Christmas can easily become an expensive time of a year. From gifts to decorating, the money spent on the celebration adds up quickly. But there's no reason to completely break the bank. 1.

Make a budget (預(yù)算). Set the amount you're willing to spend for the holiday, including gift giving, decorating and travel. 2. And if you can keep to your budget, you'll lead an easy life in the following weeks and months.

Start shopping for Christmas decorations early. Stores have sales for decorations between Halloween and Thanksgiving. 3. Better yet, go shopping for next year's decorations the day after Christmas. You can buy many things at very low prices right after Christmas.

Shop for gifts all year round. Whenever you're out shopping, keep an eye out for great Christmas presents. 4. Shopping early can prevent you from spending more money than you can afford. And if you spend little here and there throughout the year, Christmas will have a much smaller influence on your wallet in December.

Scale down (縮減) your gift giving. Sometimes you just can't afford to get something for everyone. Remove the people from your list whom you rarely speak with. 5. The people you do choose to buy for don't need something expensive. Keep in mind that it's the thought that is more important.

A. Send them simple cards instead.

B. This budget is perfect for many people.

C. Once you have a budget set, keep to it.

In a great many cities, hundreds of people ride bikes to work every day. In New York, some bike riders have even formed a group called Bike for a Better City. They declare that if more people rode bikes to work, there would be fewer automobiles in the downtown part of the city and so less dirty air from car engines.

For several years, this group had been trying to get the city government to help bike riders. For example, they want the city to draw special lanes(車道) for bikes on some of the main streets, because when bike riders must use the same lanes as cars there are accidents. Bike for a Better City feels that if there were special lanes, more people would use bikes.

But no bike lanes have been drawn. Not everyone thinks it is a good idea—they say it will slow traffic. Some store owners on the main streets don't like the idea—they say that if there is less traffic, they will have less business.

The first time I went for a walk around my father-in-law’s neighbourhood in America was Garbage Day,and I was shocked to see what people were throwing out.

It was back in 1981,and I saw many people gather in someone’s front yard.As I went nearer to see what was happening,I got my first introduction to yard sales. For the few dollars I had in my wallet,I was able to buy a seven-inch black-and-white portable TV.I also bought a flashlight.

The following weekend,at another yard sale,I saw a 14-inch colour TV being sold for almost nothing.I felt I could not miss the offer and bought it.Now I had two sets and couldn’t wait to see what else I could afford the next weekend.

Spring ended, and by then I had accumulated almost every type of electronic equipment I had always wished to have back home.

Then this new idea came to mind.I had heard about a man who travelled back home every few months. He drove a truck filled with boxes of new and used stuff that people were sending to relatives. So I told my father that I would send as many types of items as I could so that he could start his resale business.

Every few months I would gather several boxes of American “junk” televisions, toasters, fans, hair dryers, etc.and sent them home.As word got out about my father’s “trash” market, people all came to buy these things.

Three years later, when I visited my family for the first time since leaving home,I learned that many of the families in our neighborhood had a piece of “trash”.It proved that I had the responsibility to keep people back home in Guatemala up to date with the latest technology you no longer need.

Do you find yourself reaching for just one more cup of coffee to get through the day? Are you tired of being tired ? Instead of relying on things like coffee or sugar for energy, get happy by eating more foods that give you energy through nourishment. Here are four foods that can help improve your energy levels.

Hemp Seed

A complete protein, rich in fiber and omega-3s, hemp is a great low-glycemic (低胰島素) addition to any diet. The glycemic index (GI) is a measurement of how fast the carbohydrates in food are broken down into glucose (葡萄糖) and how much it will affect your blood sugar. Fiber, fat and protein all lower the GI of a food, which is why hemp seeds (along with nuts, seeds, whole grains and legumes)are low-glycemic. Look for hemp seed oil for salad dressing, and hemp seeds to be added into salads.

Soaked Almonds

Raw almonds are nutrient dense, and soaking them releases(釋放) higher nutrition potential. Soaking increases vitamin levels and removes the enzyme (酶) inhibitors that slow down digestion. I soak my almonds in water overnight (at least eight hours) and then dry them.

Quinoa

It is 20-percent protein, making it a balanced source of carbohydrates. Even though you feel like you're too busy to make home-made meals, quinoa is a fast food that cooks in less than 15 minutes.

Green Tea

Caffeine from green tea feels steadier and less sharp than the spike and crash with caffeine from coffee. This is likely because green tea contains L-theanine, a kind of acid found in tea that helps promote relaxation.

1.The writer wrote the passage in order to______.

A. introduce four foods making people energetic

B. find reasons why people need some coffee

C. reach for something to get through the day

D. tell people way of keeping fit

2.Why did the almonds get soaked?

A. It helped increase the enzyme. B. It helped unlock the nutrition.

C. It helped make digestion slow. D. It helped lock nutrient dense.

3.From the fourth paragraph we can know quinoa_______.

A. is rich in protein B. includes much fiber

C. can be served quickly D. has less sharp flavor
