Many trees and shrubs change color in fall. For years, scientists have worked hard to understand the changes that happen to them. They find that three factors 【1】 fall's colorful farewell — leaf pigments (色素), length of night, and weather. The timing of the color change is mainly regulated by the increasing length of night. None of the other 【2】influences, such as temperature, rainfall, food supply, are as unchanging as the 【3】increasing length of night during fall. As days grow shorter, and nights grow longer and cooler, biochemical 【4】 in leaves begin to paint the landscape with an explosion of colors. And Nature puts on one of its most splendid 【5】 of beauty.
The timing of the color change【6】 by species. Some species in southern forests can become vividly colorful in late summer while all other species are still vigorously green. Oaks put on their colors long after other species have already shed their leaves. These differences in timing among species seem to be genetically 【7】, for a particular species, whether on a high mountain or in warmer lowlands, will change color at the same time.
However, some species are evergreen. Pines, for example, are green all the year round because they have toughened up. They have developed over the years a needle-like or scale-like foliage (綠葉植物), which is【8】 with a heavy wax coating. And the liquid inside their cells contains cold-resistant elements. So the leaves of evergreens can safely withstand (經(jīng)受住) all but the most 【9】winter conditions, such as those in the Arctic.

Last Saturday I went to the Great Wall with some of my friends. In our way up,we saw many volunteers working in the sun. They helped the elders with their bags, took photo for some tourists and answered people's questions.Because they were very tired, they didn't stop to have a rest.Just at the moment,we saw a little boy standing alone, cried. We went over and asked what is the matter. From his answer we knew he couldn't find her mother. We told him not to worry and then we tried to get in the touch with his mother with the phone number he had given us. Twenty minutes late, his mother turned up,and thanked us again and again. That day we enjoyed the beauty of the Great Wall, and felt the warm of the society. If everyone can reach out helping to others, the world will be more harmonious.

You don’t have to spend money or even leave your desk to protect the environment. Here’s how to do your bit.
● Buy nothing
“Stop shopping—start living’’ is the slogan (口號(hào)) of the Buy Nothing Day ( BND) movement. Every 24th or 25th November, activists take a 24-hour retail (零售) break and… stop shopping!
BND was founded in 1992 by Canadian artist Ted Dave and it has been a great success ever since. People stop shopping on the day, expressing their concern about the environmental problem. So if you are used to shopping every day, BND gives you a chance to have a break! You might change your habit not just for one day, but for life!
● Stop eating prawns
You’ve probably got prawns ready for a quick and easy meal. But how are they produced? Well, most prawns come from Asia and Latin America, where they are fished or farmed.
Unfortunately, prawn fishing causes harm to marine (海洋的) life because huge nets are pulled along the sea bottom. 10 kilos of dead fish are thrown away for every kilo of prawns caught. Prawn farming is no better—a lot of forests are destroyed to make room for the farms. So think again about the prawns on your plate!
● Save the rainforest
Now only 2 million square miles of rainforests are left, and another 1% is being destroyed every year. The trees are being cut down for their wood, and the remaining rainforests could have been used by 2050. Over half of the world’s plant and animal species are found in rainforests. It is believed that extinctions (滅絕) take place every day due to cutting down trees.
Why not go to www. worldlandtrust. org? Donate the price of a cinema ticket for a piece of rainforest. It will be saved with your simple click of the mouse. If we don’t act,in 30 years from now the rainforests will have been destroyed.
【1】What do people do on BND? (不多于四個(gè)單詞)
【2】Why is prawn farming bad for the environment? (不多于十個(gè)單詞)
【3】How long will the remaining rainforests be used? (不多于三個(gè)單詞)
【4】What does the passage mainly talk about? (不多于八個(gè)單詞)

【題目】What Does the Length of Your Fingers Say About You?
Are you the peace-loving type or the ambitious go-getter? Your finger length might be a clue. Take a look at your fingers. Would you believe me if I told you that the length of your fingers in relation to one another can predict your personality? I know that it sounds like one of those silly tests you see on Facebook, but I have to admit that it is exactly correct for me. Here’s how it works.
Look at your three middle fingers of your hand. Is your index finger longer than your ring finger? Is your ring finger longer than your index finger? Or are the two of the same length? Find the situation that best matches your hand and see if what follows is an accurate description of your personality.
Longer ring finger: The Sweet Talker
If your ring finger is longer than your index finger, research shows that you’re likely a charming type, and you can probably talk yourself out of any situation. Others often find this personality type irresistible and will go to great lengths to help you. You’re more likely to take risks, and you’re good at problem-solving. People in this category make great engineers, soldiers and crossword-puzzle solvers.
Longer index finger: The (Over) Confident One
If your index finger is longer than your ring finger, chances are that you are full of confidence— possibly even to the point of being over-confident and proud. You are not necessarily introverted (內(nèi)向的), but you do enjoy time to yourself, especially when you’re trying to complete a project. You are a dream pursuer who can make things happen, but you may be shy when it comes to taking the first step in a relationship. You are also probably happy with what you have, but you’re always wishing for more.
Index and ring finger are of the same length: The Peacemaker
If your index finger and ring finger are roughly of the same length, you are likely to avoid conflict at all costs and seek to keep the peace in your relationships. You are well-organized, faithful and sympathetic. But deep down under all of that caring and peace-loving, you also have a hot-tempered side that can appear unexpectedly when you’re pushed too far. You will try your hardest to avoid a fight.
How well do these descriptions match your personality? I was surprised at the accuracy in my case, but I’m not going to tell you which one it was!
【1】Which of the following hand could be an engineer’s hand?
A. B.
C. D.
【2】We can learn from the passage that the author .
A. is very charming and helpful
B. always tries hard to avoid a fight
C. often takes silly tests on Facebook
D. thinks the descriptions suit him well
【3】Where can you probably find the text?
A. A popular magazine. B. An official report.
C. A public advertisement. D. A biology textbook.

Donald Trump 【1】 his place as the United States’ 45th president after crossing the 270 electoral vote threshold(門檻) on November 9. The 70-year-old Republican will take over from Barack Obama, a two-term president to occupy the White House.
The rise of Trump, a celebrity businessman with no previous experience in the 【2】 or elected office, surprised nearly everyone in politics. Trump’s victory over Clinton will end eight years of Democratic 【3】 of the White House. He will govern with Congress fully under Republican control and lead a country deeply 【4】 by his campaign against Clinton. Given the numerous Republicans who never backed him, Trump will have to face divisions within his own party, too.
As he claimed victory, Trump urged Americans to “come together as one united people.” “I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president for all Americans,” he said in his victory speech. Striking a 【5】 tone, Trump continued that he would ask a few of those who had chosen not to support him for 【6】 and help so that “we can work together and unify our great country.”
