It was my 17th birthday and I was looking forward to see my friends. I arrived at my favorite restaurant, waiting for him. We would have the special birthday dinner. I looked for a familiar face but failed. Soon the restaurant was filled customers, none of which were my friends. An hour later, I went back home, lonely and disappointing. To my great surprise, I found the door was wide open while I arrived home. Nervously, I walk into the dark room. Suddenly, all the light went on and my friends were appeared shouting ‘‘surprise”. I had an unforgettable birthday.

【答案】①see→seeing ; ②him→them ; ③the→a ;④filled后面加with ; ⑤which→whom; ⑥disappointing→disappointed ; ⑦while→when ; ⑧walk→walked ; ⑨light→lights ; ⑩刪去were

look forward to”期盼“,后面要接動(dòng)詞的ing形式,所以see改成seeing。

be filled with是固定用法,”滿是,充滿“,所以filled后面加with。

when表示“當(dāng)……的時(shí)候”。從句中既可用延續(xù)性動(dòng)詞,又可用非延續(xù)性動(dòng)詞,這些動(dòng)詞既可以表示動(dòng)作,又可表示狀態(tài),常跟一般過(guò)去時(shí)。while表示“在……的時(shí)候”“在……期間”。while從句中必須是表示動(dòng)作或狀態(tài)的延續(xù)性動(dòng)詞,常跟過(guò)去進(jìn)行時(shí),所以while改成when。

my friends與 appeared之間是主動(dòng)關(guān)系,所以用主動(dòng)語(yǔ)態(tài),刪去were。

Once upon a time some tiny frogs held a competition. The first to reach the top of a very high tower would be the winner.

A big crowd gathered around the tower to see the race and cheer them on.

The race began. No one in the crowd really believed that any of the tiny frogs would reach the top of the tower. “They will never get to the top! They will never succeed!” someone said.

One by one, the tiny frogs began to collapse(跌下).

The crowd kept shouting, “It is too difficult! No frog will make it!”

More tiny frogs got tired and gave up, but one continued climbing, higher and higher. This one wouldn’t give up.

In the end, he was the only one left—the only one to get to the top. The other frogs naturally wanted to know: How did the frog make it?

One frog stepped forward to ask the winner. It turned out that the winner was deaf.

He had won because he was able to keep his own mind. He was able to keep trying. He couldn’t hear criticism; neither could he hear praise.

We learn a lesson from this story: Don’t let others’ praise or criticism to hold you back on your way to success.

Laws that would have ensured pupils from five to 16 received a full financial education got lost in the 'wash up'. An application is calling on the next government to bring it back.
At school the children are taught to add up and subtract(減法) but, extraordinarily ,are not routinely shown how to open a bank account — let alone how to manage their finances in an increasingly complex and demanding world.
Today the parenting website Mumsnet and the consumer campaigner Martin Lewis have joined forces to launch an online application to make financial education a compulsory element of the school curriculum in England. Children from five to 16 should be taught about everything from pocket money to pensions, they say. And that was exactly the plan preserved in the Children, Schools and Families bill that was shelved by the government in the so-called “wash-up” earlier this month — the rush to legislation before parliament was dismissed.Consumer and parent groups believe financial education has always been one of the most frustrating omissions of the curriculum.
As the Personal Finance Education Group (Pfeg) points out, the good habits of young children do not last long. Over 75% of seven- to 11-year-olds are savers but by the time they get to 17,over half of them are in debt to family and friends.By this age,26% see a credit card or overdraft(透支) as a way of extending their spending power.Pfeg predicts that these young people will “find it much harder to avoid the serious unexpected dangers that have befallen many of their parents' generation unless they receive good quality financial education while at school.”
The UK has been in the worst financial recession(衰退)for generations. It does seem odd that — unless parents step in — young people are left in the dark until they are cruelly introduced to the world of debt when they turn up at university. In a recent poll of over 8,000 people, 97% supported financial education in schools, while 3% said it was a job for parents.
(1)The passage is mainly about _____________.
A.how to manage school lessons
B.how to deal with the financial crisis
C.teaching young people about money
D.teaching students how to study effectively
(2)It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that __________.
A.the author complains about the school education
B.pupils should not be taught to add up and subtract
C.students have been taught to manage their finances
D.laws on financial education have been effectively carried out
(3)The website and the consumer campaigner joined to _________.
A.instruct the pupils to donate their pocket money
B.promote the connection of schools and families
C.ask the government to dismiss the parliament
D.appeal for the curriculum of financial education
(4)According to Pfeg,___________.
A.it is easy to keep good habits long
B.teenagers spend their money as planned
C.parents are willing to pay the debt for their kids
D.it will be in trouble if the teenagers are left alone
(5)A poll is mentioned to ___________.
A.stress the necessity of the curriculum reform
B.show the seriousness of the financial recession
C.make the readers aware of burden of the parents
D.illustrate some people are strongly against the proposal

When it comes to friends, I desire those who will share my happiness with me. When I was in the eighth grade, I had a friend. We were shy and "too serious" about our studies when it was becoming fashionable with our classmates to learn acceptable social behaviors. We said little at school, but she would come to my house and we would sit down with pencils and paper, and one of us would say: "Let’s start with a train whistle today." We would sit quietly together and write separate poems or stories that grew out of a train whistle. Then we would read them aloud. At the end of that school year, we, too, were changed into social creatures and the stories and poems stopped.

When I lived for a time in London, I had a friend. He was in despair (失望) and I was in despair. But our friendship was based on the idea in each of us that we would be sorry later if we did not explore this great city because we had felt bad at the time. We met every Sunday for five weeks and found many excellent things. We walked until our despairs disappeared and then we parted. We gave London to each other.

For almost four years I have had remarkable friends. We write long letters in which we often discover our strangest selves. Each of us appears, sometimes in a funny way, in the other’s dreams. She and I agree that, at certain times, we seem to be parts of the same mind. In my most interesting moments, I often think: "Yes, I must tell..." We have never met.

It is such comforting companions I wish to keep. One bright hour with their kind is worth more to me than the lifetime services of a psychologist (心理學(xué)家), who will only fill up the healing (愈合的) silence necessary to those darkest moments in which I would rather be my own best friend.

【1】In the eighth grade, what the author did before developing proper social behavior was to __________.

A. become serious about her study B. go to her friend’s house regularly

C. learn from her classmates at school D. share poems and stories with her friend

2In Paragraph 2, "We gave London to each other" probably means __________.

A. our exploration of London was a memorable gift to both of us

B. we were unwilling to tear ourselves away from London

C. our unpleasant feelings about London disappeared

D. we parted with each other in London

3According to Paragraph 3, the author and her friend __________.

A. call each other regularly B. have similar personalities

C. enjoy writing to each other D. dream of meeting each other

4In the darkest moments, the author would prefer to __________.

A. ask for professional help B. be left alone

C. stay with her best friend D. break the silence
