7.Last week my youngest son and I visited my father at his new home in Tucson,Arizona.
He moved there a few years ago,and I was eager to see his new place and meet his friends.
My earliest memories of my father are of a tall, handsome, successful man devoted to his work and family, but uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him; as a school girl and young adult I feared him and felt bitter about him.He seemed unhappy with me unless I got straight A's and unhappy with my boyfriends if their fathers were not as"successful"as he was.Whenever I went out with him on weekends,I used to struggle to think up things to say, feeling on guard.
On the first day of my visit,we went out with one of my father's friends for lunch at an outdoor café.We walked along that afternoon, did some shopping, ate on the street table, and laughed over my son's funny facial expressions.Gone was my father's critical (挑剔的) air and strict rules.Who was this person I knew as my father, who seemed so friendly and interesting to be around? What had held him back before?
The next day my dad pulled out his childhood pictures and told me quite a few stories about his own childhood.Although our times together became easier over the years,I never felt closer to him at that moment. After so many years,I'm at last seeing another side of my father. And in so doing,I'm delighted with my new friend. My dad,in his new home in Arizona,is back to me from where he was.

6.He has breakfast at 2 a.m.because Johnny Barnes,Mr.Happy Man,has work to do.From 4 to 10 a.m.,he greets commuters(每日往返上班者)as they drive by on their way to  work.
For years he worked as an electrician on the Bermuda railway and drove buses. When he  retired,he still wanted to feel useful. So he positions himself on a patch of grass next to a  roundabout that leads into Hamilton,Bermuda's largest city.He smiles and waves at every  single person who passes by.He tells them he loves them-and means it.
In the Matt Morris's short documentary,he says:
I'm just little Johnny Barnes.I'm just a little, small instrument in the hand of God be used any way he feels fit. What I do every day,2:00 in the morning I'm getting my break fast. You're still sleeping[he tells the interviewer],I guess.
From 20 to four until ten I stand on the corner and just greet people, let them know that life is sweet and beautiful. No matter what happens in life,it's always sweet to be alive.
No matter what the weather is like,he is there from Monday to Friday, spreading love.On the rare occasion he is not there, people call the radio station to see if he is OK.
He was 88 when the film was posted in 2012.Every day he was spreading love, straight  from his generous heart.
So well known and beloved is Barnes that the city of Hamilton built up a statue in his honour. The figure wears the same full beard and straw hat that are Barnes's trademarks. So  even when the day comes for the real Johnny Barnes to pass from this life, his smile and his memory will still be at that corner, spreading love to every passer-by.

5.A big focus of the criticism of computer games has concerned the content of the games being played.When the story of the games is analyzed they can be seen to fall into some styles.The two styles most popular with the children I interviewed were‘Platformers'and‘Beat-them-ups.'Platform games such as Sonic and Super Mario involve leaping from platform to platform,avoiding obstacles,moving on through the levels,and progressing through the different stages of the game.Beat-them-ups are the games which have caused concern over their violent content.These games involve fights between animated (動(dòng)畫的) characters.In many ways this violence can be compared to violence within children's cartoons where a character is hit over the head or falls off a cliff but walks away unscathed.
Argument has occurred in part because of the intensity of the game play,which is said to spill over into children's everyday lives.There are worries that children are becoming more violent and aggressive after longtime exposure to these games.Playing computer games involves feelings of intense frustration and anger which often expresses itself in aggressive‘yells'at the screen.It is not only the‘Beat-them-up'games which produce this aggression; platform games are just as frustrating when the characters lose all their‘lives'and‘die'just before the end of the level is reached.Computer gaming relies upon intense concentration on the moving images on the screen and demands great hand-to-eye coordination (協(xié)調(diào)).When the player loses and the words‘Game over'appear on the screen,there is annoyance and frustration at being beaten by the computer and at having made an error.This anger and aggression could perhaps be compared to the aggression felt when playing football and you take your eye off the ball and enable the opposition to score.The annoyance experienced when defeated at a computer game is what makes gaming‘a(chǎn)ddictive':the player is determined not to make the same mistake again and to have‘one last go'in the hope of doing better next time.
Some of the concern over the violence of computer games has been about children who are unable to tell the difference between fiction and reality and who act out the violent moves of the games in fight on the playground.The problem with video games is that they involve children more than television or films and this means there are more implications for their social behavior.Playing these games can lead to anti-social behavior,make children aggressive and affect their emotional stability.

