Zero gravity looks cool. But what about the thing no one likes to talk about? Yes, that is right: going to the bathroom. Zero gravity makes this everyday task quite a challenge. Astronauts have to be toilet-trained all over again.

The Apollo astronauts raised themselves off the seat of their chairs and stuck a clear plastic bag to their back sides with sticky strips. A second astronaut watched closely to be sure no waste matter escaped the seal. (You would not want that stuff floating around the cabin!) When the deed was done, the astronaut cleaned up with a piece of plastic attached to the inside of the bag, removed the bag, dropped a disinfectant(消毒劑) pill in with the waste matter, and put the whole thing, sealed, into a special container.

Donald W. Rethke, an engineer for Hamilton Standard Space Systems, developed a more private way to answer nature’s call: the space toilet. It is somewhat like the kind of toilet one would find on commercial airplanes--with unique adaptations for zero gravity, of course. For instance, it has thigh bars that keep the astronaut from floating off the seat.

The astronaut (male or female) defecates (排便) in a bag and urinates (排尿) in a hose. Solid and liquid wastes are kept separated because at least 85% of the urine is recycled and, yes, after careful filtration(過(guò)濾), used for drinking and other purposes. (Water is always in demand in space.) A vacuum sucks the waste materials into the toilet, where the waste is compacted into hamburger-like patties for easy storage. Although not exactly like an earthbound visit to the toilet, it is at the very least much more private than in the early days of space travel.

1According to the first paragraph, the lack of the gravity can turn something as simple as _______ into a major challenge.

A. eating B. answering nature’s call

C. sleeping D. going to the restroom

2How did astronauts use toilet systems in the Apollo days?

A. None of the waste was separated as it is now.

B. Solid waste was compressed and stored on board.

C. The toilet units used water to remove the waste through the system.

D. The astronauts each used their own private restroom.

3To ensure the user remains seated, the toilet comes equipped with _______

A. a plastic bag B. a sticky strip

C. a wide hose D. a thigh bar

4What can be inferred from the fact that most of the astronauts’ urine is recycled?

A. The recycled water tastes better. B. Water is limited on the space shuttle.

C. It is very convenient to get their urine recycled. D. Space science includes recycling urine.

23“But what about the thing no one likes to talk about? Yes, that is right: going to the bathroom.”

根據(jù)第二段“A second astronaut watched closely to be sure no waste matter escaped the seal. ….and put the whole thing, sealed, into a special container.”

根據(jù)第三段最后一句“For instance, it has high bars that keep the astronaut from floating off the seat.”

根據(jù)第四段23“after careful filtration(過(guò)濾), used for drinking and other purposes. (Water is always in demand in space.)”

Being forgiving to yourself and others can protect against stress and the harm it does to mental health, according to a new study in the Journal of Health Psychology

Researchers looked at the effects of lifetime stress on a person’s mental health, and how more forgiving people got along compared with people who weren’t so forgivingTo do this, they asked 148 young adults to fill out questionnaires that assessed their levels of lifetime stress, their tendency to forgive and their mental and physical health

No surprisepeople with greater exposure to stress had worse mental and physical healthBut the researchers also discovered that if people were highly forgiving of both themselves and others, that characteristic alone almost removed the connection between stress and mental illness

“It’s almost entirely erased—it’s zero,”says study author Toussaint.“If you don’t have forgiving tendencies, you feel the immediate effects of stress in a severe wayYou don’t have anything to cushion you against that stress

How a forgiving personality protects a person from the influence of severe stress is hard to determineThe researchers infer that people who are more forgiving may adopt better skills to deal with stress,or their reaction to major stressors(壓力源)may be slow

Though more research is needed to fully understand the benefits of being more forgiving,Toussaint believes“100”that forgiveness can be learnedHis own previous research has shown that saying a short prayer on forgiveness can help people take the edge off. “I think most people want to feel good and forgiveness offers you the opportunity to do that,”he says

1The researchers got the effect of forgiving by_____

A.analyzing questionnairesB.doing scientific experiment

C.writing research papersD.communicating with 148 adults

2What can we infer from the passage?

A.Forgiving tendencies can deal with all mental problems

B.It remains unknown why forgiveness helps to reduce stress

C.Toussaint’s study has fully discovered the benefits of being forgiving

D.Saying a short prayer on forgiveness is the key to getting rid of stress

3What does the underlined phrase “take the edge off’ in the last paragraph probably mean?

A.Look aheadB.Become relaxed

C.Make up their mindD.Stick to their goals

4What may be the best title for the passage?

A.A new study on physical health

B.Forgiving yourself makes you feel good

C.Forgiveness is good for mental health

D.Getting rid of stress is good for your health

Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main points of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

California condors are North American’s largest birds, will wing-length of up to 3 meters. In the 1980s, electrical lines and lead poisoning nearly drove them to dying out. Now, electric shock training and medical treatment are helping to rescue these big birds.

In the late 1980s, the last few condors were taken from the wild, and there are nowmore than 150 flying overCaliforniaand nearbyArizona,Utahand Baja inMexico. Electrical lines have been killing them off. “As they go in to rest for the night, they just don’t see the power lines,” says Bruce Rideout of San Diego Zoo. Their wings can bridge the gap between lines, resulting in electrocution(電死) if they touch two lines at once. So scientists have come up with a shocking idea. Tall poles, placed in large training areas, teach the birds to stay clear of electrical lines by giving them a painful but undeadly electric shock. Before the training was introduced, 66% of set-freed condors died of electrocution. This has now dropped to 18%.

Lead poisonous has proved more difficult to deal with. When condors eat dead bodies of other animals containing lead, they absorb large quantities of lead. This affects their nervous systems and ability to produce baby birds, and can lead to kidney failures and death. So condors with high levels of lead are sent to Los Angeles Zoo, where they are treated with calcium EDTA, a chemical that removes lead from the blood over several days. This work is starting to pay off. The annual death rate for adult condors has dropped from 38% in 2000 to 5.4% in 2011.

Rideout’s team thinks that theCaliforniacondors’ average survival time in the wild is nowjust under eight years. “Although these measures are not effective forever, they are vital for now,” he says. “They are truly good birds that are worth every effort we put into recovering them.”
