Picture this situation. It is late afternoon and you are1. You have an important dinner engagement that evening so you2to take an hour nap. Instead of setting your alarm you ask a friend who is visiting to wake you in an hour. He 38.
Two hours later, your friend wakes you. You ask, “Why didn’t you wake me after one hour?” He3that he thought you asked him to wake you in two hours and that is what he said. You then have to run around and get ready4, muttering to yourself about how you5have set the alarm rather than asking your friend to wake you. Had you done that, you would not have been so6to get ready.
Your conclusion is correct. Your7of what happened looked at the system you used. Your friend’s8to wake you resulted from a miscommunication.9he didn’t hear you correctly or you misspoke.
10at the situation from the point of view of being personally responsible is always better than blaming yourself or another. So how do you best be “responsible” in this situation? The answer is11in systems thinking.
Dr. W. Edward Deming is the American statistician who is credited with12the quality practices to Japan.13his arrival in that country in 1950, the label “made in Japan” was synonymous with inferior(劣等的) quality. Now the same “made in Japan” label is synonymous(等同) with14quality.
So what did Dr. Deming teach the Japanese that made such a15to the quality of their products? The answer is quite simple, yet profound.16on years of statistical analysis, Deming was able to validate(證明) that17% of all failures are not because people don’t want to do a good job. The fact is that18people want to do a good job.
What, then, is the19if it’s not the people?
It’s the system. The system failed in 94% of the20, not the people.

Nick was not the kind of boy I had expected to spend my summer with. I was hoping tohave a1the summer before my busy senior year, but my mother asked me to do her a2. One of her colleagues needed a full-time3. “You planned to volunteer at the local hospital, why not volunteer to4Nick instead?” Then she told me that this six-year-old boy was not a5child.
Nick was a lovely little boy who suffered from many disorders. Normal day-care centres would not6him. As a baby, he had serious ear infections which left him with equilibrium (平衡) problems. Then I told her I was11for the job.
The day started at 7:00 a.m. Nick was my wake-up call! With so much energy and very little12, he was quite a mix.
In the park, when he saw all the other children play on the jungle gym and swings (秋千), the boy’s face13up — how he wished he belonged to the group of his age! You would think it would be14to get a child to go down a slide (滑梯). Believe me, it wasn’t! It took time, a lot of time. But with patience and support, Nick took one step up the slide each day. We worked together to face his15and gradually he got closer to taking the slide of his life.
Halfway through the summer, he16it to the top of the slide. With my arms17him tightly, we flew down the slide! I waited for hisreaction. After realizing that he was safe and sound, he gave me a big18and asked, “May I go down again, alone?” I had never been happier in my life when I saw this little child climb the ladder and enjoy what other children19for granted. This20child taught me that being a nurse means respect, kindness and patience.

The yearly Marathon in my town usually happened during a heat wave. My job was to follow behind the runners in an ambulance(救護(hù)車)1 any of them needed medical attention.
“We’re supposed to stay behind the 2 runner, so take it slowly,” I said to the driver, Doug, as the race started.
The front-runners started to 3 and then my eyes were drawn to the woman in blue silk running shorts and a loose white T-shirt.
We knew we were already watching our “l(fā)ast runner.” Her 4 were so crippled(殘疾的)that it seemed almost impossible for her to be able to walk, let alone run a marathon.
Doug and I watched in silence as she slowly moved forward. 5, she was the only runner left in sight. Tears streamed down my face when I watched with respect 6 she pushed forward with great determination through the last miles.
When the finish line came into sight, rubbish lay everywhere and the 7 crowds had long gone home. Yet, standing straight and ever so proud8 a lone man. He was 9 one end of a ribbon(緞帶)of crepe paper(皺紋紙)10 to a post. She slowly crossed through, leaving both ends of the paper fluttering behind her.
I do not know this woman’s name, but that day she became part of my 11 – a part I often depend on. For her, it wasn’t about 12 the other runners or winning a prize, but about 13 what she had set out to do, no matter 14. When I think things are too difficult or I get those “I-just-can’t-do-it,” I think of the last runner. Then I realize how 15 the task before me really is.
