A shopping center in Brazil is growing vegetables on its rooftop using waste collected from the mall's restaurants. The garden is on the roof of the Eldorado shopping center in Sao Paolo. Workers there use trash(垃圾) from the restaurants to create compost(堆肥) for the garden. Compost is used to improve the soil of the garden. A spokesman for the mall says that the waste from 10 ,000 meals served each day in its food court goes into the compost.
Workers grow different kinds of fhiits and vegetables on the rooftop garden, including tomatoes, lettuce and eggplant. The fruits and vegetables grown there provide free food for the employees. Mall officials also hope to reduce the amount of waste that would end up in a garbage dump. This, they hope, will reduce carbon gases entering the atmosphere.
Cicero Evangelista leads the waste recycling effort. He says about 400 kilograms of organic waste are created every day from the mair s'food court.
He says ,“We weigh the material and add enzymes that remove bacteria, reduce humidity (濕度) and accelerate decomposition(分解). This is how we turn organic waste into organic compost."
Officials at the shopping center want to save as much waste as possible. So,they held workshops for employees to learn how to best collect waste from their stores. Neide Lopes is a food court worker. She says it is helpful to put in the extra work.
“The program is active and creative, and they distribute the produce among us,so it's very good. It is a way of reducing waste, and we receive food that we don't have to pay for,and that's the best part!”
Mall employees say the project reuses waste food to make food and reduces the shopping center's carbon footprint(碳排放量) at the same time.

In a wheat field in France,a cat meets a black-bellied hamster(倉鼠) .Too far from her burrow(洞穴) to run for shelter, the wild hamster rises on her back legs to face her enemy. The cat backs away.“They’re afraid of nothing, says Alexandre Lehmamij a biologist who has worked with these wild hamsters for the past 12 years. “They fight against cats and dogs and even farmers. They try to fight against tractors." It's a good thing that the black-bellied hamster won’t go down without a fight. Because in France, where only 500 to 1,000 remain in the wild, they are in a fight for their lives.
At the Stork and Otter Reintroduction Centre in Alsace,Lehmann and his colleagues breed captive hamsters and set the young hamsters free into the wild. But raising black-bellied hamsters isn't exactly easy. Remember, they have attitude. Forget humans 一 they don't even like each other. “You have to make sure the male and female don't kill each other ,” Lehmann says.
Black-bellied hamsters might think of themselves as tough guys. But to a fox or an eagle, theyJ re just a four-legged snack. To survive, hamsters need to be set into a field with lots of leafy hiding places. That's a problem in Alsace, where most farmers plant com. The com hasn't sprouted(發(fā)芽) in early spring, when hamsters come out of their burrows from winter hibernation(冬眠). In the bare fields the hamsters are easy targets for their enemies.
Some older farmers don't want hamsters in their fields because of their reputation as crop-chewing pests. But most are willing to help, especially since the French government will pay farmers to grow early-sprouting crops such as alfalfa and winter wheat and allow hamsters to be set free on their lands. It's a way to protect not just the hamsters, but also other small animals in leafy fields.
24. By saying “It's a good thing that the black-bellied hamster won't go down without a fight” in Paragraph 1 ,the author means “ ”.
A. The black-bellied hamsters are bom fighters
B. The number of hamsters won’t go down quickly quickly
C. It's good for the increase of hamsters’ population
D. It's a quite great experience to see hamsters fighting
25. Why is it hard to raise black-bellied hamsters?
A. They will run into the wild.
B. They are not fond of humans.
C. The male and female won't live in peace.
D. The male can't understand the female's attitude.
26. What problem do hamsters trying to survive in Alsace have?
A. Their burrows are always taken by foxes.
B. They are unable to feed themselves on com.
C. Their winter hibernation is disturbed frequently.
D. They are exposed to their enemies in early spring.
27. Those farmers who are willing to help hamsters will .
A. plant more corn
B. try to get rid of pests
C. grow plants that shoot early
D. separate them from other animals

