Ode to Joy(《歡樂頌》),a 42-episodes TV series, is about five young women living on the 22nd floor of Shanghai’s “Ode to Joy” high-rise community. They become friends while pursuing love and career advancement. Since its appearance on April 18, Ode to Joy has been praised for its realistic description of the hidden struggles of city life. “The audience can relate to the characters since their experiences can be traced back to real life too,” commented the Dahe Daily. “Even better, female audiences can find themselves in one or two of the characters because the characters embody feminine archetypes (原型)found throughout the society.”But the idea of following a group of women as they lead a city life is hardly a pioneering concept. In many ways, Ode to Joy resembles American TV series like Sex and the City (1998-2004) and Desperate Housewives (2004-2012). These two series were praised for their feminist themes, but they also employed well-known female archetypes to illustrate the range of dilemmas women face. Deborah A. Macey, a communications professor at Saint Louis University in the US, divides these archetypes up into four ways: the iron maiden, the sex object, the child, and the mother. “The iron maiden is portrayed as masculine and career-oriented. The sex object owns her sexuality and genuinely loves her body. The child archetype is naive, optimistic, and dim-witted. The mother archetype connects the characters in the series and serves as the dominant storyteller,” Macey said on the online media forum “In Media Res”.
Sounds familiar? Yes, these features can be seen in the characters of Ode toJoy. Andy (Liu Tao), for instance, partly embodies the iron maiden role. She's super smart, rational and direct. She moves from the US to Shanghai and takes the position of CFO at a top Chinese company. Fan Shengmei (Jiang Xin) can be seen as the “mother” in the series. Despite the fact that she s in charge of her own family issues, she takes her friends under her wing and stands up for them. Qu Xiaoxiao (Wang ziwen), the sexy and beautiful girl born with silver spoon, perfectly illustrates what is bitter-sweet relationship between friends and lovers. With that being said. Ode to Joy doesn't lack creativity. It assigns the “child” role to two characters-the straightforward, naive Qiu Yingying (Yang Zi), and the good-tempered, hard-working Guan Ju'er (Qiao Xin).
But this category of TV series has its risks. Having five main characters means the drama isn’t story-driven but character-driven. “It’s not something you often see in Chinese TV dramas,” Yuan Zidan, Ode to Joy’s screenwriter, told Changjiang Daily. “But we want to challenge the norms.”
1.Which of the following is NOT the reason why the audiences like Ode to Joy?
A. Many famous actors and actresses starred in Ode to Joy.
B.Female audiencc can find themselves in its characters.
C.The lives of the characters can be traced back to real life..
D It describes the real hidden life of those who are struggling in big cities.
2. According to Deborah A. Macey, Fan Shengmei in Ode to Joy is the_______________archetype.
A. iron maiden B. child
C. mother D. sex object
3.What does the underlined word “embody” mean in Paragraph 1?
A.illustrate B. classify C. indicate D. recognize
4.What can we infer from the passage?
A .Ode to Joy is the first TV series to show a group of women’s life in the city.
B..Ode to Joy is not a traditional Chinese drama because it is character-driven.
C. The characters in Ode to Joy arc the same with those in Sex and Cify and Desperate Housewives.
D.Andy fully illustrates the iron maiden who is both masculine and career-oriented.

