New research shows that kids from low-income families may be falling behind their peers because an important part of their brains is underdeveloped.
Researchers from MIT’ s McGovern Institute for Brain Research compared the brains of 12-and 13-year-olds from rich families with the brains of their peers from lower-income families. They found that one particular area of the brain—the neocortex(新皮質(zhì)),which plays a key role in memory and learning ability—is thinner in children from lower-income households.
This is a crucial part of the brain for young students, who are often tested based on their ability to recall large chunks of information. Children who had a thinner neocortex performed poorly on standardized tests, researchers found.More than 90% of high-income students scored above average on a statewide math and English/Language Arts standardized test, compared with less than 60% of low-income students.Differences in cortical(腦皮層) thickness could account for almost half of the income-achievement gap in this sample, researchers wrote.
“Just as you would expect, there’ s a real cost not living in a supportive environment. We can see it not only in test scores,in educational attainment, but within the brains of these children,”says psychological scientist John Gabrieli,a professor of brain and cognitive sciences at MIT and one of the study’s authors.
Since a 2011 study published by Stanford University professor Sean Reardon found that the gap between standardized test scores of high-income and low-income students has grown by about 40% since the 1960s,there’ s been a lot of research aimed at finding links between income and achievement, rather than race alone. The MIT study found low-income children were equally likely to have a thinner neocortex,no matter their races.
Gabrieli and his co-authors can’ t say exactly why poor children’ s brains develop differently because there are too many possibilities to count.Their findings do,however, underline the importance of early intervention(干預(yù)) to ensure that low-income kids get the tools they need to succeed.

New research shows that kids from low-income families may be falling behind their peers because an important part of their brains is underdeveloped.
They found that one particular area of the brain—the neocortex(新皮質(zhì)),which plays a key role in memory and learning ability—is thinner in children from lower-income households.
根據(jù)本段第一句“Just as you would expect, there’ s a real cost not living in a supportive environment. We can see it not only in test scores, in educational attainment, but within the brains of these children,”可知在一個supportive environment中,不僅僅對考試成績有很大幫助,而且對孩子的頭腦發(fā)展也有很大的幫助。
They found that one particular area of the brain—the neocortex(新皮質(zhì)),which plays a key role in memory and learning ability—is thinner in children from lower-income households可知低收入家庭的孩子可能會落后同齡人,主要是因為大腦中的the neocortex(新皮質(zhì))更薄。

The Mississippi
The Mississippi is a great river whose relationship with man goes way back beyond its discovery in the 16th century. The River Indians used it as a highway and as a source of food, and it was they who gave it its name —— “misi” meaning “great” and “sipi” meaning “water”. When the length of its branch, the Missouri, is added to it, the Mississippi becomes greater. 【1】 . From the source of the Missouri to the tip of the delta (三角洲), it is 2, 480 miles long.
Great rivers are likely to suffer floods. In 1927 the Mississippi flooded 26 thousand acres, sweeping away farms, towns, everything in its path. In 1938 its floods drowned or killed 200 people and made millions homeless. Today the river has largely been controlled. 【2】 .
Industries have spread down some of the waterways of the delta, but otherwise the delta is a remote place, the homeland of a little colony of French Canadians that the British drove out of Nova Scotia in the 18th century. They still speak French, mixed with English, Indian, Spanish and Negro idioms. They keep to themselves, fanning the rich soil of the delta. 【3】 __.
【4】 . Pioneers who first reached its banks wondered not only where it went, but what lay beyond. In 1764 the French founded a city on the right bank of the river, and named it after their king, Louis XV. This city, named St. Louis, became the jumping-off place for the adventurous men and women who opened up the Great Plains, and the way to the Far West.
Some 40 years earlier, at the beginning of the 18th century, the French had founded another city just above the Mississippi delta, New Orleans. 【5】 . New Orleans is one of the great ports of the world, and one of the greatest terminals for both sea and river traffic.
A. It was the Mississippi that made the city what it is
B. Levees, high banks built of earth, hold back the flood waters
C. Therefore, as we know, it’s the third longest river in the world
D. It is known that the “Great Water” has also been a frontier river
E. However, they paddled up and down the Mississippi in their boats to seek their fortune
F. The “Great Water” always remains a thread (分界線), for the streets of the city are below the level of the river
G. They call themselves Cajuns, who have actually been leading fairly primitive lives and preserving their own traditions

Exercise early.
Morning fitness class or gym time before work?Go ahead, give it a try.【1】While experts aren’t exactly sure why,it could have something to do with morning exercise’s ability to help regulate the secretion(分泌物) of certain hormones involved in blood pressure management, which may lead to better sleep.

If your stomach starts rumbling(發(fā)出咕嚕聲) before bed, try reaching for good-for-you foods that actually promote sleep, like walnuts, tart cherries, or Greek yogurt instead. 【2】Eating too much of anything within a few hours of going to bed could suppress(抑制) your body’s ability to produce sleep-promoting melatonin.

__【1】___You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s how:
Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. ___【2】____A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what happens to your time.
Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, mobile phones, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
Make good use of your time in class. ___【3】_____Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material. ___【4】___ If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you’ll remember it longer.
Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be over worried.
___【5】____ You will probably discover them after you have tried these.
A. There are other methods that might help you with your studying.