74.The best title for the passage isC.
A.How to control anger while playing computer games
B.There is no difference between‘Platformers'and‘Beat-Them-Ups'
C.How does playing computer games affect the level of violence in children
D.How to make children spend less time on computer games
75.The word"unscathed"in Paragraph 1probably meansA.
A.unharmed
B.unbeaten
C.unsettled
D.unhappy
76.According to Paragraph 2,how does violence relate to playing computer games?B
A.Beat-Them-Ups are more popular with children therefore more likely to produce violent behavior.
B.When losing computer games children tend to experience frustration and anger.
C.People who have good hand-eye-coordination tend to be more violent than others.
D.The violent content in the games gets children addicted to the games.
77.According to the author,why do video games lead to violence more than TV or movies?D
A.Because children cannot tell fiction from reality.
B.Because children like to act out the scenes in the games on the playground.
C.Because computer games can produce more anti-social behavior.
D.Because computer games involve children more than TV or films.

4.In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition.Some value it highly,believing that it is responsible for social-progress and prosperity.Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.
I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills.For them,playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs.In their single-minded pursuit of success,the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.
However,while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed,others take an opposite attitude.In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players,they strongly blame competition.Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society.Teaching these young people,I often observe in them a desire to fail.They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success.By not trying,they always have an excuse:"I may have lost,but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try."What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost,that would mean a lot.Such a loss would be a measure of their worth.Clearly,this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves.Both are based on the mistake belief that-one's self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others.Both are afraid of not being valued.Only as this basic and  often trouble some fear begins to dissolve (緩解) can we discover a new meaning in competition.

32.What does this text mainly talk about?C
A.Competition helps to set up self-respect.
B.Competition is harmful to personal quality development.
C.People hold different opinions about competition.
D.Failures are necessary experience in competition.
33.Some people favor competition because they think itB.
A.builds up a sense of pride
B.pushes society forward
C.improves social abilities
 D.develops people's relationship
34.The underlined phrase"the most vocal"in Paragraph 3refers to those whoA
A.a(chǎn)re strongly against competition
B.highly value competition
C.try their best to win
D.mostly rely on others for success
35.Which viewpoint does the author agree to?C
A.Self-worth relies on winning.
B.Competition leads to unfriendly relationship.
C.Fear of failure should be removed in competition.
D.Winning should be a life-and-death matter.

3.Until recently,scientists had mapped only about 20 percent of the sea floor.But our knowledge of the deep seas is changing because of information from satellites.Scientists have produced a new map that provides a detailed picture of the oceans.The map is expected to help oceanographers (海洋學(xué)家),industry and governments.
The new map is twice as detailed as the map made 20 years ago.David Sandwell is a geophysics professor at the University of California.He and other scientists worked on the mapping project.He says they turned to space to look deeper into the ocean.
The scientists collected and studied information from two satellites.Some of the data came from the European Space Agency's Cryo-2 satellite.It was placed in Earth's orbit to watch sea ice.The other satellite is the American space agency's Jason-1.It is studying the surface of the oceans.Scientists combined the satellite data with images gathered by sonar (聲波定位儀) equipment on ships.Sonar works by sending sound waves through the water.When the sound waves hit an object,its presence is confirmed.
The new map shows the sea floor as it has never been seen before.It shows thousands of underwater mountains and places where continents pulled apart.It shows where earthquakes were active many years ago.They all are buried deep underneath the ocean floor.
David Sandwell says the map is a powerful tool for fisheries, those interested in protecting the environment and for oil exploration.
"The petrol exploration industry is interested in how to reconnect the continents,bring them back together tectonically so you can map the basins on one continental edge-say,Africa-and use that to establish where the similar basin would be on the other continental edge in South America."
If scientists know that information,they may be able to find oil fields.The new data also will help scientists improve their estimates of ocean depths.This information can help ships travel safely and improve military operations and scientific projects worldwide.
Mr.Sandwell thinks scientists will make many more discoveries as they examine the new map and the information it provides.

32.Which one is not mentioned about the benefits brought by the new map?C
A.Fisheries.
B.Scientific projects.
C.Ship manufacture.
D.Oil exploration.
33.What can we know about the new map?B
A.It shows where earthquakes will happen.
B.It will be helpful to industry and governments.
C.It is three times as detailed as the old one years ago.
D.It shows the sea floor as it has ever been seen before.
34.The text is likely to appear inC.
A.a(chǎn) newspaper
B.a(chǎn)n advertisement
C.a(chǎn) science magazine
D.a(chǎn) finance report
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?D
A.The detailed picture of the oceans
B.Underwater mountains and places
C.More discoveries about the oceans
D.Scientists create new maps of ocean floor.