A new study says electronic toys are not helping babies learn.
"Even if companies are marketing them as educational, they're not teaching the babies anything at this time," said Anna Sosa the study's author.
Researchers listened to audio(聲音的)recordings of parents playing with their babies aged 10 months to 16 months. The researchers compared the experiences when the children played with electronic toys, traditional toys such as blocks, or when the children looked at books. What they found is that parents talked less with their babies when the babies played with electronic toys.
Why is this important? Research shows that how quickly children develop language is often based on what they hear from parents. When the infants played with electronic toys, parents said little to their children. But with traditional toys, such as blocks, parents shared the names and descriptions of the animals, colors and shapes as their children played. There was even more information given by parents as their babies looked at the pictures in books.
Of course, there is no need for parents to throw out electronic toys, but they should look at their infants’ play with such toys as entertainment, not a learning experience.
Toy Industry Association spokeswoman Adrienne Appell responded to the study. She said it is important that parents make time to play with their children. "Playing is a way that kids can learn so much, not only cognitive(認(rèn)知的) skills, but social and developmental skills," she said. She added that play should be balanced, including time for just "make believe" activities, as well as traditional and electronic toys.
1.What’s Anna Sosa’s attitude towards companies claiming that their toys are educational?
A. supportive B. doubtful
C. uninterested D. indifferent
2. We can learn from the text that babies in the research __________.
A. interact less with their parents when playing with electronic toys
B. liked traditional toys better than electronic toys
C. talked little with their parents when playing with electronic toys
D. listened to audio recordings of their parents
3.Children develop language more quickly when their parents __________.
A. buy them a lot of toys
B. teach them how to speak
C. read them picture books often
D. throw away their electronic toys
4. According to Adrienne Appell, playing __________.
A. can’t take the place of learning
B. shouldn’t take most of children’s time
C. can’t develop children’s cognitive skills
D. is good to children’s overall development

And you won't necessary succeed in everything for the first time you try. That's okay. Some of the most successful people in the world are the one who've had the most failure. J.K. One morning, my husband Jerry went back to the kitchen as he just finished loading his car. “I guess filling my thermos(保溫瓶) is all that I have left to do, and then I’m off.” Down the drain(下水道) went the hot water that had been warming his thermos.
With a nostalgic(懷舊的) look on his face, he softly said: “Anytime I fill my thermos I think of your mom.” The tone in his voice was so tender(溫柔的) as he spoke of my mother, who is sadly no longer with us.
“Oh honey, I know she’s watching and listening right now with a big smile on her face,” I responded, tears in my eyes.
One morning years ago when we were leaving, mother watched as Jerry was to fill his thermos. Mom then casually said, ‘Jerry, if you filled your thermos with hot water and let it sit a while, your coffee would stay hot for longer then.” With her simple suggestion, his face showed that he was shocked by his own lack of common sense. Well, of course it would!
He poured out the small amount of coffee already in the thermos and refilled it with boiling hot water. Then he poured the water and refilled it with hot coffee. Mom smiled as Jerry did so.

Children of America are getting fatter every time. 13% of the children at the age of 6 to 11 are overweight (too fat).
When we look at the children's lives today in the USA, we can see the root of the problem----sports and foods. Young children like sports but they don't have enough around the start of high school. That's especially true for girls. Meanwhile, to make matters worse, schools are becoming much more interested in sports teams. So children are not able to get enough exercise just when they need it the most. There is also the food problem. Children get most of their calories at restaurants or parties or somewhere else away from home. They often drink too many Cokes. Parents have a lot of fears about telling a child he needs to lose weight-- they are afraid it will push a child into an eating disorder. Some parents fear that pushing children to lose weight means their children will think they're not good enough, or not loved because of their weight. Parents need to come to terms with(向…妥協(xié)) the fact that the family is very important to the children. The most useful program for children is called "family weight control". This is good news. Mom and Dad, even if they don't have weight problems, have to go through the same program as their children and learn how to get some exercise and how to eat healthily.
1.Why are American children getting fatter? The writer thinks ______________________.
A. parents also have weight problem as their children
B. children have less exercise and eat unhealthily
C. schools are more interested in sports teams
D. children drink too many Cokes
2.The writer wants to tell parents that _________________.
A. overweight children are not loved by people
B. family members can help overweight children a lot
C. children are afraid to lose weight when they have to
D. girls don't like to exercise
3.The writer thinks if mother or father is on the same program as their children, _______.
A. their children will not eat better
B. it will make the children eat much more
C. "family weight control" will be successful
D. parents will feel sorry about themselves
4.Which of the following is NOT the root of overweight problem?
A. Family weight control B. Less sports
C. Higher-calorie D. higher-fat foods.

