Most visitors come to the UK expecting the rain and weather for which the country is famous. However, when summer finally arrives, British people like nothing more than heading for the coast. Here are some of more famous places of interest that you could expect to visit on a trip to Britain. Black pool, in the northwest of England, is the most visited place in the UK. Each year around 6.5 to 7 million people come to enjoy the miles of sandy beaches, the 158m Black pool Tower and the 11km-long Golden Mile, where there are entertainments, pubs, ice rinks (溜冰場(chǎng)) and even a zoo. On the south coast of the country you can find Brighton. Until 1786, Brighton was a sleepy village. Then the future king, George IV, decided to build a house there, and now it has become a large, international centre. Apart from the beaches, Brighton is famous for its pier (碼頭). There are theatres, entertainments and restaurants there. Brighton is also fantastic for shopping. If you want to travel a little further, why not go to Cornwall in the far southwest of the UK? South Cornwall offers miles of sandy beaches and beautiful scenery. The climate there is warmer than the rest of Britain, and you can even find palm trees. For a bit more excitement, go to North Cornwall. The scenery there is nicer, and the beaches are famous for their powerful waves. As a result, North Cornwall has become the home of British surfing. One word of warning though, if you are using the roads in the UK during holidays, you can expect long traffic jams on the motorways. It might be better to take the train.

Each of us has goals for life. Some of these may be long-term (長(zhǎng)期的) or1lifetime ones, and other dreams or wishes for more immediate satisfaction.
Just as you2great pleasure when you're trying to3short-term goals, there's also power in having long-term and lifetime goals. Both 4are valuable and serve each other. In order to be5in achieving a short- or long-term wish or goal, you must place your focus on the6result and train your mind on either a moment-to-moment, day-to-day, month-to-month, or year-to-year level.
For example,7a farmer is to plow (耕地) a straight line, he must keep his eye on a faraway point. If his attention is8just a few feet in front of him, he will not plow straight. So, in order for his field to be plowed straight, he must 9and focus on his long-term goal.

Letter One
Dear Editor,
After I finish my homework, I often go online and chat with my friends. Sometimes I play Internet games. But my parents hate to see me playing games on the computer. Maybe they have heard too much news about how QQ and Internet games harm children. Once I went to a net bar to play games after school. But after that I told my parents that I was playing basketball at school. I said so because I didn't want to make them unhappy. I feel bad about it. However, I need to rest for a while by playing computer games after studying for a long time. I really want my parents to understand that. Do foreign parents do the same to their children? Please help me.
Li Ping, Nantong
Letter Two
Dear Li Ping,
I think it's not strange for parents to keep their children away from anything bad. Foreign parents will do the same as your parents! They may not let their children watch TV for too long a time, or like your parents, they don't want their children to play computer games.
Talk to your parents and be honest to them, I think. Tell them what you are doing and why you are doing so to make them understand you. It's never good to do things behind your parents' backs. They aren't fools as you think sometimes! Our parents seem to know what is the best for us. Remember: to be honest is the best way.
Good luck,
Rebecca

【題目】根據(jù)短文理解,選擇正確答案。
In a world today of immense technology, population growth and economic flourish, planning for future residential (適合居住的) and commercial developments needs careful analysis with well thought through assumptions about effects on the environment and the people of the community.
One example of a growing city is Wooster, Ohio, my place of residency, Wooster in the last five years has grown considerably in population, leading to a growth in commercial business. Surrounded by farmland, Wooster's planning commission chose to extend the community into these farm areas in the form of residential and commercial areas.
Picture this—corn fields, old trees, clean air, country roads, and wildlife are all part of the area. Within four years, the people living on this farm step outside on their front porch to view an extensive shopping center containing Wal-Mart, McDonald's, Wendy's, TCBY, and a Cinemark movie theatre. The once quiet road is now a city street with traffic lights, busy with automobiles day and night. The air smells of car exhaust and fast food.
Some destruction of farmland is unavoidable when a city expands. Instead of expanding outward, planning commissions should consider interior(內(nèi)部的) remodeling of a city. Tearing down unusable buildings could remodel many areas inside the city. In addition, commercialized buildings could extend upwards to avoid unnecessary use of land.
Environmentally, commercial expansion is harmful to the land. Besides forms of pollution, wildlife, including both plants and animals, is put at risk. A planning commission could have realized the benefits of environmental protection. Why not preserve the beauty and naturalness of the land while at the same time allowing for growth?
With a steady growth of population and the need for more homes and more workplaces, many problems arise when planning for the future. The hillsides, fields and animal habitats need to be preserved while expanding cities. In the future, a world covered with concrete and asphalt(瀝青)could become reality. Serious research and analysis are needed when planning for the future of our home communities and for the entire globe to avoid such a miserable result.
(1)It can be inferred from the passage that ______.
A.it is unavoidable to destroy farmland when a city grows
B.Wooster used to be a quiet and peaceful city surrounded by farmland
C.with many nationwide shopping centers, Wooster lost its uniqueness
D.commercial expansion has done no harm to Wooster
(2)It can be concluded from the passage that the author thinks Wooster's planning commission ______.
A.has tried its best to protect the environment
B.preserves the hillsides and fields
C.should have avoided such a tragedy
D.is the cause of environmental pollution
(3)Which of the following sentences best expresses the main idea of the passage?
A.Planning for future residential and commercial developments has bad effects on the environment and the living things.
B.With a safety growth of population, more homes and more workplaces are needed.
C.With immense technology, population growth and economic prosperity, we need to plan for the future.
D.When planning for future developments, effects on the environment should be taken into account.
(4)What is the writer's attitude towards the current planning of cities?
A.Critical(批評(píng)的).
B.Favorable.
C.Objective(客觀的)
D.Depressed.

