【題目】There are some places in the world that one wants to return again and again. After my first visit to Boracay, Philippines, in March of last year, I knew that I would return soon. I was there again in April this year.
It was on the island that I first tried kite-surfing. The Bulabog Beach on the eastern side of Boracay has many wind-surfing and kite-surfing sports centers. I randomly chose a center, which happened to be an affiliation(附屬機構(gòu)) of International Kiteboarding Organization.
The organization has training centers around the world, and some of its courses are tailored for beginners like me.
The center on Boracay has different courses, from recreational to professional. In the recreational category, trainees have to do the "discovery" level before they go on to more advanced levels.
My instructor Brian, who was from the United States, strictly followed the center's rules about levels, and began the training by asking me to set up the kite on the sand, which was the very first step at the ground level of the "discovery" course.
I had a teammate, and we both couldn't wait to have the feeling of riding with the wind on the surface of the water. But we had to practice at length the various skills for assessing the direction of the wind and the move-ments of our bodies.
It was there in March, which was still the windy season on the island. Because of the winds, the Philippines were important on the ancient marine (海上的) trade route. They call the wind Amihan, or trade winds.
From May to October, the Amihan wind is channeled through the hills on the northern and southern ends of the island from the east onshore, and onto the Bulabog Beach on the eastern coast of the island.

【4】Why did the Philippines call the wind "trade winds"?
A. Because the Philippines started to trade in the windy season.
B. Because the winds made the Philippines active in the ancient time.
C. Because the Philippines had been relying on the winds to trade.
D. Because the winds benefited the Philippines a lot in the ancient maritime trade.

【題目】B
They text their friends all day long. At night, they do research for their term papers on laptops and communicate with their parents on Facebook. But as they walk the paths of Hamilton College, students are still pulling around old-fashioned textbooks — and loving it.
"The screen won’t go blank," said Faton, a sophomore. "There can’t be a virus. It wouldn’t be the same without books. They’ve defined ‘academia’ for a thousand years."
Though the world of print is receding before a tide of digital books, blogs and other websites, a generation of college students weaned on technology appears to be holding fast to traditional textbooks. That loyalty comes at a price. Textbooks are expensive, and students’ frustrations with the expense, as well as the emergence of new technology, have produced a lot of choices for obtaining them.
Many students are reluctant to give up the ability to flip quickly between chapters, write in the margins and highlight passages, although new software applications are beginning to allow students to use e-textbooks that way.
"Students grew up learning from print books," said Nicole Allen, "so as they transition to higher education, it’s not surprising that they carry a preference for a format that they are most accustomed to."
For now, buying books the old-fashioned way — new or used — prevails. If a campus store sold a new book for $100, it would typically buy the book back for $50 at semester’s endand sell it to the next student for $75. When Louis Boguchwal, a junior, tried to sell a $100 linear algebra textbook back to the college bookstore, he was offered $15. "It was insulting," he said. "They give you next to nothing."
Rosemary Rocha, 26, she waits to borrow the few copies her professors leave on reserve at the library, or relies on the kindness of classmates. "My friends will let me borrow their books in exchange for coffee or a slice of pizza," she said. "I very seldom buy the textbooks, but I’m always like a chicken without a head."
【題文1】Why do students prefer a book to a digital one?
A. E-books usually spread viruses among students.
B. Textbooks are much cheaper than e-books.
C. E-books can’t be written in the margins.
D. They grew up learning from print books.
【題文2】What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?
A. I am always at a loss what to do.
B. I can’t learn without a textbook.
C. I don’t like eating the head of chicken.
D. I don’t know where to buy textbooks.
【題文3】What did the experience of Louis prove?
A. Bookstores cheated students in textbook sales.
B. Bookstores are king in buying and selling textbooks.
C. Bookstores made it convenient to buy textbooks.
D. Bookstores bought books from students fairly.
【題文4】What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Textbooks will be replaced by e-books soon.
B. E-books attract more students to read.
C. Students still like paper books in a digital age.
D. Technology makes paper textbooks out of date.

If you’re secretly worried about your smart phone addiction, then the new NoPhone might be just the thing you need. It looks and feels exactly like a smart phone, but it does nothing. It’s just a piece of plastic that you can carry around in your hand to fool yourself.
Dutch designer Ingmar Larsen came up with the idea as a joke along with his two friends. To their great surprise, the idea received a lot of attention online and people from all over the world started placing requests for NoPhones of their own. So that’s when the three friends decided to turn to collecting enough fund for mass production.
NoPhone is currently a prototype (模型) that will cost only $12 once it hits the market It is 5.5 inches high, 2.6 inches wide and 0.29 inches thick, bringing it quite close to the latest smart phones on the market. It is described as “battery free”, “no upgrades necessary,” “shatter-proof (抗震)”, “waterproof” and “an alternative to constant hand-to-phone contact that allows you to stay connected with the real world.”
“Phone addiction is everywhere,” the designers insist. “It’s ruining your dates. It’s distracting you at concerts. It’s blocking sidewalks. Now, there is a real solution. With a thin, light and completely wireless design, the NoPhone acts as a substitute to any smart mobile device, enabling you to always have a phone to hold without giving up potential engagement with your direct environment.”
If you’re interested in NoPhone, but concerned about not being able to take selfies (自拍) anymore. Don’t feel upset. The makers do have an upgrade at no extra charge---the mirror sticker. That way, they say, you can enjoy “real-time” selfies with your friends when they’re standing right behind you.

【題目】任務(wù)型閱讀
Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to a Chinese student, they always say, “My spoken English is poor.”
I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.
First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary.
However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if you choose a positive attitude. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.
Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY NOT ACCURACY. Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for grammar and using the right words and spelling them correctly. However, in speaking your aim is fluency. You want to get your message across, to talk to someone in English, as quickly and as well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense , but it doesn't matter.
The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening . You have one mouth but two ears !All that hearing is necessary for you to start speaking .
Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor.
A. The person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for nay mistakes he hears.
B. They may try to avoid making similar mistakes next time.
C. Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary.
D. If you have this proactive outlook, then you will see English opportunities wherever you go.
E. However, their spoken English does not have to remain “poor”!
F. Second , they are afraid of making mistakes.
G. The second reason lies in the reluctance of using what has just been learned.