Watercolor is the oldest paints known. It dates back to the early cave men who discovered they could add lifelike qualities to drawings of animals and other figures on the walls of caves by mixing the natural colors found in the earth with water.
Fresco(壁畫), one of the greatest of all art forms, is done with watercolor. It is created by mixing paints and water and applying these to wet plaster(灰泥). Of the thousands of people who stand under Michelangelo's heroic ceiling in the Sistine Chapel, very few know that they are looking at perhaps the greatest watercolor painting in the world.
The invention of oil painting by the Flemish masters in the fifteenth century made fresco painting go down-hill, and for the next several centuries watercolor was used mainly for doing sketches(素描) or as a tool for study. It was not until the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that English painters put back watercolor as a serious art form. The English have a widely-known love for the outdoors and also small, private pictures. The softness of watercolor had a remarkably strong attraction for them.
The popularity of watercolor continued to grow until in the twentieth century. The United States passed England as the center for watercolor, producing such well-known watercolor artists as Thomas Eakins and Andrew Wyeth.
1.What is the passage mainly about?
A. The gradual weakness of fresco painting.
B. Oils having more power or influence over watercolor.
C. The rediscovery of watercolor in England.
D. The start and development of watercolor.
2.The first watercolor artists were ______.
A. early cave men
B. Italian fresco artists
C. Flemish masters
D. English artists of the 18th century
3.According to the passage, watercolor painting was put back in England because ______.
A. it was easy to use outdoors
B. it was a strong medium
B. it was extremely bright in color
D. it was well suited to popular tastes
4.What would the next paragraph most probably deal with?
A. the works of famous American watercolor artists.
B. The weakness of oils as popular paints.
C. Techniques of producing watercolor.
D. Modern American oil painters.

Did you know that women’s brains are smaller than men’s? The average women’s brain weighs 10% less than men’s. Since research has shown that the bigger the brain, the cleverer the animal, men must be more intelligent than women. Right? Wrong. Men and women always score similarly on intelligence tests, despite the difference in brain size. Why? After years of study, researchers have concluded that it’s what’s inside that matters, not just the size of the brain. The brain consists of “grey matter” .
It has been suggested that smaller brain appears to work faster, perhaps because the two sides of the brain are better connected in women. This means that little girls tend to learn to speak earlier, and that women can understand sorts of information from different sources at the same time. When it comes to talking to the boss on the phone, cooking dinner and keeping an eye on the baby all at the same time, it’s women who come out on top every time.
There are other important differences between two sexes. As white matter is the key to spatial(空間的) tasks, men know better where things are in relation to other things. “A great footballer always knows where he is in relation to the other players, and he knows where to go,” says one researcher. That may explain one of life’s great mysteries: why men refuse to ask for directions … and women often need to!
The differences begin when fetuses(胎兒) are about nine weeks old, which can be seen in the action of children and young as one. A boy would try to climb a barrier (障礙物) before him or push it down while a girl would attract help from others. These brain differences also explain the fact that more men take up jobs that require good spatial skills, while more women speech skills. It may all go back to our ancestors(祖先) ,among whom women needed speech skills to take care of their babies and men needed spatial skills to hunt, according to one research.
If all this disappoints you, it shouldn’t. “The brain changes throughout our lives according to what we do with it.” says a biologist.
1.Which of the following is true according to the first paragraph?
A. Women’s brain is 10% less than men’s.
B. Grey matter plays the same role as white matter.
C. Grey matter controls thinking in the brain.
D. Both sexes have the same amount of white matter.
2.What can we infer from the second and third paragraphs?
A. Women prefer doing many things at a time.
B. Men do better dealing with one job at a time.
C. Women do not need to tell directions.
D. Men have weaker spatial abilities.
3.Which of the following do you agree with according to the fourth paragraph?
A. Young boys may be stronger than young girls.
B. More women take up jobs requiring speech skills
C. Women may have stronger feelings than men.
D. Our ancestors needed more spatial skills.
4.What is the writer’s attitude in writing this passage?
A. Defensive. B. Persuasive.
C. Supportive. D. Objective.
