I was nineteen years old the first time I saw my own true character.
My trip to and from work each day included a ten-minute walk through the heart of downtown, where the 1 often gathered. Like most busy citizens, I learned to 2 those nameless faces. When it came to homeless beggars, my 3 life experience had led me to one 4 that they are on the street because they choose to be, probably due to alcohol or drugs.
It was an extremely cold day. When I passed the groups of beggars as usual, I heard a shaky voice target me.
“Spare some change?” he asked.
I didn’t even 5 looking up at his nameless face. I briefly 6 him walking into a liquor store and buying whiskey with the money we spared him. Like most teenagers, it took me only moments to7 him.
“I have no money on me,” I said quickly.
Looking back now, I feel as if God had set out that day to teach me a lesson. And God 8. Just a few feet past him, I managed to find the only ice patch on the sidewalk. I 9 and landed heavily on my right knee. The 10 was almost killing me as I tried to get up. Then I heard a shaky voice only inches above me.
“Are you all right?” he asked.
I knew immediately this was the man I had just rushed past. Even in pain, I 11 took a quick moment to sniff for the smell of alcohol on his breath. There was none. He wasn’t 12. I saw the 13
I14to get to my feet. He held my arm as I walked difficultly to the nearby bus stop.
“My name is Mike,” he said. “That’s quite a fall you took, and you really need to get it checked by a doctor,” he said with deep 15.
“This bus goes past the hospital,” I said.
Mike paused, and a look of sudden 16 crossed his face. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small cup. He took out all the change and held it out toward me.
“I think there’s just enough here for you to take the bus,” he said.
I was highly embarrassed as I remembered my 17. I reached for my purse and took out my change. At least ten dollars. I offered Mike all my change.
“Thank you and take care of yourself,” I said. Both of us knew that few minutes earlier I couldn’t have 18 what happened to him.
Mike held his cup tightly, 19 it as if it were the first gift he had ever received.
A half cup of change seemed too small a gift for the man who gave a 20 to every nameless face I’ve ever seen.

For a few years, I have been wearing a ring on my right hand. It’s not always the1ring, but it’s always a ring that has2on it so that when I look at it, I’m 3or reminded of something important. I have made a 4of buying rings like this whenever I see one in a store. Sometimes I give them away as 5to someone like Jennie.
I first met Jennie in the 6 waiting room and we had talked several times. One night I sat down beside her and 7how her son was doing because I knew that he was in very8 condition. She told me that she didn’t know what to do any more because it seemed none of the 9from the doctors was good. They weren’t at all sure her son was going to 10the accident that had hurt him so badly. With11“They’re 12my hope.”
I knew then that it was13just a coincidence that I was wearing the ring that I had on that day. As she 14to talk, I 15slipped the ring off my finger and placed it in Jennie’s hand. I told her to wear it to remember that God loved her and He would be with her16all of this. 17Jennie looked down at the ring, she got excited and then held it tightly,18the word written on the ring was “HOPE”.
The last day I was at the hospital, I saw Jennie in the distance as I got on the lift. She 19and held up the hand with the ring on it as she called out to me saying, “Look, I 20have Hope!”

Blogs allow readers to post comments. There were millions of blogs out there, so I 1 expected anyone to read mine, 2 respond. But almost immediately they did. Twelve messages were 3 after my first entry. I went to the library five times that day—each time there were more.
The next morning I couldn’t wait to get up and hurry to the library. 4 I told my story. It gave structure and a purpose to my day.
For so long I’d been unable to 5 in the real world, afraid of rejection or pity or scorn(輕蔑). 6 here it was safe. This 7 with people on the other side of the screen, many on the other side of the world, was 8 me back to life again.
One particularly cold Tuesday I opened my 9 to see, among emails from bloggers 10 how I was surviving the snow, one saying: “New York Times Journalist Trying to Contact You.” Ian Urbina had discovered my blog 11 when researching an article on people living in their 12 in the U.S. exchanged emails and later he called me up. I hadn’t spoken to 13 for months but, as rain streamed down the glass 14, the words came. I had been living in the car for almost nine months.
The article 15 on the front page. I didn’t know until I opened my computer. There were emails from people around the world. For almost a year on one had known I 16 existed but now here were hundreds wishing me well. They said they were 17 for me.
Now every time I pressed “Check Mail”, there were more messages. I watched the numbers of the visitors counter on my blog 18 by the hundreds. These were people at their computers all over the world. I felt as of I was viewing a miracle unfold(展開).
Over the next week, in libraries and in the car 19 under lamp posts at night, I wrote my papers. I had notepaper spread 20 the dashboard(儀表盤). And every morning in the quiet of the lane, I wrote for my life.
