Ways to make a great first impression

You’ve heard it a million times already, but it really does take but a few seconds to make that all-important first impression (印象). Here are some easy ways for you to impress your classmates or teachers.

Before you shake hands with somebody, make sure that your hands are clean. The handshake should not be too strong or weak. Most people use their right hands, unless they have a reason to use the left. 2.

● Be on time

When meeting someone for the first time, arriving on time is as important as breathing. You may have an excuse, but that will leave the person who hardly knows you with a bad impression. 3. It’s better to be hanging around the place than be stuck in traffic.

● Introduce yourself and ask for names

Make sure you properly introduce yourself. Ask for their name in a polite way. 4. This will increase the chances of their remembering your name in the future. Always remember to stand up when greeting someone and be sure to introduce them to anyone you’re with.

● Make good conversation

To get the most out of your discussion, try to find something common between the two of you. 5. A person will feel more comfortable with someone they can relate to (產(chǎn)生共鳴).

“Languages are important,” “I know they’re hard but don’t give up,” “They’ll help you in life”.

I was told these words of encouragement over and over again, I would always roll my eyes, ignore them and continue to stress over the past and future tense and any numbers over 20.

I have studied languages from a young age. I began learning Greek aged 10. when my family and I moved there for two years. At first it was difficult and I had no idea whether I would be able to learn the language and use it productively, but eventually it started to make sense.

Slowly, very slowly, I started to get an immense (巨大的) sense of pride from using words and phrases I had learnt, overhearing (偷聽) conversations and (almost) understanding everything that was said.

Eight years later I started university back in England, where I met one of my best friends. Guess how we became best friends? She spoke Greek as a second language, I spoke Greek as a second language, that was our conversation starter. We went for coffee and from that moment we were inseparable. I was always told I would meet people through languages and it would open up doors for me, and that was one of the first moments where I believed it. Sometimes it comes down to something small like that, to make you realise what you’re doing is 100 percent worth it.

I was encouraged by my family to continue on the language path since I started learning at the age of 10, so I took up German and it was really challenging. There were a lot of times I thought I was going to give up, but I am so glad I didn’t; when I was 18, I didn’t get into the university I wanted, or get to study the course I wanted, I had no idea what I was going to do. I changed my plan and applied to go to the University of Manchester instead, to study Spanish. I had never studied Spanish before; they saw that I had studied Greek and German and offered me a place! Now I am in Spain for a year having an amazing time and enjoying the sunshine, working as an English language assistant in a lovely little primary school.

It was a wonderful chain of events; if I had ignored everybody who encouraged me to study languages, gave up when it was hard and didn’t practice, I would not be doing what I am doing right now, and ray life would be totally different. I’m glad I listened.

My advice: it’s true, languages arc important, immerse (使沉浸于) yourself in them, work hard and enjoy the benefits (because there are a lot!).

A cellphone is one of the few things that we hold close to our faces all the time, and yet it could possibly explode - this is what made the recent Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 smart-phone accidents so shocking.

According to technology news website The Verge, flawed（有瑕疵的）phone batteries might be to blame.

Even if you are not a science student, you probably know that it is common sense that the anode (the negative（負的）end of the battery) and the cathode (the positive end) should never touch. If they do, the battery will short-circuit（短路）, causing a powerful electrical reaction that can destroy the battery and cause a fire.

This is why all lithium-ion（鋰離子）batteries - the kind that can be found in many of our devices like tablets and cameras - have a separator layer inside to stop the two ends from touching one another.

But somehow, the separators in some of the Samsung phones broke, causing explosions.

Overcharging is another problem that can make batteries heat up quickly. Fortunately, most batteries are designed to be able to automatically stop charging once they are fully charged. But again, this somehow failed to happen in some of the Samsung phones.

The two “somehows” may sound random（隨機的）and hard to explain. But they actually both come from the fact that phone producers have been pushing the limits of batteries to meet customers’ demand for a longer battery life.

According to Lynden Archer, a materials scientist at Cornell University, US, we have already achieved 90 percent of the battery life possible from a lithium-ion battery. Customers’ demand that their devices get thinner has also given producers little choice but to try to put more power into thinner batteries.

“The more energy you put into a box, the more dangerous it’s going to be,” Billy Wu, a lecturer at Imperial College London, told The Guardian.

A thinner battery also means producers have to use thinner material for separators, and thinner material has more chance of breaking.