【題目】Although honey is a natural food with many health benefits, you should avoid giving it to your child until they are a year old. This is because there’s a small chance that it could contain a bacterium (細(xì)菌), which can result in infant botulism (嬰兒型肉毒中毒): a serious form of food poisoning.
Unfortunately, it’s not possible for manufacturers to destroy the bacteria without cooking the honey, which makes the sweet matter unsuitable for babies under one. Although the British Honey Importers and Packers Association advises its members to print on honey labels that it’s not suitable for babies under 12 months, all products will not carry the warning. So it’s up to you to remember not to add honey to your baby’s food.
Although you may feel your baby’s food could do with a spoonful of honey for sweetness, it’s a good idea to avoid giving her too many sugary tastes. Offering too many sweet foods could mean that your baby develops a sweet tooth.
If, however, adding sweetness to certain foods will help. There are plenty of alternatives to honey. Try low-sugar jams on fingers of toast or in sandwiches. You can also sweeten the flavor of sharp or sour fruit such as rhubarb (大黃) by adding jams like apples or pears.
Once your baby is over a year old, it’s safe to introduce honey. By this time, a child’s intestines (腸) have grown enough to process the dangerous bacteria without allowing it to grow. However, because honey is a type of sugar, nutritionists still advise you should limit the amount to avoid problems as to tooth later on.

Does Fame Drive You Crazy?
Although being famous might sound like a dream come true, today's star, feeling like zoo animals, face pressures that few of us can imagine. They are at the center of much of the world's attention. Paparazzi (狗仔隊(duì)) camp outside their homes, cameras ready. Tabloids (小報(bào)) publish thrilling stories about their personal lives. Just imagine not being able to do anything without being photographed or interrupted for a signature!
According to psychologist Christina Villareal, celebrities — famous people — worry constantly about their public appearance. Eventually, they start to lose track of who they really are, seeing themselves the way their fans imagine them, not as the people they were before everyone knew their names. “Over time,” Villareal says, “they feel separated and alone.”
The phenomenon of tracking celebrities has been around for ages. In the 4th century B.C., painters followed Alexander the Great into battle, hoping to picture his victories for his admirers. When Charles Dickens visited America in the 19th century, his sold-out readings attracted thousands of fans, leading him to complain (抱怨) about his lack of privacy. Tabloids of the 1920s and 1930s ran articles about film-stars in much the same way that modern tabloids and websites do.
Being a public figure today, however, is a lot more difficult than it used to be. Superstars cannot move about without worrying about photographers with modern cameras. When they say something silly or do something ridiculous, there is always the Internet to spread the news in minutes and keep their “story” alive forever.
If fame is so troublesome, why aren't all celebrities running away from it? The answer is there are still ways to deal with it. Some stars stay calm by surrounding themselves with trusted friends and family or by escaping to remote places away from big cities. They focus not on how famous they are but on what they love to do or whatever made them famous in the first place.
Sometimes a few celebrities can get a little justice. Still, even stars who enjoy full justice often complain about how hard their lives are. They are tired of being famous already.
(1)It can be learned from the passage that stars today___________.
A.are often misunderstood by the public
B.can no longer have their privacy protected
C.spend too much on their public appearance
D.care little about how they have come into fame
(2)What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A.Great heroes of the past were generally admired.
B.The problem faced by celebrities has a long history.
C.Well-known actors are usually targets of tabloids.
D.Works of popular writers often have a lot of readers.
(3)What makes it much harder to be a celebrity today?
A.Availability of modern media.
B.Inadequate social recognition.
C.Lack of favorable chances.
D.Huge population of fans.
(4)What is the author's attitude toward modern celebrity?
A.Sincere.
B.Sceptical.
C.Disapproving.
D.Sympathetic.
