they could add lifelike qualities to drawings of animals and other figures on the walls of caves by mixing the natural colors found in the earth with water.

Fresco(壁畫), one of the greatest of all art forms, is done with watercolor. It is created by mixing paints and water and applying these to wet plaster(灰泥). Of the thousands of people who stand under Michelangelo's heroic ceiling in the Sistine Chapel, very few know that they are looking at perhaps the greatest watercolor painting in the world.

The invention of oil painting by the Flemish masters in the fifteenth century made fresco painting go down-hill, and for the next several centuries watercolor was used mainly for doing sketches(素描) or as a tool for study. It was not until the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that English painters put back watercolor as a serious art form. The English have a widely-known love for the outdoors and also small, private pictures. The softness of watercolor had a remarkably strong attraction for them.

The popularity of watercolor continued to grow until in the twentieth century. The United States passed England as the center for watercolor, producing such well-known watercolor artists as Thomas Eakins and Andrew Wyeth.

1.What is the passage mainly about?

A. The gradual weakness of fresco painting.

B. Oils having more power or influence over watercolor.

C. The rediscovery of watercolor in England.

D. The start and development of watercolor.

B. Italian fresco artists

A

From the jagged (鋸齒狀的) peaks of the Himalayas to the powerful Yangtze River that flows into the Pacific, China’s vast terrain (地帶) and varied climate make it the sixth most biologically diverse nation on the planet.

Since 1998, The Nature Conservancy has been working in China’s northwest Yunnan Province to protect some of the amazing natural and cultural diversity unique to this country for its future generations. In cooperation with Chinese local and state government agencies, the Conservancy established the Yunnan Great Rivers Project, which protects an area about the size of West Virginia.

Did you know?

●China contains 10% of the world’s total species.

●Yunnan is home to 75% of Tibetan medicinal herbs and 30 endangered species.

What is the Nature Conservancy trying to do?

Education for Sustainability (可持續(xù)性)

The Nature Conservancy recognizes that environmental education is an important element of working closely with local communities to achieve sustainable conservation results. In response, the Conservancy launched a new program called Education for Sustainability which tests means of teaching and learning that combine conservation goals, social justice, and appropriate development and participation in a vision and mission for personal and social change.

Promoting Green Tourism

Tourism is both an environmental threat and an economic opportunity, with the potential to provide extremely needed income to northwest Yunnan. The Conservancy is working with local communities, government agencies, and tourism enterprises(企業(yè)) to develop strategies for “green” tourism which will limit the footprint of mass tourism while generating income for local people. In addition to combining tourism development and management at our five action sites, we assisted with regional marketing efforts to promote eco-tourism opportunities.

For many people around the world, a subway journey means speeding from one dull station to the next, surrounded by too many uncomfortable, impatient people. But on the Moscow Metro, taking the subway is like walking through a national heritage site. Depending on where you get off, you'll receive a brief course in architectural movements and face colorful glass windows, marble(大理石)columns, gilded (鎏金的)mosaics and painted scenes from Russian history.

“These extraordinarily beautiful places are unlike any metro station I've ever seen," says Vancouver-based photographer David Burdeny.

When Burdeny, who himself has a master's degree in architecture, first found out about Moscow’s metro stations, he was struck by the work of art. In all, he has photographed 20 of the most beautiful stations.

Burdeny had originally planned to focus on Russian stations more generally, taking photos of examples in both St. Petersburg and Moscow.

“But when I saw the stations in Moscow, they just completely blew away the St. Petersburg ones,"he says.

Shooting in the subway sounds simple, but it is not without challenges. For one thing, Burdeny had to figure out a way to access them between 12:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m., when the stations were closed.

In the end, he settled on Arbatskaya Metro Station, whose vaulted (拱頂?shù)模?arches he found the most beautiful. But it also represented a challenge he was not sure he was able to overcome: conveying the hugeness of the spaces. The Arbatskaya platform, for example, stretches 820 feet.“Some of the arches are quite long,” he says. “When you enter them, they' re just so completely grand."

1. We can learn from the text that David Burdeny_.

A. is a world-famous architect

B. is studying Russian history

C. took the subway to and from work

D. took photos of Moscow subway stations

2.What Burdeny found challenging was __.

A. when to take photos of Moscow subway stations

B. whether to work in St. Petersburg or Moscow

C. how to photograph the long arches at Arbatskaya Station

D. where to get off to study the Moscow metro system

3.What does the underlined word “shooting” mean in Paragraph 6?

A. Firing bullets from a gun.

B. Taking photographs.

C. Making movies.

D. Throwing the ball at the basket.