How did Indiana get its nickname as “The Hoosier State”? 36 There are many different theories about how the word Hoosier came to be and how it came to have such a connection with the state of Indiana.
One of the earliest known uses of the term is found in an 1827 letter that states, “There is a trick for you — done up by a Hoosier." 37 Around this time,John Finley of Richmond wrote a poem called The Hoosier's which was widely read.
He wrote the word as “hoosher” and did not explain its meaning, which leads historians to believe that Finley felt his readers would already know and understand the word. Finley wrote, “With men of every hue and fashion,Flock to this rising ‘Hoosher’nation."
38 In 1848,Bartlett* s Dictionary of Americanisms defined “Hoosier” as “A nickname given at the west,to natives of Indiana." In John Finley's poem, the word “Hoosher” seems to refer less to the pioneers of Indiana and more to the qualities he thought they possessed, like self-reliance and bravery.
39 Some people think it was created to laugh at Indian訌 as a rough and backward (落后的) place.
Others think that early settlers used the term with pride to describe themselves as a courageous group. One historian,. Jacob Piatt Dunn, even suggested that the word “Hoosier” originally referred to boatmen who lived on the Indiana shore. We may never know for sure. 40
A. So,what does the word mean?
B. The word “Hoosier” was widely used by the 1830s.
C. No one seems to know how the word “Hoosier” came to be.
D. And how did people from Indiana come to be called “Hoosiers”?
E. Other early uses provide some ideas about the meaning of the word.
F. However, research and debate are likely to continue about this mysterious word.
G. Some theories and stories about the origin of the word “Hoosier” are known to be false.

Try to imagine a world without noodles and you may begin to realize just how widespread this thin, tasty food has become. Discoveries in archaeology have proven it to be a surprisingly ancient food, dating back at least to 4000 B. C. Not surprisingly, however, given the noodle's widespread appeal and high status in more than a few culinary(烹任的) traditions, the claim to its invention is often a hotly contested subject.
Many peoples have laid claim to its origination. Historically, both Italy and the Middle East have particularly battled for the title. Italian cooking is closely connected with the pasta noodle, but surprisingly the oldest recorded use of noodles in Italy only dates back to the 8th century, during the Arab conquest of Sicily,an island of Italy. This fact, along with the appearance of wheat flour in the Middle East around 5000 B. C., has led some to favor the Arab world as the more likely candidate to have first created noodles. However, recent evidence has cast some doubt on this theory, when the oldest known bowl of noodles was discovered in northwestern China.
In 2002,a sealed bowl was unearthed from beneath ten feet of soil at the Lajia archaeological site, and found to contain a bowl of amazingly well-preserved noodles. After examination, scientists considered them to be about 4,000 years old. It was also determined that the noodles were not made of the wheat flour known at that time throughout the Middle East, but instead of two types of millet grain, which was widely grown tliroughout China as far back as 7,000 years ago.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the find, however,as archaeochemist Patrick McGovern at the University of Pennsylvania points out,is the degree of skill required to fashion long, thin noodles like those found at Lajia. “This shows a fairly high level of food processing and culinary techniques,” he said.
Although the Lajia discovery makes China home to the oldest known noodles, the origin of the noodle itself remains one of ancient history's many secrets.
29. There has been a worldwide debate over.
A. what food is the oldest
B. where the noodle was invented
C. when the oldest food was discovered
D. whether the noodle is the world's most popular food
30. What can we conclude from Paragraph 2 ?
A. Wheat flour may come from Sicily Island.
B. People in the Arab world first made noodles.
C. The first noodles were made in the 8th century.
D. Italy is less likely to be the noodle's birthplace.
31. What can we learn about the noodles found in 2002?
A. They were in good condition.
B. They were made of wheat flour.
C. They were made 7,000 years ago.
D. They were discovered in the Middle East.
32. What did Patrick McGovern wonder at?
A. The long history of the noodles.
B. The unique way of storing food.
C. The way the noodles were made.
D. The value of the archaeological find.
